Custom Compostable Boxes in Plain Kraft Board
These are mailers and cartons built from unbleached kraft or white corrugated board, printed with water-based inks, with no film lamination, no plastic window and a paper closure. We make them to your size, show you a free design proof before anything is printed, and list every material on the quote so you know exactly what the box is made of.

What Goes Into the Box
The construction is deliberately simple. The board is single-wall corrugated, either natural unbleached kraft or a white-top kraft where you want brighter print. The flute is paper, the liners are paper, and the board is glued with a starch-based adhesive at the mill. Nothing is laminated on top of it.
Print is water-based flexo for one or two colours on kraft, or litho-laminated onto the board for full-colour work on white. We do not add a film laminate, a soft-touch coating or a metallic foil to these boxes, because each of those introduces a second material that is hard to separate from the paper afterwards.
Closures are either a self-locking tuck that needs nothing at all, or a paper tape with a water-activated glue. Labels, where you want them, are printed on paper stock with a paper-friendly adhesive. If you need a window, we cut an open aperture rather than fitting a film panel. The same construction rules apply to the printed mailer boxes for online orders we make every week; here they are simply the whole specification rather than an option.
- Unbleached kraft or white-top kraft corrugated, E or B flute
- Water-based inks, flexo or litho-laminated
- No film lamination, no foil, no soft-touch coating
- Self-locking tuck closure or water-activated paper tape
- Open die-cut apertures instead of film windows
- Folded card or moulded pulp inserts instead of foam
Material Documents and What We Can Say
We are a box maker, not a testing laboratory, so we describe the materials and construction and leave disposal claims to you. Data sheets for the board, the inks and the adhesive are available from the material supplier on request, and we pass them on with your order if you ask for them when you place it.
What that means in practice: the quote lists the board grade, the ink system, the tape and the label stock. Your artwork can carry whatever wording your own advisers approve. We print it exactly as supplied and we do not add any claim of our own to the box. If you would like to put practical disposal instructions on the inside flap, that is a sensible use of the space, and it costs nothing extra because it is part of the same print pass.
Brands sometimes ask us to compare this build with a laminated box they already use. The honest answer is that a laminated box scuffs less and resists rain better, while this one is lighter, cheaper on larger runs and made from one family of material. The board and finish guide for boxes shows both side by side so you can choose with the samples in front of you.

Styles We Make in This Construction
The self-locking mailer is the most ordered style. The lid tucks into the front wall, the side flaps lock the ends, and the box arrives flat and folds up in a few seconds without tape. It suits clothing, skincare, candles, subscription contents and anything else that goes through the post in a parcel.
Roll end tuck top and crash-lock base cartons also close mechanically. The crash-lock base pops into shape when you open the box, which saves time on a packing bench, and the tuck top takes a paper seal label if you want the carton tamper-evident. For heavier goods, a regular slotted carton sealed with water-activated paper tape carries more weight than a mailer and stacks cleanly on a pallet.
Product cartons for the shelf are made from folding boxboard rather than corrugated, printed and left uncoated or finished with a water-based varnish. They sit alongside the kraft product boxes with your logo in our range and take the same open-window and embossed finishes.
Print and Finish Without a Laminate
Natural kraft gives everything printed on it a warm, slightly muted look. One-colour black or white on kraft is the classic and the cheapest. Two colours give you a logo colour plus text. If you need an accurate brand colour or photographic print, white-top kraft or a litho-laminated white liner is the better base, and the result is bright without any gloss film.
Texture comes from the board rather than from a coating. Embossing and debossing press the logo into the surface and read well under the fingers. A printed inside, where the inner face carries a pattern or a message, is revealed when the customer opens the lid and adds a lot of impact for very little cost.
Water-based varnish is the one finish we do add on request. It is a thin, clear coat that gives mild scuff protection on white board and is specified as such on the quote. We never add a film laminate to these boxes, so if you need a deep gloss or a metallic effect, a different product from the full-colour printed box range will serve you better.
Sizing, Inserts and Protection
A box without foam fillers relies on fit. Measure the product in its packed state, including tissue or an inner bag, and allow 3 to 5 mm on each dimension so it slides in without being loose. Where several items ship together, a folded card divider keeps them apart and stops rattling, and a moulded pulp tray holds bottles and jars upright.
Flute choice does the structural work. E flute, about 1.5 mm thick, is fine for clothing, cosmetics and light homeware and prints the sharpest. B flute, about 3 mm, is stronger for glass, ceramics and anything over a kilo. We suggest the flute on the quote once we know the contents, or you can specify it yourself.
The main practical weakness of uncoated board is damp. A parcel left on a wet step will soften, so for goods that might wait outside, choose B flute, keep the box close-fitting, and print a short keep-dry note near the label panel. Inside a van or a sorting office, plain corrugated board does the job it has always done. Our card and pulp box inserts are made to the same material rules and ship inside the box, already folded.
Who Orders This Build
Natural skincare makers, refill shops, loose-leaf tea and coffee roasters, clothing labels that ship in paper, and subscription boxes that want a plain, honest unboxing. Many of them started with a laminated mailer and moved to this specification after their customers asked what the box was made of.
Wholesale food producers use the slotted carton version as an outer case, printed one colour with the product name and a batch panel. Craft breweries use the crash-lock carton for bottle gift packs with a pulp insert. Stationery and book sellers like the slim mailer with a card stiffener for flat goods.
If you sell through a marketplace that inspects packaging, the material list on our quote is usually enough for their form. For the parcels themselves, the shipping boxes made to your dimensions page covers the heavier outer cases that these cartons travel in.
From Quote to Delivered Cartons
Send the internal size, the style, the flute and the print colours, with your artwork or just a logo, and we reply by email within one working day with a custom quote that lists every material. Minimums are low and set per job, and the simpler one-colour mailers start from £0.25 on larger runs. A free design proof follows, showing the flat dieline and the folded box, and nothing is printed until you approve it.
Production takes 4–7 working days after proof approval. Delivery to UK mainland addresses is free and tracked and takes 2–3 working days, and the boxes arrive flat-packed in outer cases. If anything is misprinted or damaged, tell us within 10 days with a photo and we reprint or refund the affected boxes. Many buyers pair a first order with a roll of printed paper packing tape so the outside of the parcel matches the box inside.

Compostable Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering compostable boxes.
What is the corrugated board made of?
Single-wall corrugated board with paper liners and a paper flute, bonded with a starch-based adhesive at the mill. It comes as unbleached kraft or with a white top liner for brighter print.
Is there any film or coating on the box?
No film lamination, foil or soft-touch coating. The only finish we add on request is a thin water-based varnish, and it is listed on the quote when used.
Do you make any disposal claims on the box?
No. We describe the materials and print the wording you supply. Data sheets for the board, inks and adhesive are available from the material supplier on request.
Can the mailer close without tape?
Yes. The self-locking mailer tucks shut with its own flaps. Where a seal is needed, we supply water-activated paper tape or a paper seal label.
Can the box have an aperture without film?
Yes, as an open die-cut aperture with no film behind it. We can shape it to show the product and keep the edges clear of folds.
Which inks do you use?
Water-based inks, applied by flexo for one or two colours on kraft, or litho-laminated to the board for full-colour print on white.
E flute or B flute for this box?
E flute for clothing, cosmetics and light goods; B flute for glass, ceramics and anything heavier than about a kilo. We suggest one on the quote if you tell us the contents.
How do I protect fragile items without foam?
With a folded card divider or a moulded pulp tray, sized to the product and shipped flat inside the box.
Will the box survive rain?
Uncoated board softens if left wet for long. Choose B flute for parcels that may wait outside and keep the box close-fitting so the contents do not shift.
Is an inside print on the lid possible?
Yes. An inside print on the lid or base is part of the same print pass and is a popular way to add impact without any extra coating.
Is there a minimum run for a first order?
Low and set per job. Tell us the size and quantity you have in mind and the quote will show the price at that volume and the next break up.
How long from quote to delivery for these mailers?
Around two to three weeks end to end. The quote takes one working day, the proof a day or two more depending on your artwork, production 4–7 working days, and free tracked delivery on the UK mainland 2–3 working days.
