Why the Six-Inch Cube Is So Popular
Some box sizes earn a following because they fit so many products. The six-inch cube is one of them. A standard mug with a handle fits inside with room for wrapping. So does a large candle jar, a small succulent in its pot, a jar of honey with a card, or a couple of soaps with a scrubbing brush. Online sellers who stock mixed products often find this one box covers a surprising share of their orders. If your products are smaller than a mug, our range of small cardboard boxes starts well under this size.
A cube also packs well. Six cubes sit neatly in a row on a shelf, they stack evenly without leaning and they fit comfortably into delivery vans and post bags. Couriers handle cubes more gently than long, awkward parcels, and customers find them easy to carry and open. For a small business keeping only a few box sizes, the six-inch cube is often the first one chosen.
There is also a pricing logic. Carriers usually charge by weight and by size band, and a six-inch cube sits comfortably in the small parcel bracket for most services. Moving up to a larger box just to fit a few extra centimetres of padding can push a parcel into the next price band, which adds up quickly over a month of orders.
Inches, Millimetres and What Fits Inside
Six inches is 152 mm. When a box is described as 6 x 6 x 6 inches, that is usually the internal size, but corrugated board has thickness, so the outside is a few millimetres larger. If the outside size matters, for example to fit a shelf or a postal size band, tell us and we will check both dimensions.
Before ordering, put your product into a cardboard box of roughly this size, or mark out 152 mm on a ruler, and check the fit with any wrapping or padding. A mug with a big handle may need a few extra millimetres one way; a squat candle may leave too much air on top. We can tweak the cube to 150 mm or 160 mm, or make it slightly taller, if that suits your product better. Our guide on how to measure a product before choosing a box covers wraps, handles and lids.

Box Styles for a Small Cube
The simplest style is a regular slotted container, with four flaps top and bottom that close with tape. It is economical and strong, and it suits plain shipping. A roll-end tuck-front mailer closes without tape, opens like a gift box and gives a better unboxing moment; it is the most popular choice for printed six-inch boxes sent to customers.
Crash-lock bases make assembly quicker for busy packing benches, because the base locks as the box is opened. Two-piece boxes with a separate lid feel premium and suit gift hampers and subscription boxes. If you post mugs, a mailer with an insert is often the best combination.
Protecting Mugs, Candles and Glass
Many products that fit a six-inch cube are fragile: ceramic mugs, glass candle jars, small vases and preserves. The box alone will not stop them knocking against the walls, so an insert is worth considering. A corrugated cross-divider holds a mug centred, with its handle in one quarter. A die-cut collar or cradle supports a candle jar at the base and the shoulders. Two layers of card at the bottom absorb drops.
Inserts are cut from the same board as the box and can be printed or left plain. They replace loose fill, which customers often dislike, and they speed up packing because every product goes into exactly the same place.
If you send a mixture of single mugs and pairs, one box size with two insert options keeps things simple. The outer stays the same, which means one print run and one stock line, and the packer simply chooses the insert that matches the order. That is far easier to manage than two box sizes that look almost identical on the shelf. A cross-divider insert cut for mugs replaces loose fill and keeps the handle away from the walls.
Board, Print and Finish
E-flute corrugated is the usual choice for printed six-inch mailers. It is thin enough to fold neatly, strong enough for post and smooth enough for sharp print. B-flute is thicker and better for heavier contents such as a pair of mugs or a stack of jars. White liners show colour brightly; kraft liners give a natural look and hide scuffs.
On a cube, every side is the same size, so print can wrap evenly around the box. A logo on the lid, a pattern on the sides and a message inside the lid is a common and effective layout. Inside print is especially effective on mailers, because it is seen as the lid opens. Matt or gloss varnish adds protection to printed white boxes. White-lined board takes full colour print across the lid, while kraft suits one or two solid colours.
Who Uses Six-Inch Boxes
Ceramicists and mug printers use them for single mugs. Candle makers use them for large jars and gift sets. Plant sellers use them for small potted plants. Gift shops use them for mini hampers, and subscription brands use them for small monthly boxes. Coffee roasters send a bag of beans with a mug in the same cube.
The common thread is a small, often fragile product sent by post, where presentation matters but the box must also protect. A printed six-inch cube does both at a sensible cost.
Corporate gifting teams use the six-inch cube too, filling it with a branded mug, a bag of coffee and a card for new starters or clients. A printed cube with the company logo on the lid turns a handful of small items into a proper welcome pack that sits on a desk until it is opened. Sellers posting a few parcels a week often start with our boxes for small businesses and move to a printed cube later.
Measure Across the Handle, Then Decide Between 150 and 152 mm
Most six-inch orders go wrong at the measuring stage rather than the printing stage. Measure your product at its widest point, including a mug handle or a jar lid, then add the thickness of any wrap or insert. If that figure lands at 148 mm or less, the exact 152 mm cube works; if it is tight, ask for 155 or 160 mm rather than forcing the fit. Send the number with a note on what goes inside and we will suggest the board and the mailer or slotted style that suits it, in a custom quote emailed within one working day.
For artwork, supply one design for the lid and one for the sides; a cube looks neat when the side panels repeat. The free proof lays all six faces flat so you can check the lid reads the right way up. From approval, allow 4 to 7 working days for production and 2 to 3 for tracked delivery, and tell us within 10 days if any cube arrives misprinted or crushed.

6 x 6 x 6 Inch Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering 6 x 6 x 6 inch boxes.
What is 6 x 6 x 6 inches in millimetres?
It is 152 x 152 x 152 mm. That is usually the internal size; the outside is a few millimetres larger because of board thickness.
Will a standard mug fit?
Most standard mugs fit with room for wrapping or an insert. Measure across the handle to be sure.
Do I need an insert for a mug?
We recommend one for fragile items. A cross-divider or cradle holds the mug centred and replaces loose fill.
Which style is best for posting?
A roll-end tuck-front mailer closes without tape and gives a gift-like opening. A slotted container with tape is the economical option.
Can you make it slightly bigger?
Yes. We can adjust to 150 mm, 160 mm or other sizes, or make the box taller or shallower to suit your product.
Is E-flute strong enough for two mugs?
For heavier contents we often suggest B-flute. Tell us the weight and we will recommend a board.
Can you print all six sides?
Yes. Print can wrap around every side, and inside print is also available on mailers.
Do these boxes stack well?
Cubes stack evenly and sit neatly on shelves and in delivery vans, which is one reason they are so popular.
Can I use this box for a small plant?
Yes. A taller variant with a collar insert holds a potted plant upright. Mention the pot size when you ask for a quote.
How few six-inch boxes can I order?
Minimums are low and quoted per job, so small businesses can order a practical quantity.
What if a mug breaks because a box was faulty?
Report any misprinted or damaged boxes within 10 days of delivery and we will reprint or refund them.
