Custom Regular Slotted Containers
Custom regular slotted containers are the plain-speaking workhorse of the warehouse: four equal flaps top and bottom that meet in the middle, taped shut and stacked high. We cut them to your exact internal dimensions in the corrugated grade your load needs, and print your logo or handling marks on the side panels.

Why the RSC Is Still the Default Shipping Carton
Walk into almost any distribution centre and most of the brown boxes on the racking will be regular slotted containers, usually shortened to RSC. The design is about as efficient as corrugated gets. A single sheet of board is creased and slotted so that all four flaps on each end are the same depth, which means the outer flaps meet in the centre and very little board is wasted in the cutting.
That simplicity is the reason people keep choosing it. An RSC folds up quickly by hand or on a case erector, closes with a single strip of tape along the seam, and stacks squarely because the walls carry the load straight down. It ships flat in bundles, so a pallet of unmade cartons takes up a fraction of the room the made-up boxes would. p1 Cartons with flaps that fully overlap for extra base strength are on our full overlap containers page.
Choosing Single Wall or Double Wall Board
The board grade matters more than any other decision on an RSC. Single wall corrugated, typically a B or C flute, suits cartons holding clothing, books, boxed goods and lighter consumer products. It is easy to fold, takes print well and keeps freight weight down.
Double wall board pairs two flutes, often B and C together, and is the better choice when a carton will carry heavy items, sit at the bottom of a tall pallet stack or travel through several depots before it is opened. If you are shipping tins, bottles, hardware or anything with sharp corners, start your conversation with double wall. p1 The flute combinations are explained on our double wall corrugated boxes page.
- E flute single wall for small, neat cartons that will be printed
- B or C flute single wall for general picking and packing
- BC double wall for heavy, dense or multi-drop shipments
- White or kraft outer liner depending on how the box will be seen

Measuring Regular Slotted Containers Correctly
Box sizes are always quoted as internal length, width and depth, in that order. Length is the longer side of the opening, width the shorter, and depth runs from the opening to the base. Measure the product or the inner pack, then add a small allowance for void fill or protective wrap. A few millimetres on each side is enough for snug goods; allow more if you are using bubble wrap or paper cushioning.
One quirk of the RSC is worth knowing. Because the flaps are half the width of the box, a very wide and shallow carton leaves a long seam with short flaps that can bow under weight. If your product is flat, a folder-style box or a die-cut mailer may serve you better, and we are happy to say so when you send us your sizes.
Printing on a Working Carton
Most RSCs are printed in one or two flexo colours straight onto the kraft board, which keeps the cost low and gives a crisp, honest look. That suits a logo, a web address, handling symbols, a product code panel or a simple instruction such as which way up to store the box.
If the carton doubles as the customer's first impression, for example for a direct-to-consumer brand shipping larger items, we can print on a white liner for brighter colours, or apply a litho-laminated sheet for photographic artwork. Bear in mind that heavier print coverage adds time and cost to a box that is often thrown away within minutes of arriving, so we usually suggest putting your effort into one strong side panel rather than covering every face. p1 Litho-laminated artwork is compared with flexo in the guide to print and finish options.
Where Regular Slotted Containers Earn Their Keep
The RSC is the carton you reach for when you need lots of boxes that do the same job reliably. Wholesalers use them to send cases of goods to retailers. Online shops use them for anything that will not fit a mailer box. Manufacturers use them as outer shippers holding a dozen retail cartons, and removal and storage firms use them because they stack neatly in a van and a unit.
They also work well as an inner carton within a larger pallet load, where uniform sizes make it easier to build a stable stack and wrap it tight. If you are standardising your packing bench, a small family of RSC sizes that covers most of your orders can cut down on void fill and speed up packing noticeably. p1 Oversized loads move up to our large cardboard boxes for bulky goods.
Packing, Sealing and Stacking Tips
A well-made RSC can still fail if it is packed carelessly. Fill the carton so the contents cannot shift, because a half-empty box crushes far more easily than a full one when another carton is placed on top. Paper fill, air pillows or a simple corrugated pad on the base all help the walls do their work.
Seal the top and bottom seams with a single strip of good tape running along the centre join and a short way down each end panel. For heavier loads, an H-pattern of tape across the edges as well as the seam adds a lot of security. When building a pallet, line the cartons up so their corners sit on top of one another; the corners carry most of the weight, and an overhang or brick pattern that leaves corners unsupported is the most common cause of collapsed stacks.
If you store empty cartons for a while, keep them dry and off the floor. Corrugated board softens in damp conditions and loses stacking strength, which is easy to avoid with a shelf or a pallet under the bundles. p2 Edge protection for pallets is covered on our edge protectors page.
Give Internal Dimensions and the Packed Weight Together
An RSC is specified by two numbers that are nearly always sent apart: the inside size and the packed weight. Send them together, length by width by depth measured inside the box you need, and the weight of a full carton, and we can choose the flute and liner in one go. If you only have an old carton's outside size, send that and say so; we work back to the inside through the board thickness.
Say how high the cartons stack on a pallet and whether they go through a parcel network, which is harder on a box than a pallet delivery. Choose one strong side panel for the print rather than covering every face. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day with the board grade we recommend, and the minimum set per job.
The free proof shows the artwork on the flat carton so you can see where the logo lands against the flaps. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the flat bundles reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Warehouses that need a lift-off lid for picking add half slotted containers with a separate lid in the same board.

Regular Slotted Containers Questions
What buyers ask before ordering regular slotted containers.
What does regular slotted container actually mean?
It describes a carton cut from one sheet of corrugated board where all four flaps at each end are the same depth. The two longer outer flaps meet in the middle, so the box closes with a single strip of tape. It is the most common shipping carton style because it wastes very little board.
Should I order single wall or double wall?
Single wall handles most consumer goods, clothing and boxed products comfortably. Choose double wall when a packed carton is heavy, has hard or sharp items inside, or will sit low in a tall stack. Tell us the packed weight and we will recommend a grade on your custom quote.
Are the sizes internal or external?
We always work from internal dimensions, given as length by width by depth. That way your product fits as planned, regardless of board thickness. If you only have external sizes from an old carton, send those and we will work back to the inside.
Can you print a logo on a plain brown RSC?
Yes. One or two colour flexo print on kraft board is the usual route and looks clean and confident. It suits logos, web addresses, handling marks and product codes without adding much to the cost.
Is full colour printing possible on this style?
It is, using a white liner for digital print or a litho-laminated sheet for photographic artwork. It costs more than flexo, so we suggest it when the carton is part of the customer's unboxing rather than a trade shipper.
Will an RSC work for a very flat product?
It can, but flat, wide cartons end up with short flaps that may sag under weight. For prints, frames or flat packs a folder box or die-cut mailer is often a better fit. We will flag this if your sizes point that way.
Can I add a tear strip for easier opening?
Yes, a tear strip can be built into the board so the recipient pulls a tab instead of reaching for a blade. It is popular with retailers who open lots of cases and do not want stock damaged by knives.
How low can the minimum order go?
Minimums depend on size, board and print, so we quote them per job rather than setting one figure. Plain or one colour cartons usually allow smaller runs than heavily printed ones. Ask for a custom quote with the quantity you have in mind.
Do the cartons arrive flat?
Yes, they ship flat and bundled, which saves a lot of storage space. They fold up in seconds by hand or can be run through a case erector if your warehouse uses one.
What happens after I approve the proof?
Production starts and takes 4 to 7 working days, then the cartons travel free on tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days. You get the proof free of charge before any of that begins.
Can I order several sizes in one job?
Yes, many customers order a small family of sizes printed with the same artwork. Grouping them in one order keeps the branding consistent and often makes the per-box cost easier to manage.
