Custom Taco Boxes
Custom taco boxes have a folded card holder built into the base, so each taco stands upright in its own slot instead of tipping over and spilling salsa across the lid. We make them in single, double and triple sizes, printed in your colours for takeaways, trucks and caterers.

The Trouble With Tacos in a Flat Box
Tacos are one of the hardest foods to send out. A soft shell folds open as soon as it is laid on its side, and a hard shell cracks and spills its fillings. Put three of them in a flat clamshell and by the time the order reaches the customer, the salsa, crema and pickled onions have all slid into a heap in one corner. The food might taste fine, but it does not look like what you served at the counter.
A taco box fixes this with a holder: a folded card insert with V-shaped or U-shaped slots that hold each taco upright with the opening facing up. The tacos stay apart, the fillings stay inside and the box lid closes over the top without touching them. When the customer opens it, they see a neat row of tacos, just as they would on a plate.
The holder also makes eating easier. Customers at a food truck can hold the box in one hand and pick tacos out one at a time with the other, without balancing a paper plate on their knee.
Holder Designs and Box Formats
The simplest format is an open tray with a built-in holder, used for eat-now service at markets and trucks. A clamshell box with a holder inside suits takeaway and delivery, keeping heat in and the tacos protected. Some shops prefer a separate holder insert that drops into a standard clamshell, which lets the same box carry burritos or nachos when the insert is removed.
Slot shape matters. Hard-shell tacos sit best in a V-shaped slot that supports both sides of the shell. Soft tacos and street tacos need a slightly wider U-shaped slot so the tortilla is not pinched closed. Tell us which you serve, or say if you sell both.
Speed at the pass matters as much as presentation. A holder that is glued into the tray arrives ready to use, so staff only need to pop the box open and drop the tacos in. Separate inserts are cheaper to store but add a step during service. If your kitchen is small and busy, the glued version usually pays for itself in time saved on a Friday night rush. Wraps that are rolled rather than folded go into the longer shawarma boxes with a sauce pocket.

Sizing Custom Taco Boxes
Most taco boxes are sized by the number of tacos: one, two or three. Measure a finished taco from tip to tip and its height when filled, and tell us the tortilla diameter you use. Street tacos made with small tortillas need a shorter box than tacos made with a standard tortilla, and a box sized for the wrong one either pinches the tacos or leaves them rolling around.
If you serve sides such as rice, beans or chips with your tacos, think about whether they go in the same box. A longer box with a holder at one end and an open compartment at the other keeps everything in one container. Alternatively, keep sides in their own pots and use a carrier or bag to hold the order together.
Consider the depth too. Tacos piled high with toppings need a deeper lid, or the lid will press down on the crema and garnish.
Loaded nachos and quesadilla wedges can share the same footprint if you plan for them. A box with a removable holder works for tacos one minute and nachos the next, which keeps your packaging stock lean. The clearance rules are the same as those in our guide to measuring a product for packaging.
Board and Coatings for Saucy Food
Tacos bring salsa, lime juice, crema and grease, so the board needs a grease-resistant coating on the food side. Kraft board with a coating gives a casual, street-food feel that suits most Mexican takeaways. White board makes bright colours and illustrations pop. If you need food-contact grade board, ask for it and the board specification will be stated on your quote.
For delivery boxes, small vents along the lid edge let steam escape so soft tortillas do not turn soggy and hard shells stay crisp for longer. Corrugated board adds insulation for longer journeys, while a lighter folding board is fine for trays eaten on the spot. Burritos from the same kitchen are wrapped in the matching burrito wrapping paper with a grease barrier.
Bold Branding for a Taco Business
Taco branding tends to be colourful and confident, drawing on Mexican folk art, hand-painted signs, lucha libre and bright street colours. Whatever your style, keep the lid simple enough to recognise from a distance: your name, your logo and perhaps one striking pattern. The inside of the lid is a fun place for a short message, a hot sauce guide or your social handle.
If you sell several fillings, a printed tick box on the side or a set of small stickers lets staff mark each box. That saves confusion when a large order of chicken, beef, pork and vegetarian tacos goes out together.
Think about the photograph as well. Taco orders are among the most photographed takeaway meals, and customers tend to shoot from above with the lid open. A colourful inside lid or a printed pattern on the holder frames the food in that picture, putting your brand into every post without anyone having to tag you. The free proof drawn with the holder in place shows how much of the lid artwork is hidden by the slots.
Who Orders Taco Packaging
Our taco boxes go to Mexican restaurants and takeaways, taco trucks and market stalls, street food vendors at festivals and events, delivery-only kitchens, pubs with a taco menu, and caterers serving taco bars at weddings and corporate events. Tex-Mex and fusion restaurants use them for Korean tacos, fish tacos and other variations.
Caterers often prefer open trays for buffet-style service, while restaurants with a delivery trade choose clamshells. Food trucks frequently use both: trays for the queue and clamshells for phone orders.
Pop-up taco nights in bars and breweries are a growing use too, where a small run of printed trays makes a one-off event look professional. Event caterers serving loaded tacos on a tray use the open paper food boats for street food alongside.
Count Tacos per Order and Check the Shell Before Choosing Slots
Taco boxes are ordered by two numbers: how many tacos go in one box and what kind of shell they are. Pull a week of orders and see whether most people buy two or three, since a two-slot box that is usually sold with a third taco on top defeats the holder. Then fill a shell as it goes out and measure it tip to tip and at its tallest with the filling in, adding 10 mm to each. Hard shells need V-shaped slots and soft tortillas U-shaped ones, so say which you serve, or ask for both on the proof. Decide whether rice or chips travel in the same box. Vans that wrap tacos in paper instead order the printed taco wrapping paper in greaseproof for the same artwork.
Email the taco count, tortilla size, shell type, board and quantity, and a custom quote comes back within one working day, followed by a free design proof showing the holder folded. Boxes are made in 4 to 7 working days once approved and delivered flat, free and tracked, on the UK mainland in 2 to 3 days. Boxes that arrive crushed or misprinted are reprinted or refunded when reported within 10 days.

Taco Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering taco boxes.
How does the taco holder work?
A folded card insert forms V or U-shaped slots that hold each taco upright. The tacos stay apart and the fillings stay inside the shell.
Will the holder fit hard and soft tacos?
Hard shells sit best in V-shaped slots, while soft tacos need wider U-shaped slots. Tell us which you serve so we design the right shape.
Can taco boxes be used for delivery?
Yes, a clamshell with a holder keeps tacos upright and warm. Add steam vents so tortillas do not turn soggy on the way.
Can the box include space for chips or rice?
Yes, a combo box has a holder at one end and an open compartment at the other. Tell us the portion size so we size the compartment correctly.
Will salsa soak through the box?
The board has a grease-resistant coating on the food side, which slows liquids soaking in. It keeps the outside presentable during delivery.
What size box do street tacos need?
Street tacos use small tortillas, so they need a shorter box than standard tacos. Send us your tortilla diameter and we will size it.
Can staff mark the filling on each box?
Yes, a printed tick box or small filling stickers make it easy to label orders. That avoids mix-ups on large orders.
Do you make matching taco wrapping paper?
Yes, printed taco wrapping paper can be made in the same design, which helps if you also wrap burritos or quesadillas.
Are open trays or clamshells better for events?
Open trays are quicker for buffet or queue service, while clamshells suit orders that travel. Many caterers order both.
Can a holder insert go into my existing boxes?
Yes, send us your current box size and we will design a drop-in holder to fit. It lets one box serve several menu items.
Do taco boxes arrive folded?
They arrive flat to save space. Boxes and holders fold quickly, and staff soon get used to setting them up during prep.
