Why a Large Cube Is So Useful
A 20 inch cube is one of the most versatile boxes a business can stock. Among our large cardboard box sizes it is the one most firms keep on hand: big enough for bedding, cushions, lampshades, kitchenware and bulky soft goods, yet not so big that one person cannot carry it when it is full of lighter items. The equal sides make it easy to stack on pallets and shelves, because every box sits the same way whichever face is down.
Removals firms use it for duvets, toys and odd-shaped household items. Warehouses use it for overflow stock and returns. Online retailers use it for bulky orders that are light but large, such as cushions, foam products and plastic housewares. Because the size is so common, it is also easy for customers and staff to picture.
For businesses that ship bulky goods, the cube is also kind to courier pricing in a way that long thin boxes are not, because it packs neatly into a van with few wasted gaps. Always check your carrier rules for volumetric weight, as large light boxes can be charged by size rather than weight.
Inch and Millimetre Sizes Explained
The name comes from inches, but in the UK most specifications are in millimetres, which is why our guide to measuring a product works in mm throughout. 20 inches is 508 mm, so a true 20 x 20 x 20 box has internal dimensions of about 508 x 508 x 508 mm. Board thickness adds a few millimetres to the outside, which matters if you are planning pallet layouts or van loads.
If your products need a slightly different size, such as 500 mm or 520 mm, we can make that instead. A custom cube costs no more to produce than the standard size, and it means items fit without extra void fill.
If you plan to pallet the boxes, it helps to work back from the pallet. A standard UK pallet is 1200 x 1000 mm, and two 508 mm cubes side by side across the short edge leave a little overhang room. Telling us how you pallet lets us suggest a size that uses the space well.

Single Wall or Double Wall?
Board strength depends on what goes inside and how the boxes are handled, and the choice comes down to single wall or double wall corrugated board. Single wall board is light, economical and fine for soft goods, bedding and light housewares that will not be stacked too high. Double wall board is much stiffer and resists crushing when boxes are stacked several high in a warehouse or loaded tightly into a van.
As a rough guide, if a full box weighs more than about 15 kg, or will sit at the bottom of a tall stack, double wall is the safer choice. For removals, many firms keep both: single wall for linens and double wall for books, kitchenware and anything heavy.
Removals customers also reuse these boxes for loft storage, so a sturdier grade often earns goodwill long after the move is done.
- Single wall B-flute for light, bulky items
- Single wall C-flute for general use and moderate stacking
- Double wall BC-flute for heavy contents and tall stacks
- Hand holes on two sides for easier lifting
Printing on Custom 20 x 20 x 20 Cardboard Boxes
Large boxes give you a large canvas, far more than a small cardboard carton can offer. A removals company might print its logo and phone number on all four sides, so every box in a client's new home carries the name. A retailer might print a simple logo and a this way up arrow. Warehouses often print a white panel where contents and locations can be written by hand.
Direct print in one or two colours onto brown kraft is the most common and economical choice for these boxes. It is clear, quick and hard-wearing. Full colour is possible for retail use, but most buyers keep the design simple because the box is a workhorse rather than a display piece.
For removals firms, consistent boxes also look professional on moving day. A van full of matching printed cubes tells the client they hired a proper firm, and the boxes stacked in their new hallway keep your name in front of them, and their neighbours, for days afterwards.
Packing and Handling Tips
A big box filled with heavy items is a back injury waiting to happen. Keep heavy contents for smaller boxes such as our 6 x 6 x 6 inch cartons and use the 20 inch cube for lighter, bulkier items. If you must pack something heavy, put it at the bottom and fill the rest with lighter items so the weight stays low.
Seal the base with tape along the centre seam and across both edges, sometimes called an H-tape pattern, for the best strength. Hand holes make lifting easier and safer, but they weaken the side slightly, so avoid them on boxes that will carry very heavy loads at the bottom of a stack.
Write or print contents on at least two sides, and on the top if boxes will be stacked. It saves a lot of opening and closing when you are looking for one item.
Storage and Flat Delivery
Large boxes take up a lot of room when made up, so they are supplied flat and folded only when needed. A pallet of flat boxes fits in a corner of a warehouse or a garage. Removals firms often keep a stock in their vans and assemble boxes on site as each room is packed.
If you need boxes delivered to several sites, let us know when you ask for your quote. Free tracked delivery covers UK mainland addresses, usually within 2 to 3 working days.
Store flat boxes somewhere dry. Corrugated board absorbs damp from cold concrete floors, which weakens it, so keep pallets off the ground or on a raised shelf, especially in an unheated unit.
Check the Van Door and the Pallet Before You Settle on 508 mm
A 20 inch cube is close to the limit of what one person can carry through a doorway while full, so before you confirm the size, measure the narrowest door, stair turn or van opening the boxes will pass through. If the route is tight, the 508 x 508 x 300 mm low cube may suit better and still stack neatly on a pallet. Decide on hand holes at the same time: they make carrying easier but should be left out if the box will carry more than about 15 kg or sit at the bottom of a stack.
With the size settled, choose the board grade and the print. One colour on kraft suits a name and phone number on all four sides. Send those details and the quantity and a custom quote comes back by email within one working day, followed by a free design proof. Production runs 4 to 7 working days after you approve it, and the flat bundles or pallet travel on free tracked UK mainland delivery in 2 to 3 working days. If you also need cartons with built-in carry handles for lighter loads, ask for both in the same quote.

20 x 20 x 20 Cardboard Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering 20 x 20 x 20 cardboard boxes.
What is 20 x 20 x 20 inches in millimetres?
20 inches is 508 mm, so the internal size is about 508 x 508 x 508 mm. The outside is a few millimetres larger because of the board thickness.
Should I choose single or double wall board?
Single wall suits light, bulky contents and moderate stacking. Double wall is better for heavy contents or boxes at the bottom of tall stacks. If a full box weighs more than about 15 kg, double wall is usually the safer choice.
Can you print my logo and phone number on the boxes?
Yes, one or two colour print on kraft is the most popular choice for large boxes. Many removals firms print their details on all four sides.
Can I order a slightly different cube size?
Yes, we can make 500 mm, 520 mm or any size you need. A custom cube costs much the same to produce as the standard 20 inch size.
Do hand holes weaken the box?
Hand holes slightly reduce side strength, which is fine for most uses. For very heavy contents at the bottom of a stack, we suggest leaving them out or choosing double wall.
Do 500 flat 20 inch cubes arrive on a pallet or in bundles?
Smaller runs are bundled and strapped flat; larger runs travel on a pallet so the blanks are not bent in transit. Either way delivery to UK mainland addresses is free and tracked and usually takes 2 to 3 working days. Tell us if your premises have no forklift or tail-lift access so the drop can be planned.
Can I add a write-on panel for contents?
Yes, a printed white panel or a set of lines makes it easy to write contents and locations by hand. It is popular with warehouses and removals firms.
What is the best way to tape the base?
Tape along the centre seam and across both edges in an H pattern. This gives far more strength than a single strip down the middle.
Can I order plain unprinted boxes?
Yes, plain boxes are available in the same sizes and grades. They are useful when you simply need reliable large cubes in stock.
Can a removals firm get boxes before a large house move?
Yes, if you order a little ahead. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after proof approval, then free tracked delivery usually takes 2 to 3 working days. Plain boxes need no artwork, which shortens the proof step.
One corner of the bundle looks crushed on arrival. Are the boxes still usable?
Check the blanks nearest the strapping first, because a crushed corner on a flat blank becomes a weak point once the cube is folded and loaded. Photograph anything affected and report it within 10 days; we reprint or refund the damaged boxes. The rest of the bundle is normally fine to use.
