Small Item, Big Impression

A keyring is one of the most common gifts and promotional items there is, which is exactly why packaging makes such a difference. Loose in a paper bag, a keyring feels like a freebie. Mounted on a neat insert inside a printed box, the same keyring looks like something chosen with care. That shift matters as much when you are selling an engraved leather fob at a craft fair or handing out branded keyrings to clients after a property completion.

The box also does practical work. Keyrings have hard edges, split rings and chains that scratch each other and tangle when they are stored together. A fitted slot or foam cut-out keeps each one separate, protects polished or enamelled surfaces and stops the ring from rattling. For shops, a boxed keyring is easier to display, stack and price than a pile of loose ones in a dish.

Packaging is also where you tell the story. A souvenir keyring can carry a line about the place it came from, and a personalised gift can show the name or date on the box lid so it is ready to give without wrapping. The same small rigid build is used for our jewellery boxes in the same build.

Box Styles for Keyrings

Keyring boxes are small, so the structure needs to feel solid without becoming bulky. These are the formats we make most often:

  • Two-piece lid and base: a classic gift box with a card or foam insert
  • Hinged rigid box: a premium option that opens like a jewellery box
  • Drawer box: a slim tray slides out of a printed sleeve
  • Window box: a clear panel shows the keyring on the shelf
  • Tuck-end carton with hang tab: suits souvenir and gift shop pegs
  • Pillow box: a curved, budget-friendly gift box for promotional giveaways

Inserts That Hold the Keyring Properly

The insert is what makes a keyring box work. A card insert with a slit lets you push the split ring or chain through and lock it behind the card, so the fob sits flat and centred on the front. This is the most economical option and can be printed with your logo or a short message. A foam insert with a cut-out shaped to the keyring gives more protection and a more luxurious look, especially for metal, enamel or crystal keyrings.

Some makers prefer a velvet or satin pad that the keyring rests on, with a small elastic loop to hold it. This suits higher-value pieces like silver or engraved brass fobs. Whatever insert you choose, we cut it to the shape and size of your actual keyring, so send us a sample or a detailed drawing with measurements including the ring and any chain.

If you sell several keyring designs that differ in shape, a universal slit-card insert is often the smartest choice because one insert suits them all.

Getting the Size Right

Measure the keyring with its ring attached, laid flat. Note the longest length from the top of the ring to the bottom of the fob, the widest point and the thickness at its deepest part. Most keyrings fit a box between 60 and 100 mm long, but long leather tassels and bottle opener keyrings need more length, and chunky resin or 3D shapes need extra depth.

Leave a few millimetres of space around the keyring so it does not press against the box walls. For two-piece boxes, check that the lid depth leaves enough clearance above thick keyrings, otherwise the lid will not close flat. If you also want to fit a small care card or a gift note, tell us so we can leave room under the insert. If you are unsure where to measure, see our measuring a small item for a box.

Print and Finish Options

Most keyring boxes use a smooth folding board or a thin rigid greyboard wrapped in printed paper. Full colour printing gives you room for photographs, patterns and illustrated designs, while a single colour logo on black or kraft board gives a clean, minimal look. Foil stamping in gold or silver on the lid is a popular finish, especially for engraved and personalised keyrings sold as gifts.

Matt lamination keeps dark designs looking rich and hides fingerprints, gloss brightens colourful souvenir artwork, and soft-touch adds a velvety feel that suits premium brands. A small embossed logo on the lid adds texture without adding cost to every colour in the print.

For promotional orders, the inside of the lid is a good place for a short message, a website or a QR code, because the recipient sees it every time they open the box.

Who Orders Keyring Boxes

Gift shops at attractions, museums and heritage sites use keyring boxes to lift souvenirs into a higher price bracket. Engravers and personalised gift makers use them so finished pieces arrive ready to give. Estate agents and car dealers order branded keyrings in boxes to hand over with new keys. Corporate teams use them as event giveaways and onboarding gifts. Leather workers and jewellers who make keyrings alongside their main products often use a smaller version of their main gift box to keep their brand consistent across every item.

Bicycle shops, football clubs and pub chains order them too, usually as part of a merchandise range where the keyring sits beside mugs, badges and caps. In those cases it helps to match the keyring box to the rest of the range in colour and logo position, so the whole display reads as one collection. If you are building a gift set, a keyring box can also be made to sit inside a larger presentation box alongside other small items, with both boxes printed from the same artwork so they look made for each other.

Send the Keyring With the Ring Attached

A keyring box is measured with the split ring and any chain fitted, because the ring adds width and sits at a different height from the fob. Post us a finished keyring or measure it laid flat, fob and ring together, and tell us if the fob is flat leather or a chunky 3D casting, as the insert is cut differently for each. Choose the style by where it is sold: a small rigid box with a lid for a jeweller or a gift shop, a tuck end carton with a window for a souvenir rack. Decide if the inside of the lid should carry a message, because that is printed before assembly. Artwork is a logo for the lid as a vector file, and we show the box, insert and any inside print on a free proof. A custom quote comes by email within one working day and nothing is printed until you are happy. Production takes 4–7 working days after you approve the proof, then free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses. Pendants sold on the same counter use our cotton filled boxes for pendants.

Keyring Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering keyring boxes.

How does a keyring stay in place inside the box?

The usual method is a card insert with a slit that the ring or chain locks behind, so the fob sits flat on the front. Foam cut-outs and velvet pads with an elastic loop are also available for more protection.

Can one insert fit different keyring shapes?

A slit-card insert works for most keyrings because it holds the ring rather than the fob. Foam cut-outs are shaped to one design, so they suit single-product boxes.

What size box does a standard keyring need?

Most keyrings fit a box between 60 and 100 mm long. Send us the length including the ring, the width and the thickness and we will size the box around it.

Can you make boxes for chunky or 3D keyrings?

Yes. We add depth and use a foam insert so thicker keyrings sit snugly and the lid still closes flat.

Do you make keyring boxes with a hang tab?

We do. A hang tab lets boxed keyrings hang on a retail peg, which suits gift shops and souvenir stands.

Can estate agents order branded keyring boxes?

Yes. Branded keyring boxes are a popular way to hand over keys at completion, and the inside lid can carry your contact details.

Which finish suits engraved keyrings?

A black or dark board with gold or silver foil on the lid is the classic choice and frames engraved metal well. Inside, a black or grey insert keeps the engraving legible. Avoid gloss lamination, which reflects shop lights across the metal.

Can we fit a small message card in the box?

Yes, tell us when you ask for a quote and we leave room under the insert, or a slot beside it, for a care card or a gift note. The card can be printed in the same order. Its size is marked on the proof.

Are pillow boxes suitable for keyrings?

Pillow boxes make a light, low-cost gift box for promotional keyrings. They suit events and giveaways rather than heavy or fragile pieces.

Can the inside of a keyring box lid carry a message?

Yes, a message, a website or a QR code printed inside the lid is seen every time the box is opened. It is printed before the box is assembled. We quote it as an extra print area.

How long until 500 keyring boxes arrive for a shop opening?

Production takes 4–7 working days after proof approval, then free tracked delivery to the UK mainland takes 2–3 working days. A run of 500 is a normal quantity and does not add time. Allow a few days before that for the quote and the proof.
