Custom Hanging Retail Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Shop walls are covered in pegs and hooks, and anything that cannot hang there ends up on a crowded shelf or in a drawer behind the counter. Our custom hanging retail boxes have a built-in hang tab so accessories, gadgets and small products can go straight onto peg boards, slatwall and hooks.

Why Products Hang in Shops

Walk into a phone shop, a hardware store, a chemist or a gift shop and look at the walls. Much of the stock hangs from metal pegs in neat columns, because hanging uses vertical space that shelves cannot, keeps products at eye level and lets customers flick through a row to find the one they want, whether the pack is a card-backed blister pack or a printed box. For retailers, a hanging pack is quicker to restock and easier to keep tidy.

For brands, it is often the only way into those stores. Buyers for accessory and gadget sections frequently expect products to arrive ready to hang, and a box without a tab may simply not fit the planogram. Designing for pegs from the start removes a barrier to getting stocked.

A hanging box also stays face-forward. Hung from a central hole, the front panel faces the aisle, so your design is seen exactly as you intended, rather than turned sideways on a shelf.

It also protects small items that might otherwise be loose in a bin. A phone cable, a pair of earbuds or a set of hair clips in a box with a tab looks like a proper product rather than a bargain basket item.

Hang Tab Styles

The hang tab is a panel of board at the top of the box with a hole punched through it. The most common shape is the euro slot, a hole shaped like a wide arch with a small notch, which fits standard pegs and resists being knocked off; the five-panel hanger boxes use a folded version of the same tab. Round holes suit simple hooks. Some boxes use a double-thickness tab for strength, where the top flap folds over on itself before the hole is punched.

The tab can be part of the box's top flap, extended upwards, or a separate header card attached to the box. Integrated tabs are economical and quick to assemble. Separate headers give more room for branding above the product.

Tab height affects how the box sits. A taller tab lifts the product slightly and leaves more room for a logo, while a shorter tab keeps the overall pack compact. We show the tab clearly on the proof so you can judge the balance.

Box Constructions That Work on Pegs

Reverse tuck end cartons with an extended top flap are the workhorse of hanging packaging. They hold cables, chargers, cosmetics, hair accessories and small gadgets well, and the tab forms naturally from the top tuck. Window boxes with a hanging tab let customers see the product, which suits accessories with colour or texture. Clamshell-style card packs and blister-backed cards are alternatives for very flat items.

Weight is the deciding factor. A light product hangs happily from a single-thickness tab, while a heavier item can tear the hole or make the box tilt. For anything substantial, choose a reinforced tab, a heavier board and a hole placed centrally above the product's centre of gravity.

Designing for the Peg Wall

A peg wall shows the front of each box at eye level, often in long columns of identical packs. Your design needs to read at that distance and also look good repeated many times, which the print and finish options compared page can help with. Strong colour blocks, a large product image and a clear product name work best. Keep key information in the upper two thirds of the front, as the bottom of a box can be hidden by the pack hanging in front of it.

The header area above the product is valuable. Many brands put their logo there so it lines up across the wall, building a strip of branding that shoppers notice from further away. Use the back panel for features, compatibility details, barcodes and instructions.

A window shows the product itself, which is particularly useful for items where colour or finish matters. Keep the window away from the hang tab so the board around the hole stays strong.

Board and Finish Choices

Most hanging retail boxes are made from 300 to 400 gsm folding boxboard. A heavier board keeps the tab rigid and stops the box sagging on the peg. White board gives bright, accurate colour; kraft gives a natural look that suits craft, garden and lifestyle products.

Lamination protects packs from scuffs when shoppers flick through them, and a matt finish reduces glare under shop lighting. Gloss can make colourful products look more vibrant. Spot UV or foil on a logo adds a premium touch to accessories that compete on looks.

Think about how often packs are handled. On a busy peg wall, shoppers lift boxes off, read the back and hang them up again, sometimes many times before one is bought. A laminated finish keeps corners and print looking fresh through that handling, so the last box on the peg looks as good as the first.

Sizing for Products and Pegs

Measure the product including any accessories packed with it, then decide whether it sits upright or lies flat. Allow space for an insert if the product needs holding in place. Add the tab height on top, and check how far retailers' pegs project from the wall, as very deep boxes may not sit straight on short pegs.

If you sell a range of products, try to keep the box width and tab position consistent so they hang neatly in columns, varying only the height or depth.

Ask your stockists about any size limits. Some retailers set maximum widths or depths for peg sections so packs from different brands fit together. Knowing these before you finalise the design avoids having to remake boxes for a particular store.

If a product is very light, a box can look oversized on the peg if it is made too large. A slim, close-fitting pack keeps the column tidy and lets more facings fit on each peg.

Weigh the Boxed Product and Ask the Stockist Which Hook They Use

Two things decide a hanging box and neither is the artwork. The first is weight: put the product in a sample carton and weigh it, because a tab in single-thickness boxboard carries a cable or a lip balm happily but a gadget with a charger wants a double-thickness tab or a heavier board. The second is the hook, since a euro slot fits most pegs but some retailers use hooks that need a round hole, and that is a question for the buyer, not a guess. Keep the product name in the upper half of the front, where the box in front on the peg cannot hide it.

Send the product size and weight, the box style, the tab type and your artwork, and a custom quote comes back by email within one working day, minimums quoted per job. A free proof shows the box and the tab position. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the flat boxes reach UK mainland addresses on free tracked delivery in 2 to 3 working days. Brands that also sell from a counter usually add a printed counter display box that holds the same cartons.

Hanging Retail Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering hanging retail boxes.

Which hang hole fits the pegs in a phone accessory shop?

A euro slot, which is a hole shaped like a wide arch with a small notch, fits the standard pegs most accessory shops use and resists being knocked off. If a stockist uses heavy hooks, a round or sombrero hole may be needed, so ask them before the proof.

Will a heavy product tear the hang tab?

For heavier items, a double-thickness tab and a heavier board keep the hole strong. Tell us the product weight and we will recommend the right construction.

Can the box stand on a shelf as well as hang?

Yes, a fold-down tab can be tucked away so the box sits on a shelf, or raised for a peg. The crease is scored so the tab folds cleanly without cracking the print.

Where should key information go on a hanging box?

Keep the product name and image in the upper part of the front, since the bottom can be hidden by the box in front on the peg. The barcode goes on the back, low enough to scan while the box is still hanging.

Can a hanging earbud box have a window?

Yes, a window can show the product, placed away from the tab so the board around the hole stays strong. We keep a frame of board around the film so the front does not flex on the peg.

Do retailers need a specific hole type?

Many use standard pegs that suit a euro slot, but check with your stockists in case they use hooks that need a round hole. Changing the hole shape after printing means a new run, so it is worth the question.

Can a separate header card be used?

Yes, a separate header card attached to the box gives more space for branding above the product. It suits products that hang in some shops and sit on shelves in others.

Which board weight works for hanging boxes?

Most use 300 to 400 gsm folding boxboard. Heavier products need the upper end of that range.

Can boxes in a range hang evenly?

Keeping the same width and tab position across products makes them hang in neat columns on the wall. We hold the tab position constant on the dieline even when the box depth changes.

How quickly can I get hanging boxes for a new stockist?

Production takes 4 to 7 working days after the free proof is approved, followed by free tracked UK mainland delivery in 2 to 3 working days. Confirm the hole type with the stockist before the proof so nothing has to be redone.
