Custom Small Cardboard Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom small cardboard boxes give little products a proper shipping case instead of a padded bag that crushes in the sorting machine. We cut them from fine-flute corrugated board to the size of your item and print your logo inside, outside or both.

Why Small Items Need a Real Box

A pair of earrings, a replacement drone propeller or a sample sachet weighs almost nothing, and that is exactly the problem. Light parcels get thrown, stacked under heavier ones and pushed through letterbox slots. A soft mailer bag offers no resistance, so the contents bend or the packet splits at the seam. A small corrugated box holds its shape under load and keeps the product in one place until somebody opens it on purpose.

There is a presentation gain too. When a small online shop sends a neat printed box, the customer reads it as a finished product rather than something posted from a kitchen table. That impression matters most for sellers whose items are small but not cheap: silver jewellery, watch straps, specialist electronic components and refill cartridges.

Getting the Size Right for Little Products

With small boxes a few millimetres change everything. Too much air and the item rattles; too little and the lid bulges. Measure the product in its inner pouch, card or tissue, not bare, and add around 3 mm on each internal dimension for a snug fit. If you plan to add a printed insert or a thank-you card, measure that as well and allow for its thickness.

Postage is the other constraint. Many small sellers want a box that still qualifies as a large letter, which means a shallow depth and a footprint that clears the slot. If that matters to you, tell us the postage format when you ask for a custom quote and we will check the external size, not just the inside, before the proof goes out.

  • Measure the packed item, then add roughly 3 mm per side
  • Quote internal sizes; we calculate the board allowance
  • State the postage format if the box must fit a letterbox

Board Choices for Small Corrugated Boxes

Most small boxes are made in E-flute, a thin corrugated board around 1.5 mm thick. It folds crisply at small sizes, prints cleanly and still resists crushing far better than folding carton. For the tiniest boxes, such as ring or SIM card cases, a stiff folding board can work, but anything travelling through the post on its own is better in corrugated.

You can pick a white outer liner for bright full-colour artwork or a brown kraft liner for a plain, practical look. Kraft liners take one or two spot colours well and hide scuffs picked up in transit. If the box is a retail pack that also travels inside a bigger outer carton, a white liner with a gloss or matt varnish gives the sharpest shelf finish.

Board strength is quoted by flute and liner weight rather than by a single number, and the right pairing depends on what is inside. A box carrying a single ring needs very little crush resistance but benefits from a smooth liner for print. A box carrying a metal bracket or a set of steel screws needs a heavier liner so the corners do not split when the parcel is dropped. If you are unsure, send a sample product or its weight and we will suggest the lightest board that still does the job.

Styles That Work at Small Sizes

Not every box style scales down neatly. A roll-end tuck-front mailer is the most popular choice because it locks closed without tape and opens like a little gift box. Crash-lock bases are less common at this size, since the product weight rarely needs them. Simple tuck-end cartons suit items that go into a larger shipper, while sleeve-and-tray designs suit jewellery and accessories that are opened in front of the customer.

If you sell several products of slightly different sizes, it is often smarter to choose two box sizes that cover the whole range than to order one per item. We can help you group products so you keep stock simple without filling boxes with void fill.

Printing Your Logo on a Small Surface

Small panels reward restraint. A single centred logo on the lid, your web address on one side and perhaps a pattern inside the box usually looks better than trying to fit a full brand story onto a lid the size of a coaster. Inside print is a quiet way to surprise customers: the outside stays neat for the courier, while the opening moment shows colour.

Keep text at 6 pt or larger and avoid fine hairlines under 0.25 pt, since corrugated board has a slight texture that softens tiny details. Every order includes a free design proof before printing, so you can see exactly where your logo falls across the folds.

Packing Small Orders Faster at the Bench

Small items take longer to pack than people expect, because every step is fiddly. A box that arrives flat, folds in a single movement and locks without tape saves real minutes over a day of orders. Roll-end mailers are the quickest of all: fold the sides up, drop the product in, tuck the lid and add the label. Tray-and-sleeve designs look smarter but add a second component, so they suit higher-value pieces where presentation justifies the extra handling.

Think about where the shipping label goes before you finalise artwork. On a small lid there may only be one flat panel large enough for a courier label, and it is a shame to cover your logo with a barcode. We can leave a plain panel on the base or back for labels, or print a small address area directly onto the box so nothing is hidden.

Finally, plan for returns. If customers often send items back, a tear strip or a second tuck flap lets them reuse the same box, which keeps returned stock protected on the way to you. Benches that pack dozens a day move to self seal mailing boxes for faster packing with a peel strip.

Measure the Item in Its Pouch and Add 3 mm

Small boxes are cut close, so measure the item as it will travel, inside its pouch, tissue or bubble wrap, and add about 3 mm to the length, width and depth. If the box must post as a large letter, keep the depth shallow and tell us, because the footprint then has to stay inside the letter band. Decide on kraft for scuff-hiding or white for pale brand colours, and whether print goes on the lid only, which keeps the cost down, or inside as well. Two or three sizes usually cover a small seller's range, and a small card insert with a slot holds rings and earrings still without loose fill.

Send the internal size, board colour, print sides and a rough quantity, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day, with low minimums for sellers who do not want to fill a stockroom. The free proof shows the box flat with the print. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval, boxes arrive flat in cartons by tracked courier to UK mainland addresses, and crushed or misprinted boxes reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded.

Small Cardboard Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering small cardboard boxes.

How small can you make a corrugated box?

We regularly produce corrugated boxes with internal sides around 50 mm. Below that, the folds become stiff and a folding board carton usually gives a cleaner result. Tell us the item size and we will recommend the better option.

Will a small cardboard box fit through a letterbox?

It can, if the depth is kept shallow and the footprint stays within the large letter limits. Give us the postage format you plan to use and we check the external size against it before sending your proof.

Should I choose kraft or white board for jewellery?

White board shows full-colour artwork and pale brand colours accurately, which suits fashion jewellery. Kraft gives a natural, handmade feel and hides scuffs. Both are available in the same styles and sizes.

Can you print inside such a small box?

Yes. Inside print works well on small mailers because the panels are close to the eye when the lid opens. A simple pattern or a short thank-you line is often more effective than a full logo inside.

Do I need an insert to stop the item moving?

If the box is cut close to the product size, many items sit still without one. Rings, earrings and loose parts usually benefit from a die-cut card cradle that holds them in place, and we can add one to your custom quote.

What is the cheapest way to brand small boxes?

One spot colour on kraft board, printed on the lid only, keeps costs down while still showing your logo clearly. Prices start from £0.25 a box and depend on size, board and print coverage.

How do I measure for a small box?

Measure the item in whatever wrap or pouch it will travel in, then add about 3 mm to the length, width and depth. Send those internal sizes and we allow for the board thickness ourselves.

Can a jewellery seller order a ring box size and an earring box size together?

Yes. Many small sellers order two or three sizes in one job to cover their range, and each size is quoted and proofed on its own so the print lines up on every box.

Are small boxes strong enough to post without an outer carton?

E-flute corrugated boxes are designed to travel on their own through the postal network. For fragile items such as glass vials, we suggest adding an insert rather than moving to a thicker board.

What happens if my boxes arrive crushed?

Report any damage or misprint within 10 days of delivery with a photo, and we reprint or refund the affected boxes. Boxes are shipped flat in sturdy cartons, which keeps damage rare.

How soon can small printed boxes be ready?

After you approve the free design proof, production takes 4–7 working days. Free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses then takes 2–3 working days.
