Getting the Fit Right for Your Card Stack

Standard UK business cards measure 85 x 55 mm, and the box is built around that. Add 1 to 2 mm to the length and width so cards drop in without catching. The depth depends on how many cards you want to hold and how thick each card is. A stack of thin cards takes far less depth than the same number of thick duplex or triplex cards, so measure a stack of your actual cards before deciding.

Square cards, mini cards and folded cards need their own sizes. If you use a non-standard size, send us a sample card and the stack height you want, and we will size the box to fit.

For a gift set, a box can hold two compartments: one for the owner's cards and one for a small notebook, pen or set of note cards.

Materials Chosen for Feel

Luxury card boxes are made from rigid greyboard wrapped in paper. The wrap is where you set the tone. Smooth black, navy or white papers look clean and corporate. Linen or felt-textured papers suit law firms, architects and heritage brands. Leather-grain papers feel traditional. Speciality papers in deep colours, such as forest green, burgundy or charcoal, pair well with metallic foils.

Inside, a contrasting lining gives a finished look. Some firms match the lining to the edge colour of their cards, so a stack of cards with gilded edges sits on a gold lining.

If the box will be handled daily, a soft-touch laminate or a textured paper hides fingerprints better than very smooth, dark papers.

Colour can echo the cards themselves. A firm with black cards and white edges might choose a white lined black box; a studio with bright duplex cards in two colours might wrap the lid in one colour and line the base with the other, so the box and cards feel like a single object. Foil, Embossing and Quiet Branding

Less is more on a luxury box. A blind embossed logo, raised without any colour, is one of the most elegant options. A small foil monogram in the centre of the lid, or the company name in fine foil lettering, is another. Debossing presses the logo into the board for a subtle, tactile effect.

Avoid filling the lid with information. Contact details belong on the cards, not the box. If you want a message, put it inside the lid where it is seen only when the box is opened.

For agencies presenting a client's new cards, the box can carry the client's brand rather than the agency's, which is a thoughtful touch at the handover. Cards with a raised logo, such as our embossed business cards, pair naturally with a blind-embossed lid.

Ordering Cards and Boxes Together

Ordering boxes and cards together lets us size the box to the actual card stack, and both arrive at the same time. We can print the cards in the stock and finish you choose, then pack them straight into their boxes, ready to give out. Tell us how many cards you want per box and how many boxes in total.

If you already have cards from another printer, send us a sample stack and we will build boxes to fit them. Allow a small tolerance, because card thickness can vary slightly between print runs.

For teams, consider personalising each box. A partner's name foiled discreetly on the side, or a small printed label inside the lid, makes the box feel personal while the main design stays identical. It is a small extra cost for a gesture people remember.

Keep a few spare boxes in stock. New starters arrive, people lose boxes or want a second one for home, and having spares avoids a separate small order later. Client meetings often call for a folder too, and foil-stamped presentation folders can be printed in the same colours.

A free design proof shows the lid, base and lining before anything is made. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after your approval, with free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses within 2 to 3 working days. Boxes arrive assembled and packed in cartons. Any that arrive misprinted or damaged can be reported within 10 days for a reprint or refund.
