Hang Hole Shapes and Strength

The most common hang hole is the 'sombrero' or euro slot, a wide curved slot that fits most peg hooks and lets the box slide on and off easily. Round holes are simpler and suit single pin hooks. Some retailers specify a hole shape, so check with your stockists before ordering.

The tab needs to be strong enough to hold the product without tearing or bending forward. For light products, the same board as the box is fine. For heavier items, a reinforced tab, made by folding two layers together, gives extra strength.

The position of the hole matters too. Centred holes keep the box hanging straight. Off-centre holes make the box tilt, which looks untidy on a peg wall.

When you send artwork, leave a clear area around the hang hole. Text or fine detail that runs too close to the cut can be clipped, and a logo that is cut through by the hole looks careless. Printing for Peg Walls and Shelves

On a peg wall, shoppers see the front of the box and the hang tab. Put your logo on the tab, where it sits at the top of the display, and the product name and image on the front. On a shelf, the front still faces forward, so the same layout works.

Use the back panel for product details, instructions, barcode and any legal information. Retailers often need the barcode in a specific position, so tell us their requirements. A window on the front lets shoppers see the product, which helps for items like toys, cables and accessories.

Sizing Custom Five Panel Hanger Boxes

Measure the product and any insert, then add a little room. The box size is the same as a standard tuck end box; the fifth panel adds height above the box when it is raised. Make sure the box, with tab raised, fits the spacing between peg rows in your stockists' displays.

Thin, flat boxes hang flush against the wall and take less space on the peg, so more units fit on each hook. Deeper boxes stick out further, so check the peg length.

Using the Same Box Online and In Store

Many brands sell both in shops and online. A five panel box works for both: in store it hangs or stands; online it goes into a mailer or padded bag with the tab folded down. You only need one packaging design for every channel.

If you supply retailers with packs of several units, a shelf-ready outer carton holds a row of boxes and can go straight onto a shelf or be emptied onto pegs.

Trade shows are another place where the dual design helps. On a stand with slatwall panels, boxes can hang neatly at eye level, and buyers see exactly how the product will look in their own shops.

Ask Your Retailer Which Hook They Use

The hang tab on a five panel box is cut for a specific hook, and the wrong shape is the most common reason a run has to be redone. Before ordering, ask the shops that will stock the product whether their pegs are single prong, double prong or a flat hook, and tell us; a euro slot fits most, a round hole fits only some. Then weigh the product, because a tab that holds 200 g will tear with 600 g unless it is reinforced. Measure the product and say if a window is wanted, which changes the front panel.
