Custom Comic Book Mylar Bags

from £0.25 a bagPriced per job · low minimums

Custom comic book mylar bags are clear, stiff polyester sleeves that collectors use for the issues they care most about, keeping out dust, handling marks and the damp that creeps into a loft. We make them in the common comic sizes, with or without a fold-over flap, and can print a shop logo or grading strip along the edge.

Why Collectors Move Up From Ordinary Bags

Most comics start life in a thin, soft plastic bag with a cardboard backing board. That is fine for a reading copy, but those bags are made from materials that can cloud, crease and grow brittle over time, and they offer little stiffness. Collectors who own a key issue, a signed copy or a run they have spent years completing usually upgrade to polyester film, often known by the trade name mylar.

Polyester is clear, rigid and chemically stable. It is widely chosen by archivists for paper storage because it does not give off the gases that softer plastics can release as they age. A comic in a polyester sleeve with an acid-free backing board is protected from fingerprints, spills, dust and the slow damage of handling, and it stays easy to see and show off.

For comic shops, offering polyester sleeves is a sign of a serious specialist. Higher-value back issues and graded books often sell faster when they are already sleeved, because buyers can see they have been looked after. Brands often pair them with flat mylar bags so the whole order arrives in one look.

Sleeve Styles and Thicknesses

Polyester comic sleeves come in a few formats. Open sleeves slide over the comic and board and are easiest to load. Sleeves with a fold-over flap close the top without tape, keeping out dust. Some collectors prefer a sleeve with a resealable adhesive strip on the flap, although the adhesive must never touch the comic itself.

Thickness is usually quoted in mil, the unit the trade uses for film gauge, and is the main choice to make. Thinner film is lighter and less bulky in a long box; thicker film is stiffer and feels more protective. Mid-range thicknesses suit most collections, while the thickest film is used for display and for the most valuable books.

Film gauge also affects how many sleeves fit in a box. A long box packed with heavy-gauge sleeves holds noticeably fewer comics than one packed with thin film, so many collectors use thick sleeves for their best books and mid-gauge for the rest of a run. Larger periodicals use the same film thicknesses in our magazine sleeves in the same film.

Getting the Size of Custom Comic Book Mylar Bags Right

Comics have changed size over the decades, so a sleeve that fits a modern issue may be too tight for an older one. Modern comics are around 168 by 260 mm; older silver age issues are slightly wider, and golden age books are wider still. Magazine-sized comics and UK weekly anthologies are closer to A4 and need a larger sleeve.

A sleeve should be a few millimetres wider and taller than the comic with its backing board, so it slides in without catching the corners. Too loose and the comic shifts and bends; too tight and loading it risks creasing the spine. If you sell or collect several formats, order a small range of sizes and label your long boxes accordingly.

If you are unsure, send us the measurements of your largest and smallest issues and we will suggest the sizes that cover your collection. Treasury editions and oversized issues need the large mylar bags for oversized issues.

Printing on Clear Film

Most sleeves are left clear so the cover is the star, but a small amount of print can add value. Comic shops often print their logo and web address along the flap, which travels with every comic sold. Graders and dealers sometimes print a narrow white strip where condition notes or a price can be added in marker. Convention exhibitors print a sleeve with their stand name so buyers remember where they found a book.

Print is kept to the flap or a narrow margin so the cover stays fully visible. A white underlay behind coloured ink keeps the print readable against a busy cover. Simple, single-colour designs work best on film.

Printed sleeves are also handy for subscription services. A shop that pulls and bags new issues for regular customers can use a branded sleeve for each pull list, which looks professional when the customer collects and keeps the shop name in front of them every time they reread an issue. Shops that seal sleeves at the counter often add logo stickers for sealing sleeves.

Storing and Handling Sleeved Comics

Always pair a sleeve with a backing board. The board keeps the comic flat and stops the spine rolling; acid-free boards avoid transferring acidity to the paper. Load the comic and board together, holding them lightly at the edges, and slide them into the sleeve rather than pushing the comic in on its own.

Store sleeved comics upright in long boxes or short boxes, packed snugly so they do not slump, and keep the boxes off the floor, away from radiators and out of direct sunlight. Polyester protects against handling and dust, but light, heat and damp still matter, so a cool, dry cupboard is better than a loft or garage.

For display, a thick film sleeve can be stood on a small easel or hung in a frame without the cover being exposed. Sleeved runs are then stored upright in our comic book boxes for long runs.

Beyond Comics

The same sleeves suit other paper collectables. Trading card collectors use smaller polyester sleeves for valuable cards. Record collectors use larger ones for inner sleeves and inserts. Postcards, programmes, posters folded to size and old letters all benefit from the same clear, stable film.

If you run a shop selling several kinds of collectables, a matched set of branded sleeves in different sizes helps your stock look consistent and professional on the shelf.

Art dealers and illustrators selling original pages or small prints at conventions use them too, because a clear sleeve lets buyers inspect the work closely without touching it. Trading cards and small ephemera fit the mini mylar bags for cards.

Measure a Silver Age Issue and a Modern One

Comic sizes drifted over the decades, so a sleeve that fits a modern issue is tight on a 1960s book and loose on a digest. Measure the widest and tallest issue in your collection and the smallest, and tell us both; if the gap is large you need two sleeve sizes rather than one compromise. Choose the thickness next: 2 mil for everyday reading copies, 4 mil for key issues that will stay sealed. Decide on a resealable strip or a plain flap, and say if a backing board goes in with the comic, because the board adds width. For printed sleeves, a shop logo or a white grading strip is the usual artwork, sent as a vector file and shown on a free proof. The quote arrives by email within one working day, minimums are low enough for a single collector, and sleeves are made in four to seven working days after approval with free tracked delivery on the UK mainland. Oddly shaped collectables go in our die-cut mylar bags for shaped items.

Comic Book Mylar Bags Questions

What buyers ask before ordering comic book mylar bags.

What is the difference between mylar and an ordinary comic bag?

Mylar is polyester film, which is stiffer, clearer and more stable over time than the soft bags many comics are sold in. It is widely preferred for valuable issues.

Which size do I need for a modern comic?

A sleeve around 178 by 270 mm fits most modern issues with a backing board. Older silver and golden age comics need wider sleeves.

Do I still need a backing board?

Yes. A board keeps the comic flat and stops the spine rolling. Use an acid-free board for long-term storage.

What thickness should I choose?

Mid-range film suits most collections. Thicker film adds stiffness for key issues and display, while thinner film saves space in long boxes.

Will a resealable strip stick to my comic?

No, the adhesive strip sits on the flap and only meets the outside of the sleeve when it is folded over. The comic never touches the adhesive. If you prefer no adhesive at all, choose the plain flap and tape it with a removable tab.

Can you print my shop name on the sleeve?

Yes. We print along the flap or a narrow margin so the cover stays fully visible.

Can you add a strip for grading notes?

Yes, we can print a narrow white strip along the top or side where condition notes or prices can be written in marker. It is printed on the outside face so nothing touches the comic. Shops often add their logo at one end of the strip.

Do polyester sleeves protect against sunlight?

They protect against dust, handling and spills, but light and heat still matter. Store comics in a cool, dark, dry place.

How much are custom comic sleeves?

Sleeves start from £0.25 each depending on size, film thickness and print. We send a custom quote by email within one working day.

Can I order mixed sizes?

Yes. Many shops and collectors order two or three sizes together to cover modern, older and magazine formats.

Do you make sleeves for trading cards too?

Yes. Smaller polyester sleeves suit valuable trading cards, postcards and other paper collectables.
