Custom Mylar Bags for Freeze-Dried Food

from £0.25 a bagPriced per job · low minimums

Custom freeze-dried food mylar bags are foil-lined pouches with a strong barrier against oxygen, moisture and light, the three things that turn crisp freeze-dried food soft and stale. We print them for small businesses selling freeze-dried fruit, sweets and meals, and for preppers who want clearly labelled long-term storage.

Why Freeze-Dried Food Needs a Barrier Bag

Freeze drying removes almost all the water from food, which is what makes it light, crunchy and long-lasting. The catch is that the dried food is hungry for moisture, which is why a plain printed snack bag without a full barrier is not enough. Left in an ordinary plastic bag, it pulls water from the air and turns chewy within days. Oxygen causes fats to go rancid and colours to fade, and light speeds both processes along.

A mylar bag uses a metallised or foil layer laminated between plastic films. That layer blocks light completely and slows the passage of oxygen and water vapour to a crawl. Sealed properly, with an oxygen absorber inside, it keeps freeze-dried food in the condition it left the machine. It is the reason freeze-dried sweets bought online still crunch when they arrive.

Sellers who switch from cheap clear bags to proper barrier pouches usually notice fewer complaints about soft or sticky products, especially in summer when humidity is higher and parcels sit in warm vans.

Bag Formats for Sellers and Storers

Different users want different things from the bag, so we make several formats, from a small window pouch to the heavy duty mylar bags used for bulk storage.

Retail sellers mostly choose stand-up zip pouches, while storers lean towards flat bags.

  • Stand-up pouches with a zip, the favourite for retail freeze-dried sweets and fruit snacks.
  • Flat three-side seal bags, economical and space-saving for long-term storage.
  • Gusseted bags that expand to hold whole freeze-dried meals or bulk ingredients.
  • Bags with a clear window panel so shoppers can see the product, with a trade-off in barrier strength.
  • Tear notches above the seal for easy opening and a zip below for resealing.

Sizing by Volume, Not Weight

Freeze-dried food is extremely light for its size. A bag that would hold a large amount of fresh fruit holds only a modest weight of the freeze-dried version, and puffy freeze-dried sweets take up even more space, so follow the guide to measuring your product by volume. Size your bags by volume. Fill a jug or container with your product to the amount you plan to sell, then tell us the volume, or send a sample pack.

Leave room above the product for the zip and the heat seal. A bag filled right to the top is hard to seal cleanly, and any crumbs caught in the seal can let air in. For storage bags, allow extra length so a bag can be resealed several times after opening, trimming above the old seal each time.

Consider how the bag will be displayed. A stand-up pouch needs enough product in the base gusset to stand steadily; if your fill is very light, a slightly smaller pouch filled fuller will stand better than a large, half-empty one.

For gift bundles, several small pouches of different flavours often sell better than one large bag, and they let customers try more of your range.

Sealing, Absorbers and Shelf Life

The barrier only works if the bag is sealed properly. Mylar bags are heat sealed with an impulse sealer, a clothes iron on a firm surface or a sealing machine, and the vacuum sealed mylar bags go a step further by drawing the air out. The zip is a convenience for customers, not the barrier; always heat seal above the zip before the bag leaves you. An oxygen absorber sized to the bag volume removes the oxygen trapped inside once the bag is sealed.

We supply the bags; the shelf life is yours to test. How long your food keeps depends on the product, the moisture left after drying, your sealing and the storage conditions. Most sellers test their own product by sealing samples and checking them over time. Food-contact grade inner films are available on request for any bag that will hold food directly.

Keep unused bags sealed in their outer carton until needed. The barrier film itself does not degrade quickly, but dust in the seal area can cause weak seals later.

Printing for Retail Sale

Freeze-dried sweets in particular are a competitive, colourful market, and the bag does most of the selling. Full-colour digital print suits short runs of many flavours, letting you print a different design for each without a big order of each; the print and finish options compared page shows how holographic film prints. Gloss bags make colours vivid, matt bags feel more premium, and a holographic or metallic finish catches the eye online and on a market stall.

Leave a clear area for the legal food labelling: product name, ingredients with allergens emphasised, net weight, your business name and address and a best-before date. If your best-before changes per batch, a blank area for a printed label or a date stamp keeps one print run usable across batches.

Online sellers should think about photographs. Matt finishes reduce glare under studio lights, which makes product photos easier to take, while a glossy or holographic bag can look stunning in a short video where the light moves across it.

Labelling Storage Bags for Preppers

Home storers and preppers often use plain or simply printed bags, with the emphasis on labelling rather than branding. A printed write-on panel with spaces for the contents, the date packed, the number of servings and the rehydration notes saves a lot of guesswork years later, and a plain general purpose label does the same job on an unprinted bag. Colour coding by food type, such as one colour for fruit, another for meals and another for vegetables, makes a storage shelf easy to scan.

Flat bags take up the least space in storage buckets, and gusseted bags hold bulk ingredients. Ask about bundles of mixed sizes if you are storing a variety of foods.

Preppers buying for their own shelves can order plain bags with only a printed write-on panel, which keeps the cost low while still making every bag easy to identify at a glance.

Pour a Portion Into a Jug Before You Pick a Pouch Size

Freeze-dried food is so light that weight tells you nothing about the bag, so measure by volume. Tip one portion of your sweets or fruit into a measuring jug, note the millilitres and add a third again for the headspace a zip and a heat seal need; that figure, not the grams, is what we size the pouch from. Then decide what the bag is for. Retail sweets want a window, a zip and a bright print per flavour; long-term storage wants an opaque foil laminate, an absorber and a write-on panel. Say which sealer you use so the seal area matches it.

Let us know the bag style, the fill volume, the quantity per design and your artwork, and a custom quote comes back within one working day, with low minimums quoted per job. A free design proof shows the print on a flat bag with the seal areas and zip marked. Production runs 4 to 7 working days after approval and the bags ship by free tracked UK mainland delivery in 2 to 3 working days. Sellers who also do single-serve snacks often add smaller mylar snack bags in the same print.

Freeze-Dried Food Mylar Bags Questions

What buyers ask before ordering Freeze-Dried food mylar bags.

Is the zip enough to keep freeze-dried food fresh?

No. The zip is for customer convenience after opening. Heat seal above the zip before sale or storage to get the full barrier.

Do I need oxygen absorbers?

For long-term storage and for products sensitive to oxygen, yes. Choose an absorber sized to the bag volume and seal the bag promptly.

Can I see the product through the bag?

Yes, with a window panel. A window reduces the barrier slightly, so it suits products sold quickly rather than stored for long periods.

How do I size a bag for freeze-dried sweets?

By volume, because freeze-dried sweets are very light and puffy. Send a sample pack or the fill volume and we will suggest a size.

Can I print a different design for each flavour?

Yes. Digital print lets each flavour have its own design in one order, with low minimums quoted per job.

How long will my food keep in these bags?

That depends on your product, drying, sealing and storage. We supply the bags; test your own product to set a best-before date.

Which sealer works with mylar bags?

An impulse sealer is the most reliable. Some people use a clothes iron on a firm surface, and larger sellers use band sealers.

Where should the allergen information go?

On the back panel with the ingredients. Leave a clear area in the artwork; we check it is legible on the proof.

Can storage bags have a write-on panel?

Yes. A printed panel with spaces for contents, date and servings makes long-term storage much easier to manage.

Are holographic finishes available?

Yes. Holographic and metallic finishes are popular for freeze-dried sweets sold online and at markets.

Can I add a hang hole for retail pegs?

Yes. A round or euro-style hang hole lets stockists hang pouches on display pegs.
