Custom Tear Strip Poly Mailers
Tear strip poly mailers are lightweight plastic mailing bags with a perforated strip that opens the bag cleanly by hand, often with a second adhesive strip so the same bag can carry a return. Why Online Fashion Brands Use Poly Mailers
Clothing is soft, light and hard to break, which makes a rigid box unnecessary for most orders. A poly mailer is the natural choice: it weighs very little, takes up almost no room in storage, keeps garments dry in the rain and costs less to post than a box. For brands sending large numbers of t-shirts, leggings, swimwear and accessories, it is the most practical option.
The tear strip adds two things. First, the customer can open the bag without scissors, pulling a perforated strip along one edge so the bag splits cleanly. Second, when a second adhesive strip is included, the customer can put a return back into the same bag and seal it. That means fewer customers hunting for a bag or box to send something back, and fewer returns arriving in odd packaging.
Poly mailers also suit busy packing benches. They need no folding, no tape and no void fill, so a packer can bag, seal and label an order in seconds. During sales and launches, when order numbers jump suddenly, that speed matters as much as the cost per bag. Full-colour film in a brand colour is on our branded poly mailers in full colour page.
How a Two-Strip Mailer Works
A returnable mailer has two adhesive strips under the flap. The first is used by your packing team to seal the outgoing order. The customer opens the bag using the tear strip, which runs across the bag below the first seal. If they need to return something, they peel the protective liner from the second strip and seal the bag again.
Because the tear strip removes the original seal, the bag is shorter after opening. We size returnable mailers with enough extra length to allow for this, so the garment still fits comfortably on its way back.
Printing short instructions near the strips, such as 'Tear here to open' and 'Use this strip for returns', helps customers understand the system without searching for help. The same perforated strip is used on boxes with our tear strip tape for boxes.
- Strip one: seals the outgoing order
- Tear line: opens the bag by hand
- Strip two: reseals the bag for a return
- Printed guide: shows customers how to use it

Film Thickness and Opacity
Poly mailers are made from flexible polythene film in different thicknesses. Thinner film is light and economical for t-shirts and small soft goods. Thicker film resists tearing and punctures, which suits heavier items, sharp-edged packaging or long courier routes.
Opacity matters for privacy and presentation. A grey or black inner layer stops anyone seeing what is inside, which customers appreciate for lingerie, swimwear and gifts. Co-extruded film, with a white or coloured outside and a black inside, gives the brightest print while staying fully opaque.
For very light items, such as socks or hair accessories, a smaller and thinner mailer saves money. For hoodies and jackets, choose a heavier film and a bag with a gusset so the garment does not stretch the seams.
Some brands also tuck a small printed returns card inside the bag, listing the returns address and steps, so the customer has everything in one place when a size does not fit. The films are shown side by side in our film finishes compared guide.
Sizing Custom Tear Strip Poly Mailers
Fold your garment the way your team will pack it, and if you use tissue or a branded card, include those. Measure the folded pack and add space for the bag to close comfortably, usually 30 to 50 mm on width and a little more on length. For returnable mailers, add extra length to allow for the tear strip.
Most fashion brands manage with three or four sizes: small for accessories and underwear, medium for tees and leggings, large for jumpers and dresses and extra large for coats and bundles. Matching mailer sizes to your best-selling products avoids half-empty bags.
Oversized bags are a hidden cost. Couriers charge by size band as well as weight, and a mailer that is much larger than the garment can push a parcel into a more expensive band. Fitting the bag to the product keeps postage predictable. Our measuring a folded garment for a bag covers tissue and seal allowances.
Printing and Branding
A printed mailer turns a plain parcel into a branded delivery. Bold logos and simple graphics work best on poly film, which is printed with flexographic inks in one or more colours. Full coverage designs, with the background colour printed edge to edge, make a strong impression on the doorstep.
Use the back of the mailer for a website, social handle or returns address, and the area near the tear strip for opening instructions. Some brands print a short thank-you line or a hashtag that customers share when they post their order online.
Keep in mind that couriers apply labels to the front, so leave a clear area where the shipping label can go without covering your logo.
Colour choice changes the feel of the parcel. Black and charcoal mailers look sleek for fashion and streetwear, pastels suit lingerie and children's ranges, and bright brand colours make a parcel instantly recognisable on a busy doorstep.
Spot colours give the most consistent results on film, so if your brand uses a specific shade, send us its reference and we will match it as closely as the film allows. Short runs can use plain bags with logo stickers for plain mailers until a printed run is justified.
Who Orders Tear Strip Mailers
Online clothing brands, from small independent labels to larger retailers, are the main buyers. Sportswear, swimwear, lingerie and children's clothing brands all use returnable mailers because their return rates are high. Marketplace sellers use them to look more professional than generic grey bags.
Subscription services for socks, underwear and beauty products use mailers because they are light and fit through many letterboxes, saving the customer a trip to collect a parcel.
Brands that sell both online and at events sometimes use the same printed mailers as carrier bags at a stall, which keeps packaging stock simple.
Gift retailers like them as well, since an opaque bag keeps a present hidden until it is handed over. Items already in a gift box travel better in our small cardboard boxes for boxed items.
Fold a Hoodie and a Tee and Measure Both
Tear strip mailers are sized by the folded garment, so fold your bulkiest item and your flattest one the way your packers do, with tissue if you use it, and measure each: length, width and thickness. Add 30 mm to the width and 50 mm to the length for the seal and the strip, and most brands end up with two sizes. Decide if the mailer needs a second adhesive strip for returns, because that adds length too. Choose the film, co-extruded for an opaque bag, and the thickness by the weight of the garment. Artwork is a logo and a colour, with a clear label zone on the front, sent as vector files, and the free proof shows the print and the strip positions. A custom quote comes by email within one working day, minimums are quoted per job, and mailers are made in 4–7 working days after approval with free tracked UK mainland delivery. Misprints or damage reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Unprinted stock for plain orders is on our economy poly mailers for plain orders page.

Tear Strip Poly Mailers Questions
What buyers ask before ordering tear strip poly mailers.
How does a tear strip poly mailer open?
The customer pulls a perforated strip along one edge, which splits the bag cleanly without scissors. The strip sits above the adhesive seal, so the bag opens without tearing into the garment. A short printed arrow shows where to pull.
Can the same mailer be used for returns?
Yes, if it has a second adhesive strip. The customer peels the liner and reseals the bag for the return.
Do returnable mailers need to be larger?
A little longer, because the tear strip removes some length. We size them to allow for this.
Can people see through poly mailers?
Not with co-extruded film, which has a black or grey inner layer that makes the bag fully opaque. Single-layer clear or white film can show shapes through it. Tell us if the contents must stay private and we specify the co-extruded film.
What film thickness should I choose?
Lighter film suits t-shirts and small soft goods. Heavier film suits hoodies, jackets and longer courier routes.
Can you print opening instructions on the bag?
Yes. Short instructions near each strip help customers open and reseal the bag correctly.
Where does the courier label go on a tear strip mailer?
Leave a clear or pale area on the front, roughly 100 x 150 mm, so the label does not cover your logo or the tear strip. We mark the label zone on the proof. Keep the strip on the opposite edge so the label is not cut.
Can hoodies and tees share one mailer design in two sizes?
Yes, several sizes can share one design, which keeps the branding consistent across orders. The artwork is scaled to each bag rather than stretched. Each size appears on the proof.
Will a large letter mailer fit through a letterbox?
A slim mailer sized for large letter post fits most letterboxes when packed with thin items such as a tee or a scarf. Check the packed thickness against the large letter limit. Bulkier garments go as a small parcel.
Will a poly mailer protect a garment in the rain?
Yes. Polythene film keeps garments dry on a wet doorstep, which is one of the main reasons fashion brands prefer it to paper envelopes.
What if the adhesive strip does not stick?
Photograph the strip and the bag and report it within 10 days of delivery, and we reprint or refund the affected mailers. Adhesive is tested on the press sample before the run. Strips stored in a cold warehouse can need a firmer press to bond.
