Custom E-Commerce Product Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom e-commerce product boxes have two jobs that pull in different directions: they must take the knocks of a courier network, and they must look good on a kitchen table when the customer opens them. We print corrugated mailers and product boxes that manage both, sized to your actual products rather than the nearest stock carton.

Built for the Parcel Network First

A parcel sent from an online shop is thrown, stacked, slid down chutes and left on doorsteps. A retail carton that looks perfect on a shelf can arrive dented, split at the corners or crushed under heavier boxes. For that reason most e-commerce packaging starts from corrugated board rather than folding card.

E-flute corrugated is thin enough to print sharply and fold neatly, yet strong enough for clothing, cosmetics, books and small homeware. B-flute is thicker and better for heavier or more fragile items. Double wall board is the choice when one box carries several kilos or something breakable.

Strength is also about fit. A box that is too big lets the product slide about and hit the walls on every bump. A box sized to the product, with a little room for an insert or tissue, protects better than a larger box stuffed with void fill, and it costs less to post.

Common Styles for Online Shops

Most online brands settle on one or two styles that cover the majority of their orders. Picking the right ones early saves a lot of reordering later.

The roll end tuck front mailer is the most popular: it folds from a single flat sheet, has double-thickness side walls, and opens like a lid. It looks like a gift box but is strong enough for the post.

  • Roll end tuck front mailer with dust flaps
  • Mailer with a tear strip and peel-and-seal strip for easy returns
  • Postal box sized for letterbox delivery
  • Shipping carton with flaps for bulk or heavier items
  • Two-piece box with a printed outer sleeve
  • Product box with a fitted card or corrugated insert

Sizing Boxes to Cut Courier Costs

Couriers charge by weight and size, and many price bands jump once a parcel passes a certain thickness or volume. Before choosing a box, check which parcel sizes your carriers use and design your box to sit just inside a band, not just over it.

Measure your product in its inner packaging and add a few millimetres on each side for an insert or tissue. Internal dimensions are what matter, so tell us the space you need inside and we will calculate the board thickness on top. For brands with many products, a small family of three or four box sizes is usually more efficient than a different box for every item.

Letterbox-sized boxes are particularly useful because the customer does not need to be home. Slim products such as socks, cosmetics, prints and accessories can often fit, and the delivery feels faster even when it is not.

Printing Inside and Out

The outside of the box is seen by couriers, neighbours and anyone at the door. Some brands go bold with full coverage print; others keep it plain with a single logo for privacy or to discourage theft of valuable items. Both are sensible choices depending on what you sell.

The inside is where many brands spend their attention. Printing the inner lid with a message, a pattern or instructions costs little extra and is seen by the person who matters most, at the moment they are most interested. A printed inside also means you can leave out a separate leaflet.

Kraft corrugated with one or two colours gives an honest, workshop feel and keeps the cost down. White corrugated shows full colour more brightly and suits beauty, fashion and children's brands.

Inserts That Stop Movement and Ease Returns

An insert holds the product in one place so it cannot rattle against the walls. Simple card inserts with a cut-out are good for a single bottle, jar or gadget. Corrugated inserts with several cells keep sets apart. Folded card platforms raise a small item so it sits at the top of the box when opened.

Inserts can be printed too, which is useful for subscription boxes where the contents change but the insert stays the same. If you are not sure whether you need one, send us a product sample description and how it will travel, and we will suggest the lightest option that still protects it.

Fashion and footwear brands in particular see a share of orders sent back. A box with a tear strip to open and a second adhesive strip to reseal lets the customer reuse the same box, which saves them hunting for packaging and makes it more likely the item comes back in good condition.

Printing short return instructions inside the lid, or a code that links to your returns page, saves your customer service team time. Keep the language plain and the steps few.

Packing Station Practicalities

The best-looking box in the world is a poor choice if it slows down your packing bench. Think about who folds the boxes, how many orders go out on a busy day, and how much bench space there is. A roll end mailer takes a few seconds once your team has the knack; a two-piece box with a sleeve takes longer but feels more special.

Store flat boxes on their edge in a dry place, away from radiators and outside walls, because corrugated board picks up damp and can warp. Keep a small stack of each size within reach of the packing bench and the bulk supply nearby, so nobody has to fetch a pallet in the middle of a rush.

Tape is part of the look as well. A tuck-front mailer often needs no tape at all, or just a small branded sticker to hold the lid. A shipping carton needs a proper strip of tape along the seam. Printed tape or a plain kraft paper tape both suit printed boxes better than glossy brown parcel tape.

Finally, label placement. Leave a clear, unprinted area on the lid or the largest panel for the shipping label, so it does not cover your logo and the courier can scan it easily. We can mark that zone on the proof.

Ordering E-Commerce Boxes

Send the internal dimensions, the style, the board and print you have in mind, and a rough quantity for each size. We email a custom quote within one working day, prices start from £0.25 for simple items, and minimums are low and set per job so a young shop can order without filling the garage.

Production takes 4 to 7 working days once you approve the free proof, and boxes are delivered flat by free tracked courier to UK mainland addresses, normally within 2 to 3 working days. Anything misprinted or damaged that you report within 10 days is reprinted or refunded.

If you are moving from stock boxes, order a short run of your best-selling size first. Pack a week of real orders in it, note anything that slows your team down, and adjust before scaling up across the range.

E-Commerce Product Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering E-Commerce product boxes.

Which board should I choose for posting fragile items?

B-flute or double wall corrugated with a fitted insert is the safer choice for glass, ceramics or electronics. E-flute suits lighter, less delicate items.

Can I design a box to fit a courier price band?

Yes. Tell us the maximum external size your carrier allows and we will work back to the internal dimensions, allowing for board thickness.

Is printing inside the box worth it?

For most brands, yes. It costs little extra and the customer sees it at the moment of opening, which is ideal for a thank-you message or return instructions.

Should the outside be plain for privacy?

If you sell high-value or personal items, a plain or lightly branded outside can be sensible. You can still print the inside fully.

Can customers reuse the box for returns?

Adding a tear strip to open and a second adhesive strip to reseal lets the same box go back to you, which helps with fashion and footwear returns.

How many box sizes should a small shop start with?

Usually two or three. Group products by size and choose boxes that cover each group with a little room for an insert.

Do the boxes come assembled?

No, they are delivered flat to save space and fold quickly along creases. We can show you the folding sequence on the proof.

Can a mailer go through a letterbox?

Yes, if it is slim enough for your carrier's letterbox size. We make low-profile mailers specifically for that.

What lead time should I plan for a new box?

Allow 4 to 7 working days after proof approval, then 2 to 3 working days for free tracked UK mainland delivery.

What if a pallet of mailers arrives water damaged?

Note the damage with the driver if you can, then email us photos within 10 days. Water-damaged boxes are replaced with a fresh run or refunded, whichever you prefer.

Can you match my brand colour on kraft board?

Kraft changes how colours look, so we will show the expected shade on the proof. For exact brand colours, white corrugated is more reliable.
