Protecting Precision Parts

Bearings are heavy for their size and built to tight tolerances. A dropped bearing can suffer damage to its races or seals that is not visible from the outside but causes early failure once fitted. Packaging has to cushion knocks, keep moisture and dust away and stop parts rubbing against one another.

At the same time, bearing packaging has a practical role in the stores. Engineers and stock controllers need to find the right part quickly, often among hundreds of similar-looking boxes. Clear labelling, consistent sizing and sturdy boxes that stack neatly make a real difference to how quickly an order is picked.

A branded box also signals quality to the customer. Distributors selling their own range, or engineering firms supplying parts to clients, find that a well-made printed carton reinforces confidence in the part inside.

Returns are another hidden cost. A bearing that arrives in a split or crushed box is often sent back by a careful customer, even when the part itself is fine. Spending a little more on the right packaging usually pays for itself in fewer returns and less handling.

Matching Box Styles to Bearing Types

Different bearings suit different box shapes and constructions.

If you are unsure which construction suits a particular bearing, send us its weight along with the dimensions. Weight tells us far more about the right board and closure than size alone, especially for compact but dense parts.

  • Small deep-groove ball bearings: compact square tuck end cartons, often in multiples per box.
  • Roller and needle bearings: slim square or rectangular cartons with a card insert to stop rolling.
  • Taper roller bearings: deeper square boxes that hold the cone and cup together.
  • Large bearings: corrugated cartons with die-cut inserts, sometimes with a hand hole for lifting.
  • Bearing kits and sets: divided boxes holding bearings, seals and circlips in separate compartments.

Board Strength for Heavy Small Parts

Weight is concentrated in a small space with bearings, so even a small box carries a surprising load. Lightweight retail board is not enough. Heavy folding boxboard suits small bearings, while medium and large bearings need E-flute or B-flute corrugated board, which resists crushing and protects corners.

Crash-lock bottoms are a sensible choice for heavier parts, because the base locks into place firmly when the box is opened up and will not give way under load. Tuck tops with slit-lock tabs stop the lid opening if the box is dropped.

The box itself can carry a reminder that the part is protected and should stay sealed until fitting.

Stacking strength matters in a warehouse. Bearing boxes are often stored in tall columns on racking, so the boxes at the bottom carry the weight of everything above. Choosing a board that resists compression keeps those columns straight and stops lower boxes collapsing over time.

If your parts are shipped by pallet, consider an outer shipping carton that holds a set number of individual boxes. It keeps small cartons together, speeds up goods-in for your customers and protects the printed boxes from scuffing.

Labelling Custom Bearing Boxes for the Stores

The most important part of a bearing box design is often the label panel. Give it a consistent position on every box size, usually on the end panel so it can be read when boxes sit on a shelf. Include space for: The same panel layout is used on our car light bulb boxes, where fitment codes replace bearing designations.

  • Part number in large, bold type
  • Bearing designation, bore, outside diameter and width
  • Seal or shield type and clearance class
  • Quantity per box
  • Batch or lot number area
  • Barcode or QR code for stock systems

Printing and Branding

Industrial packaging does not need to be plain. A strong brand colour across all four sides, with a white label panel, makes your range easy to spot in a store full of mixed suppliers. Many distributors use a colour band to separate product lines or sizes, so pickers can find the right group at a glance.

One or two colour printing on kraft corrugated suits a practical, rugged look and keeps costs efficient. Full-colour printing on white board or white-lined corrugated is available for brands that want photographs or diagrams of the bearing on the box.

Variable data printing can add part numbers directly to each box during printing, rather than applying separate labels. This works best when quantities per part are large enough to justify it; otherwise a printed blank panel with applied labels is simpler.

Keep typography plain and highly legible. Engineers reading part numbers under warehouse lighting, sometimes wearing gloves, need large, clear characters rather than decorative fonts. A simple sans-serif typeface in a dark colour on a white panel is hard to beat.

If you supply both your own brand and unbranded parts for resale, a neutral version of the box with the label panel but no logo can be printed alongside your branded range. Distributors posting single bearings direct to garages often pair the carton with automotive mailer boxes for parts.

Inserts and Internal Protection

A bearing sliding around inside a box can damage seals or dent the box from inside. Simple card inserts hold the bearing centrally. For sets, die-cut dividers keep each part separate. Foam inserts give the best protection for precision or high-value bearings and look smart when the box is opened.

Send us the outside diameter, bore and width of each bearing, and how many go into each box. We will design inserts and sizes that hold them firmly and stack well.

For very small bearings sold in quantity, consider a multi-pack box with a card tray holding several bearings in a row. It reduces the number of individual boxes to handle and makes counting stock quicker.

Send Weights Per Box, Not Just Dimensions

Bearing cartons are specified by load before anything else, so for each box size tell us the bearing's bore, outside diameter and width, how many go in the box, and the total weight once filled. A 65 mm box holding four steel bearings weighs far more than its size suggests, and that figure decides between heavy boxboard and corrugated, and whether a crash-lock base is needed. Fix the label panel position across every size at the same time, usually the end panel, and send a sample part number so the type size can be checked on the proof.

A custom quote comes back by email within one working day, with small cartons from £0.25 each depending on board and print, and minimums quoted per job so a distributor can cover a dozen sizes in one order. The free proof shows each size with its label panel and insert. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval and tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses is free, taking 2–3 working days. Boxes that arrive crushed or misprinted are reprinted or refunded when reported within 10 days. Filters and other larger parts in the same range can be quoted in roll-end boxes for automotive parts.

Bearing Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering bearing boxes.

Which board is strong enough for steel bearings?

Heavy boxboard suits small bearings, while medium and large sizes are best in E-flute or B-flute corrugated. We recommend a grade based on the weight per box.

Can engineers read the part number when boxes are stacked five high?

Yes, if the number sits on an end panel in large bold type, because the end faces outward on racking. We keep that panel in the same position on every size so a picker's eye goes to the same place each time. A white panel on a coloured box reads best under warehouse lighting.

Can you print part numbers directly on the box?

Variable data printing can add part numbers during production. For smaller quantities per part, a blank panel with applied labels is usually simpler.

How do I stop bearings rolling inside the box?

A card or foam insert holds the bearing centrally. For sets, dividers keep each part separate so races and seals never touch.

Can the box hold a bearing kit with seals?

Yes. A divided box with compartments for bearings, seals and circlips keeps kits complete and easy to check.

Do you supply VCI paper inside the box?

VCI paper wraps can be quoted alongside the boxes for parts that need corrosion protection in storage. Tell us the bearing size so the sheet is cut to wrap it once.

Can different sizes have colour bands?

Colour-coding by size or product line helps pickers find the right group of parts quickly in the stores. The band prints in the same pass as the rest of the box, so it adds no cost on a full-colour job.

Will a crash-lock base hold heavier bearings?

A crash-lock base locks firmly when the box is opened and is well suited to heavier parts. For a taper roller set above a kilo we pair it with B-flute board.

Can I include a barcode for our stock system?

Yes. Barcodes or QR codes can be printed on the label panel or added with your own labels. Send the code format and we check it scans on the proof.

Can you make boxes for many sizes at once?

One order can cover several box sizes, each with its own dieline, and the proof shows each one. Keeping the label panel and colour band identical across sizes makes the range look like one system.
