Where Large Mylar Bags Earn Their Place
Big foil bags are built for two kinds of customer. The first is the person putting food away for the long term: a family filling a few buckets with rice, lentils and flour, or a smallholder storing grain from a good harvest. The second is the business moving dry goods in volume, from a wholesaler splitting sacks of oats into retail-friendly packs to a bulk store selling refills by weight. Both need a bag that blocks oxygen and light far better than a plastic sack can.
A large mylar bag does that by laminating a layer of aluminium foil between plastic films. The foil is the barrier; the plastic gives strength and allows the bag to be heat-sealed. Combined with an oxygen absorber dropped in before sealing, the bag creates a low-oxygen space that slows the staling of dry food. That is why preppers line storage buckets with them and why wholesalers trust them for products that sit in a warehouse before sale. Kibble and pasta with sharp edges go in our heavy duty mylar bags for sharp kibble.
Sizing a Big Bag for Buckets and Sacks
Large bags are usually sized around the container they go into or the weight they hold. A bucket liner must be tall enough to fold over the rim and still leave a good length for sealing, so it is typically much taller than the bucket itself. A free-standing retail bag is sized for weight: a 5 kg pack of rice needs a different footprint from a 5 kg pack of puffed cereal, because density changes the volume dramatically.
The simplest way to size accurately is to fill a sample bag or a bin liner with the actual product, mark the fill line and measure. Add at least 50 mm above the fill line for the seal and a little more if you want a hang hole or a zip. Send those measurements, or the bucket dimensions, and we will propose a flat size and gusset before quoting. Our method for sizing a bag from a bucket covers the fold at the top.
- Bucket liners: taller than the bucket, with spare film to fold and seal
- Retail packs: sized by product weight and density
- Always allow headroom above the fill line for sealing

Film Thickness and Bag Construction
Thickness is the biggest decision with large bags. Heavy contents press on the seams and corners, and sharp foods such as pasta, dried beans and kibble can puncture thin film when the bag is lifted. For anything over a few kilos we recommend a thicker laminate, measured in microns, with reinforced side seals. Thicker film also feels more substantial in the hand, which helps a premium bulk product justify its price.
Construction matters as much as thickness. A flat three-side-seal bag is the most economical shape and works well as a bucket liner. A bottom-gusseted stand-up bag sits upright on a shelf and is easier to fill. Side-gusseted bags behave like a coffee sack, with a square base that stacks neatly on a pallet. Each style can be supplied with a tear notch so the customer can open it cleanly without scissors. Matt, gloss and metallised films are shown in our film finishes compared guide.
Printing on Large Foil Bags
A large bag offers a big, flat print area that works almost like a poster. Brands selling bulk goods use it to tell people what is inside, how to store it once opened and how to reseal it. Clear storage instructions on the back panel reduce questions and returns, and a strong front panel helps the product get spotted in a stockroom or a farm shop.
We print in full colour onto the outer film. Silver foil shows through any area left unprinted, giving a metallic look, or we can lay a white base under the artwork so colours stay bright and true. Matt and gloss outer films change the feel considerably: matt reads as natural and premium, gloss is brighter and easier to wipe clean. Small text such as batch codes can be left blank for an inkjet or label applied at packing. Brands that change the harvest or the batch often add labels for changing batches to a base design.
Closures: Heat Seal, Zip or Both
For long-term storage the heat seal is what does the work. A zip alone will not keep oxygen out over months, so serious storage bags are always heat-sealed after filling, even if they also have a zip. The zip then becomes useful after first opening, letting the customer use part of the contents and close the bag again.
Retail customers buying large packs of oats or kibble appreciate a press-to-close zip because the bag is used over weeks. Bucket liners for storage often skip the zip entirely and rely on a wide seal area, since they are only opened when the bucket is put into use. If you are not sure which you need, tell us how the bag will be opened and used and we will recommend a closure. Bags that must stand on a shelf use the base on our gusseted mylar bags that stand page.
Notes on Food Contact and Storage
Food-contact grade film is available on request for bags that will hold food directly, and it is worth stating this clearly when you ask for a custom quote. We can also supply bags without a food-contact layer for non-food uses such as seed storage, documents or spare parts. Storage life depends on the food, the oxygen absorber, the seal quality and the conditions where the bag is kept, so we do not promise a particular shelf life.
Keep sealed bags in a cool, dry place away from rodents, which will chew through any film. Many people store large bags inside lidded buckets for exactly that reason. A dark cupboard, garage shelf or cellar with a steady temperature suits them far better than a loft that bakes in summer. Long-term food stores use our freeze dried food mylar bags with a thicker barrier.
Measure the Bucket, Not the Bag You Have Now
Large mylar bags are usually lining a bucket or standing in a sack, so the useful measurement is the container, not an old bag. Measure the inside diameter and height of the bucket, or the footprint of the shelf space, and tell us the fill weight and the product; rice, oats and kibble all take different volumes per kilo. Choose the film thickness by the weight and the sharpness of the contents, heavier for kibble and pasta, and the closure by use: a heat seal for long storage, a zip for a bag opened weekly, both for a bag that does each. Say if the bag needs to stand on a shelf, which calls for a gusset. Artwork covers the front, the back with ingredients and allergens, and the gusset, sent as vector files, and the free proof shows the print across all three. A custom quote comes by email within one working day with bags from £0.25 and minimums low and quoted per job. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval with free tracked UK mainland delivery. Mills packing 1.5 kg of flour use our flour mylar bags for 1.5 kg.

Large Mylar Bags Questions
What buyers ask before ordering large mylar bags.
What size mylar bag fits a standard storage bucket?
Bucket liners are cut taller than the bucket so the top can be gathered and heat-sealed above the rim. Send us the bucket's height and diameter and we will size the liner to suit it.
Do large mylar bags need oxygen absorbers?
For long-term storage of dry food, most people add an oxygen absorber before heat-sealing. The foil bag stops new air getting in, while the absorber removes most of the oxygen already inside.
Is a zip enough to keep food fresh for months?
No. A zip is convenient after opening, but storage bags should be heat-sealed for a proper barrier. Many retail bulk bags have both, sealed above the zip at packing.
Which film thickness should I choose for 10 kg of rice?
Heavier fills need a thicker laminate with strong side seals, especially if the bag will be lifted by the top. We recommend a thickness with your custom quote based on weight and product type.
Can large bags stand up on a shelf?
Yes, if they are made with a bottom gusset or a block bottom. Flat three-side-seal bags lie down or sit inside buckets, so choose the style based on where the bag will live.
Can you print the inside of the bag?
We print the outer film. The inner layer is the sealing surface, so it is left plain. Storage instructions and branding go on the front, back and gussets instead.
Will sharp pasta or kibble pierce the bag?
Thin film can be punctured by sharp shapes under weight. A heavy-duty laminate greatly reduces the risk, and we suggest it for pasta, beans and dry pet food.
Does the inner film of a 10 kg rice bag touch the food?
Yes, the rice sits against the inner layer, so food-contact grade film is supplied on request for food bags. Mention that the bag will hold food when you ask for a quote so the correct film is specified. The print sits on the outer layer only.
Can I add a window to see the contents?
A clear window can be added on retail packs. It does reduce the light barrier in that area, so storage bags are usually left fully foiled.
How many bags can I order in a first run?
Minimums are low and quoted per job, so a first run can be modest while you test a product. Prices start from £0.25 a bag depending on size, film and print.
What if a 5 kg bag arrives with a split seal?
Photograph the split seal and the bag and send the photos within 10 days of delivery, and we reprint or refund the affected bags. Seals are tested on the press sample before the run. A split that appears after filling usually means the fill weight exceeded the film rating, which we can advise on.
