Custom Coin Boxes for Coins, Medals and Tokens
Custom coin boxes are small presentation boxes with a tray or insert that holds a coin, medal or token in place behind a lid. Mints, collectors, sports clubs and companies use coin boxes to protect a piece from scratches and present it as something worth keeping.

Why Coins Need Their Own Box
A coin or medal is small, heavy for its size and easily damaged. Loose in a drawer it picks up scratches and fingerprints, and its value to a collector depends on the surface staying untouched. A good box holds the piece firmly so it cannot slide, keeps air and dust away, and frames it so the design is the first thing the recipient sees.
Coin boxes also turn a piece of metal into a gift. A commemorative coin handed over in a printed box with a short story inside the lid feels far more significant than the same coin in a plastic sleeve. For clubs and companies, the box carries the logo and the occasion, so the moment is remembered.
Private mints and coin dealers use them to present proof coins and limited editions. Sports clubs and running events present medals and challenge coins in them. Military associations, charities and companies order them for commemorative coins and long-service awards. Collectors buy them to store and display prized pieces, and gift shops use them for souvenir tokens.
Wedding planners also use small coin boxes for keepsake coins or rings, and schools order them for prize medals at prize-giving. Golf societies, angling clubs and darts leagues present trophy coins in them too, as a boxed coin is easier to post to an absent winner than a cup.
Inserts and Capsules
The insert does most of the work. The most common choice is a foam insert with a round cut-out sized to the coin's diameter, covered in velvet or flocked material so the edge of the coin rests on a soft surface. For collectors, a clear plastic capsule holds the coin inside the foam, so it can be lifted out and examined without touching the metal.
Card inserts wrapped in printed paper are a lighter, more affordable option, and they work well for tokens and souvenir pieces. Multi-coin trays with several cut-outs are made for sets, such as a series of commemorative coins or a full run of club medals.

Box Styles for Coin Boxes
Rigid hinged boxes open like a jewellery case and are the classic choice for single coins and medals. Two-piece lift-off lid boxes suit sets and give a calm, premium reveal. Slide-out drawer boxes add a sense of ceremony when a single coin sits in the drawer. For larger runs at a lower cost, a folding card box with a card insert does the job well and ships flat.
For medals on a ribbon, the box needs extra length to hold the ribbon flat above the medal. Tell us the ribbon width and length and we will cut a slot or a channel so it sits neatly rather than bunching. Larger awards with a plaque beside the medal are made as briefcase-style boxes with a handle.
Measuring Coins and Medals
For a coin, we need the diameter and the thickness, ideally in millimetres to one decimal place. A cut-out that is only a fraction too large lets the coin rattle; too small and it will not sit flat. If the coin goes into a capsule, give us the capsule's outer size instead, as that is what the foam needs to hold.
For medals, measure the width and height of the medal and its thickness, plus the ribbon dimensions if it is attached. Unusual shapes, such as shields, stars or cut-out designs, can be matched with a shaped cut-out. Sending a sample piece is the most reliable way to get a perfect fit. Our guide to measuring small items for a box explains why we ask for one decimal place.
Printing and Finishing a Coin Box
Rigid coin boxes are usually wrapped in a single colour paper with a foil logo on the lid, which looks smart and suits official or commemorative pieces. The inside of the lid can carry printed text, such as the story behind the coin, its specification or a message from the club or company. Folding card boxes can be printed in full colour all over.
Embossing works beautifully on coin boxes because it echoes the raised design of the coin itself. A debossed circle on the lid hinting at the coin inside is a simple touch that people notice. The hinged construction is the same as our hinged lid rigid boxes, which show the wrap papers available.
Keeping Coins in Top Condition
A box protects a coin from knocks and scratches, but storage still matters. Keep boxed coins somewhere cool and dry, away from bathrooms, kitchens and outside walls where damp can build up. Silver tarnishes faster in humid air and around certain materials, so we avoid inserts that could react with metal and use clean, neutral foams and fabrics.
Collectors handling pieces should hold coins by the edge, ideally with cotton gloves, and return them to the capsule straight away. A box with a capsule makes this easy, because the coin never needs to leave its clear shell. For pieces that will be shown often, such as a club's trophy medal or a display at an event, a box with a clear lid lets people admire the piece without it being picked up at all.
If you are presenting coins at a ceremony, think about how the box will be handed over. A hinged lid that opens towards the recipient, with the coin facing the right way up, makes the moment smoother on stage and in photographs. Printing a small arrow or the word open on the underside helps volunteers who are handing out dozens of boxes in a row. Sets of several pieces in one tray follow the build of our rigid boxes with fitted inserts.
Post Us the Coin, or Its Capsule
A coin box lives or dies on a cut-out that is right to a fraction of a millimetre, so the best thing you can send is the coin itself, or the capsule it will sit in, because the foam is cut to whichever one touches it. If you cannot post it, give the diameter and thickness to one decimal place and the capsule's outer size. For medals, add the ribbon width and length so the channel is cut to hold it flat. Choose a hinged case for a single presentation, a lift-off lid for a set, or a folding card box for a large run of tokens.
Send the measurements, the style, the insert colour and the quantity, and a custom quote comes back by email within one working day, with prices from £0.25 and minimums set per job. The free proof shows the artwork and the insert layout. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval and tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses is free, taking 2–3 working days. Boxes that arrive with a damaged insert or misprint are reprinted or refunded when reported within 10 days. Sets presented with a printed card sit well in our presentation boxes with a document slot.

Coin Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering coin boxes.
How precise does the coin measurement need to be?
Give the diameter and thickness to one decimal place in millimetres if you can. A small difference decides whether the coin sits firmly or rattles.
Can coins sit in a capsule inside the box?
Yes. We cut the foam to the capsule's outer size so the capsule is held firmly, and collectors can lift it out without touching the coin.
Can you make a box for a medal with a ribbon?
Yes, we lengthen the box and cut a slot or channel so the ribbon lies flat above the medal. The medal with ribbon box in our size table is 90 x 160 x 30 mm.
What insert colour works best?
Dark navy, black or burgundy velvet shows silver and gold pieces well. Lighter inserts suit bronze or coloured enamel. We can send swatches.
Can you print a story inside the lid?
Yes, inside lid print is popular for commemorative coins. It can tell the story of the piece or carry a message.
Do you make boxes for coin sets?
Yes, multi-coin trays can hold a series in rows. Send the sizes of each coin, as sets often mix diameters.
Can I get a shaped cut-out for a non-round medal?
Yes, shields, stars and other shapes can be matched. Sending a sample piece gives the best fit.
What is the cheapest coin box option?
A folding card box with a card insert keeps costs down for larger runs. It ships flat and still holds the coin securely.
How much do custom coin boxes cost?
Prices start from £0.25 depending on style, insert and finish. A custom quote arrives by email within one working day.
Can our club order a small run for one event?
Yes, minimums are quoted per job, so short runs for a single event are fine. Keep a few spares for late entries or a lost box.
What if a box arrives with a damaged insert?
Report it within 10 days of delivery with a photo, and we will reprint or refund the affected boxes. Check the foam cut-outs against the coin on the day the boxes arrive.
