Why Campaigns Use Door Hangers

Leaflets through the letterbox mix with takeaway menus and bills and are often binned unread. A door hanger hangs on the outside of the door, at eye level, where the voter has to physically take it off to get in. That simple fact makes it one of the most noticed pieces of campaign literature. It is especially useful when a canvasser knocks and nobody is in: instead of walking away, they leave a hanger that says the candidate called by and what they stand for.

Hangers also work on doors where a letterbox is awkward, such as flats with secure entries where volunteers can access the corridor, and houses with stiff or draught-proofed letterboxes that tear thin paper.

They are also flexible for volunteers. A canvasser can carry a bundle of hangers in a shoulder bag, cover a street quickly, and leave every door they knock on with something to read. Teams often note which doors received a hanger on their canvass sheets, so a follow-up visit can be planned for the households that were out the first time. For a matching set, the same artwork also works on our printed door hangers.

What Goes on Custom Election Door Hangers

Space is limited, so every element has to earn its place. A strong campaign hanger usually includes the following.

Photography deserves care. A recent, well-lit photo taken outdoors in the area the candidate is standing in feels local and approachable. Avoid formal studio shots against a plain backdrop, which can look distant on a doorstep, and make sure the image is high resolution so it prints sharply. A door hanger flyer with a tear-off slip adds a postal vote request to the same card.

  • A clear, friendly photo of the candidate near the top
  • The candidate's name large enough to read from the doorstep
  • The party or independent identity and colours
  • Three or four short local priorities, not a full manifesto
  • Polling day and how to find a polling station or apply for a postal vote
  • A small blank note area for canvassers: "Sorry we missed you"
  • The required imprint showing who printed and promoted the material

The Imprint and Other Rules

Election material in the UK must carry an imprint stating the name and address of the printer and the promoter, and the person on whose behalf it is published. Your agent or party will know the exact wording required. Leave room for it on the back panel, in clear type, and check it carefully on the proof. We print exactly the imprint you supply, so the responsibility for its wording rests with the campaign.

Also check that any claims, statistics and quotes on the hanger are accurate and sourced. Door hangers stay on doors and in kitchens for days, and voters do read the small print. The print and finish options guide covers type sizes that keep small print readable.

Card, Shape and Size

Door hangers need a sturdy card so they stay upright on the handle rather than flopping over. A thick silk or matt card prints photos well and survives being carried in a canvasser's bag all afternoon. Uncoated card is easier to write a short note on with a biro. A light coating helps hangers cope with a damp doorstep.

The standard shape is a tall rectangle with a die-cut hole and slit at the top that hooks over a handle or knob. The hole is sized to fit most British door handles and round knobs. A tear-off section at the bottom, such as a reply card or a postal vote request slip, can be perforated so the voter can detach it and return it.

Weight matters for the canvassers too. A heavier card feels more substantial on the door, but a bag of several hundred hangers becomes tiring by the end of a long afternoon. A mid-weight card is usually the sensible compromise, and we can suggest one when we quote. Card weights are compared in the board and card types guide.

Planning Quantities and Timing

Work out your quantities from the number of households in the wards you plan to cover, then add extra for repeat visits and spoiled copies in wet weather. Many campaigns order two designs: one for the first canvass, introducing the candidate, and one for the final days, focused on polling day and getting out the vote. Changing the design between rounds keeps the message fresh for voters who see both.

Leave enough time in your schedule. You will need a day for a quote, time for the agent to approve the proof and the imprint, then production and delivery. Order early rather than relying on the last week of the campaign.

Think also about how hangers will be distributed to volunteers. Boxing them in bundles by ward, or in convenient packs that fit a canvassing bag, saves the organiser time on the morning of a big push. Tell us how you want them packed and we will split the delivery into labelled bundles where we can. Our guide to how custom pricing works shows why one run for three wards costs less than three runs.

Who Orders Election Door Hangers

We print door hangers for parliamentary and local council candidates, parish and town council candidates, independent candidates, local party branches, residents' associations running for council seats, and campaign groups encouraging people to register or vote. Community organisations also use them for referendum and ballot information that is not tied to a candidate.

Smaller campaigns, such as a single parish council seat, often need only a modest quantity and want to keep costs tight. A simple one-sided design with a photo, name and a few local points, printed on good card, can be just as effective as a more elaborate hanger, and it keeps the budget free for other literature. Local agents who also letter properties use the estate agent door hangers for canvassing layout.

Get the Imprint Signed Off Before the Proof

Election print has one step no other door hanger needs: the imprint. Agree the exact promoter and printer wording with your agent before you send artwork, because changing it after the proof is approved means a reprint at your cost, not ours. Then count the doors on your target wards, add ten per cent for spoiled and lost hangers, and decide how you want the delivery split, since bundles labelled by polling district save an organiser time.

Send the artwork, or the candidate photo, text and imprint, with the quantity and any tear-off slip, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day; simple full colour hangers start from £0.25 each and low minimums are quoted per job, so a small ward campaign is welcome. The free proof shows both sides, the die-cut hook and the imprint, and your agent should sign it off before you approve it. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and free tracked UK mainland delivery follows in 2 to 3 working days; misprints reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Shaped hangers that match a party logo are covered under die-cut door hangers in custom shapes.

Election Door Hangers Questions

What buyers ask before ordering election door hangers.

Do election door hangers need an imprint?

Yes. Election material in the UK must carry an imprint with the printer, the promoter and the person on whose behalf it is published. Your agent can confirm the wording and we print exactly what you supply.

Will the hanger fit most door handles?

Yes. The die-cut hook is sized to fit typical lever handles and round knobs, with a slit so it can slip on easily.

Can canvassers write on the hanger?

Yes. An uncoated or matt card with a blank note area lets canvassers add a short message with a biro.

What should a campaign door hanger say?

Keep it short: candidate photo and name, three or four local priorities, polling day details and the imprint. A full manifesto is better left for a leaflet or website.

Can I add a tear-off postal vote slip?

Yes. A perforated slip at the bottom can be detached and returned, which is useful for postal vote requests or reply cards.

Should we print one design or two?

Many campaigns print an introduction design for early canvassing and a polling day reminder for the final days.

What card is best for wet weather?

A thick coated card copes better with damp doorsteps than uncoated stock. Silk is a good balance of print quality and resistance.

Can you print different ward details on each batch?

Yes. If you need different polling station details or local messages for each ward, we can print separate versions. Ask about this when you request your quote.

What is the latest we can order before polling day?

Allow a day for the quote, time for your agent to approve the proof, 4 to 7 working days for production and 2 to 3 working days for delivery. Order well ahead of your final canvass.

Who is responsible for the content?

The campaign is responsible for the wording, claims and imprint. We print the approved proof exactly as supplied.
