Custom Sustainable Boxes in Unbleached Kraft With Minimal Print

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Mailers, cartons and shippers made from unbleached kraft liner board, printed with as little ink as the design needs, closed with paper and finished without a laminate. The idea is a box that uses less material and fewer processes, specified plainly on the quote so you can describe it accurately to your own customers.

Less Material, Fewer Processes

This product is less about a special material and more about restraint. The board is a standard unbleached kraft corrugated or a kraft folding boxboard, chosen in the lightest grade that will do the job. Print is one or two colours rather than full coverage. There is no laminate, no foil, no window film and no foam. The closure is the box's own flaps or a paper tape.

Each of those choices removes a step from the process or a material from the box. A one-colour print uses one plate and a fraction of the ink of a flood-coated design. An unlaminated board skips a whole pass through the laminator. A self-locking mailer needs no tape line on your packing bench. The savings are real and they show in the price as well as in the box.

We describe the board, ink and closure on the quote and print your artwork as supplied. We do not make environmental claims on the box in our own name; data sheets for the board and inks are available from the material supplier on request. For the board grades themselves, the board and card types explained guide shows what each weight looks and feels like.

  • Lightest board grade that protects the product
  • One or two ink colours rather than full coverage
  • No laminate, foil, window film or foam
  • Self-locking flaps or water-activated paper tape
  • Right-sized to the product to avoid void fill

Right-Sizing the Box

The most effective single decision is the box size. A box that is 20 mm too large on each side uses noticeably more board, needs filler, and costs more to post. Measure the product as it will be packed, add 3 to 5 mm per side for a mailer or 10 mm for a shipper that will take a divider, and stop there.

If you ship several product sizes, it is usually cheaper to run two or three box sizes than one large box with void fill. We quote the set together and the dielines share the same style, so the packing bench learns one fold. Items that are flat, such as clothing, books and prints, go in a shallow apparel mailer that holds them still without any filler at all.

Where you are unsure, send the product dimensions and we calculate the internal size. The mailer boxes for online orders page lists the dimensions we are asked for most often, which is a useful starting point for a first run.

Board Choices

Unbleached kraft liner is the default. It is brown, slightly mottled, and strong for its weight because the fibres are long and unbleached. E flute corrugated, around 1.5 mm, suits mailers up to about a kilo. B flute, around 3 mm, is the choice for shippers and heavier contents. For retail cartons we use a kraft folding boxboard that creases cleanly and stands up on a shelf.

A white-lined kraft, with a thin white top layer over the brown base, is available if you need brighter print on one face. It adds a little weight and cost, so we suggest it only when the artwork genuinely needs it. We do not use plastic-coated boards for this product.

Heavier goods sometimes tempt buyers towards double-wall board, but a well-cut B flute box with a corrugated divider often does the same job with less material. If the contents are glass or ceramic, a moulded pulp tray adds protection in the same family of material; our moulded pulp trays and inserts page covers the standard formats.

Printing With Restraint

One colour on kraft, usually black or white, printed only where it says something, is the look most buyers want from this product. A logo on the lid, a line of text on one side, a message inside. The unprinted brown board becomes part of the design. Two colours allow a brand colour plus black for text.

Large areas of solid ink are the thing to avoid, both for cost and for the look. A flood-coated brown box no longer reads as kraft, and it uses several times the ink of an outlined design. If your brand needs a strong colour presence, a single bold shape or a coloured paper tape achieves it without flooding the box.

Embossing and debossing add texture with no ink and no extra material; a debossed logo on the lid of a kraft mailer is quietly premium. We print the inside of the lid in the same pass if you want it. The debossed mailer boxes with pressed logos show how that finish looks on brown board.

Closures and Packing

The roll end tuck front mailer locks shut with its own flaps and is the fastest box to pack. For a tamper-evident seal, a paper tear strip is glued into the lid at manufacture and tears away cleanly on opening; it is a good alternative to a strip of plastic tape and makes returns simpler because the second flap can be tucked.

Shippers with four top flaps take water-activated paper tape, which bonds to the kraft liner and cannot be lifted and reapplied. We supply the tape plain or printed with your logo. Paper address labels with a paper-friendly adhesive complete the parcel with one family of material from outside to inside.

Inside the box, kraft tissue or a folded card platform holds the product. For a run of mailers that must look identical when opened, a printed card platform holds everything in position and doubles as a message card. Our packaging inserts for online orders are made to the same dielines and arrive flat with the boxes.

Buyers and Typical Orders

Clothing brands shipping folded garments in the apparel mailer with a single-colour logo. Coffee roasters using a small tuck end carton for retail bags. Skincare and candle makers in the medium mailer with a pulp insert. Food producers ordering B flute shippers printed one colour as outer cases for a run of jars.

Many of these buyers run a plain version for wholesale and a printed version for direct orders on the same dieline. Others order a printed paper tape with a plain box so the brand appears on the seal rather than on the board, which keeps the box reusable for the customer.

Reuse is often part of the brief. A box that opens cleanly, has no printed address panel on the lid and comes with a second tear strip can be sent back for returns or reused by the customer. The reusable boxes for returns and refills page describes that construction in more detail.

Quotes, Production and Delivery

Send the internal size, the style, the board you prefer and the number of print colours, plus your logo or artwork. A custom quote comes by email within one working day and lists the board grade, the ink coverage, the closure and any inserts. Minimums are low and set per job. One-colour mailers start from £0.25 on larger runs, and keeping the ink to one colour is the easiest way to reach that price.

A free design proof shows the flat dieline and the folded box. After you approve it, production takes 4–7 working days and delivery is free and tracked to UK mainland addresses in 2–3 working days, flat-packed in outer cases. Misprints or damage reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. For the first run, the guide to how custom box pricing works explains where the quantity breaks fall.

Sustainable Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering sustainable boxes.

What makes this box different from a standard kraft mailer?

The specification: the lightest board that does the job, one or two ink colours, no laminate or foil, paper closures and a size cut close to the product. Each choice removes material or a process.

Do you make environmental claims on the box?

No. We list the board, ink and closure on the quote and print the wording you supply. Data sheets are available from the material supplier on request.

Which board do you use?

Unbleached kraft corrugated in E or B flute for mailers and shippers, and kraft folding boxboard for retail cartons. White-lined kraft is available if the artwork needs it.

Does full coverage print suit this box?

Yes, but one or two colours with plenty of bare board is what this product is built around. Full coverage uses far more ink and loses the kraft look.

How do I keep the box size down?

Measure the product as packed, add 3 to 5 mm per side, and run two or three sizes rather than one large box with filler.

Is there a plastic tear strip?

No. The tear strip is paper, glued into the lid at manufacture. Shippers take water-activated paper tape.

Can the customer send the same box back?

Yes. Ask for a second tear strip or a tuck-and-fold lid, and keep the address panel on a label rather than printed on the board.

What holds the product inside the box?

Folded card platforms, corrugated dividers and moulded pulp trays, all in paper-based material and shipped flat inside the box.

Can I have the logo embossed instead of printed?

Yes. Debossing or embossing presses the logo into the board with no ink and no extra material.

What is the smallest run you quote?

Low and set per job. Send the size and quantity and the quote shows the price at that volume and the next break.

How long does production and delivery take for this box?

A custom quote within one working day, a free design proof, 4–7 working days in production and 2–3 working days for free tracked UK mainland delivery.

What if a delivery arrives marked or misprinted?

Report it within 10 days with a photo and we reprint or refund the affected boxes.
