Custom Retail Packaging Inserts
Custom retail packaging inserts are the cut card, corrugated or foam platforms that sit inside a box and hold each product in a fixed, tidy position. They stop rattling, make a range look organised when the lid comes off, and turn a plain carton into something that presents well on a shop shelf.

What an Insert Actually Does
Open a box where everything has slid into one corner and the product immediately feels cheaper than it is. An insert prevents that. By cutting cavities, slots or platforms to the exact shape of your items, it keeps each one where you placed it, upright and facing the right way, from the packing bench to the moment the customer lifts the lid.
Inserts also protect. A bottle held by its neck, a candle sitting in a recessed platform, or a set of make-up brushes clipped into slots will not knock against each other in transit. For shelf-ready ranges, the insert lets a retailer open a box on the shop floor and see a neat, consistent arrangement rather than loose stock that needs straightening.
Finally, an insert is a quiet piece of branding. A printed insert in your brand colour, or one with a short message beside each product, makes the interior of the box part of the presentation. Heavier shipping sets use the stronger corrugated cardboard inserts described on their own page.
Choosing the Right Insert Material
Folding boxboard inserts are the most common for retail. They are light, cut cleanly, can be printed in full colour and fold into tiered platforms or slotted trays. They suit cosmetics, small electronics accessories, stationery sets and confectionery.
Corrugated inserts are stronger and better for heavier items such as glass jars, ceramics and kitchenware. Their fluted core absorbs knocks and holds shape under weight, and they can be white-lined for a cleaner look. Foam inserts, cut in polyethylene or soft polyurethane, give the most protection and a snug, premium fit for fragile or high-value products like watches, tech and bottles of spirits.
Moulded pulp is another option for products that need cushioning, though it requires a mould and suits larger runs. We will recommend the material that matches your product weight, fragility and the impression you want the box to make. The foam inserts for fragile products page shows the cut-out and fabric-top options.
- Boxboard: light, printable, ideal for cosmetics and accessories
- Corrugated: stronger, for jars, ceramics and heavier sets
- Foam: snug and protective for fragile or high-value items
- Moulded pulp: cushioning for larger runs

Measuring Products for a Snug Fit
Measure each product at its widest points, including caps, handles, pumps and any shrink sleeve. For round items, record the diameter at the point where the insert will grip it, often the base or neck. For irregular shapes, a photo with a ruler or the manufacturer's drawing helps us cut accurate cavities.
Then decide how the products should be arranged. Lying flat, standing upright and tilted towards the viewer each need a different insert design. If the box has a window, the arrangement should present the products' best side through it. Finally, give us the internal dimensions of the box the insert will sit in, or let us size both together, which is usually the easiest route. Our guide to measuring products for an insert covers caps, pumps and sleeves.
Insert Styles for Retail Ranges
A flat die-cut insert with holes is the simplest style, used for bottles, tubes and jars standing upright. A raised platform insert lifts the product up towards the lid and hides the space underneath, which is handy for small items in a deeper box. Slotted dividers create compartments for sets of similar products, such as a row of nail polishes or a trio of candles.
Tiered inserts present products at two heights, letting the back row be seen over the front. Tray inserts with folded walls hold products and make them easy to lift out together. Foam inserts can have finger cut-outs so customers can lift a tightly held item without tipping the box.
Printing and Finishing Inserts
Not every insert needs print, but a printed one can do a lot of work. Brand colour on the insert makes the inside of the box feel as considered as the outside. Small labels beside each cavity can name a product or shade, which helps customers and retail staff. A short line of instructions or a QR code can sit in an unused corner.
Matt or soft-touch lamination on a printed card insert looks refined, while a plain kraft insert suits natural or minimalist brands. Foam inserts come in black, white and a few colours, and can be topped with a fabric or flocked layer for jewellery and watches.
Colour choice inside the box matters more than many brands expect. A dark insert gives light products such as white jars or pale candles sharp contrast, while a light insert flatters dark glass and metallic finishes. If you are unsure, ask for both colours on the proof and compare them against photos of your products. Upload the product list through the free proof request and we will show names beside each cavity.
Who Uses Retail Packaging Inserts
Cosmetic and skincare brands use inserts for gift sets and launch kits. Candle makers, homeware brands and kitchenware sellers use corrugated inserts for jars, mugs and glassware. Tech accessory brands hold cables, chargers and earphones in boxboard trays. Food and drink producers present jars of preserves, sauces and spirits in neat cavities.
Retailers who pack their own gift hampers use inserts to keep a mix of products upright, and subscription box companies use them to make each delivery look carefully arranged. Toy and game makers hold pieces in place so nothing goes missing between factory and shop.
Shelf-ready ranges are a growing use. When a retailer receives a box that opens straight onto a display, with each product already standing in its slot, it saves shelf-filling time and the range looks the same in every branch. Tissue and seals that sit on top of the insert are covered under box extras for presentation.
Test the First Ten Inserts With Live Stock
Fit is the whole job with an insert, so when the delivery lands, pack the first ten with real products before the run goes to the bench. Pumps, caps and labels change between batches, and a product a millimetre wider than the one measured months ago shows up in the first box, not the hundredth. Before that, measure each item at its widest point with everything fitted, decide the arrangement, flat, upright or tilted, and give us the inside size of the box or let us size both together.
Choose boxboard for light items, corrugated for jars and ceramics, foam for anything fragile, and say if a brand colour or product names go beside the cavities. A custom quote comes back by email within one working day, with low minimums quoted per job. The free proof shows each cavity with its dimensions. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval and tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses is free, taking 2–3 working days. Miscut or damaged inserts reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Platforms that fold from one sheet rather than being cut from several are listed as folded product inserts.

Retail Packaging Inserts Questions
What buyers ask before ordering retail packaging inserts.
Which insert material should I choose?
Card suits light products and looks crisp, corrugated suits heavier items like jars and ceramics, and foam gives the most protection for fragile or valuable products. Tell us what you sell and we will recommend one.
Can you make an insert for a box I already have?
Yes. Send us the internal dimensions of your box and the product sizes, and we will design the insert to fit.
Can inserts be printed?
Card inserts can be printed in full colour, including product names by each cavity or a brand pattern. Foam inserts are usually plain but come in several colours.
How accurate do my measurements need to be?
As accurate as possible, ideally to the nearest millimetre, including caps and pumps. A manufacturer drawing or a photo with a ruler helps.
Can customers lift products out easily?
Yes. Foam inserts can have finger cut-outs, and card trays can have ribbon lifts so products come out without tipping the box.
Do inserts protect products during shipping?
They stop products moving and knocking together, which prevents most transit damage. For very fragile goods, foam or corrugated inserts give the best protection.
Can one insert hold products of different sizes?
Yes, each cavity is cut to its own product, so a set can include a bottle, a jar and a tube in one insert. Send every item so the depths are matched as well as the widths.
Are inserts supplied flat?
Card and corrugated inserts usually arrive flat and fold into shape quickly. Foam inserts arrive ready to use.
How long do inserts take to produce?
Production takes 4–7 working days after you approve the free proof, with free tracked UK mainland delivery in 2–3 working days. Foam inserts tend to the longer end.
What if the inserts do not fit my products?
Check the proof dimensions carefully against your products. If inserts arrive miscut or damaged, report it within 10 days for a reprint or refund.
Can you supply the outer boxes too?
Yes, ordering box and insert together is usually simplest because we size both at the same time. The proof then shows the insert sitting in the box.
