Custom Cigar Labels
Custom cigar labels are the small printed bands and seals that tell a smoker whose cigar they are holding, and on a well-made cigar they are expected to look as crafted as the leaf. We print bands, box seals and lid labels with the foil, embossing and fine detail the category is known for.

Bands, Seals and Box Labels Explained
Cigar labelling covers a few different pieces. The band, or vitola ring, wraps around the cigar near the head and carries the maker's mark. A secondary band, sometimes called a foot band, can sit lower down to show the line or a special release. Box labels include the large inner lid label, the edge strips that run around the box, and the seal or warranty label that closes the lid.
Each piece has a different job and a different size. A band has to be narrow enough to slide off without tearing the wrapper leaf, while a lid label is big enough for detailed artwork. Most makers order bands first, then add box labels when they move from selling singles to selling full boxes.
Because they are seen up close, cigar labels reward fine printing. Thin lines, small type and metallic details that would be lost on a large box come into their own at band size, provided the artwork is prepared for it. Makers who only need the band itself can order cigar bands without box seals on their own.
Measuring for a Band That Fits the Ring Gauge
Cigar thickness is described by ring gauge, measured in sixty-fourths of an inch. For a band, what matters is the actual circumference in millimetres. Wrap a strip of paper around the cigar at the point where the band will sit, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length. Add a small overlap, usually a few millimetres, for the glued joint.
If you sell several sizes, from a slim panatela to a thick toro or gordo, you need a band length for each. The band height and artwork can stay the same, so only the length changes between versions. We can set this up as one job with several band lengths, which keeps the cost down and the look consistent across your range. Our guide on measuring a ring gauge for a band shows how to convert gauge to length.
- Measure circumference at the band position, not the foot
- Allow a small overlap for the glued joint
- Keep band height consistent across sizes
- Check that the band slides off without catching the wrapper

Paper, Foil and Embossing for Cigar Labels
Traditional bands are printed on a smooth, lightweight paper that curves easily around the cigar. Self-adhesive bands on a paper face are simpler to apply by hand, while bands with a gummed or glued joint are closer to the classic method. Tell us how you plan to apply them and we will suggest the right stock.
Gold and silver foil are almost expected in this category, but they work best when used with some restraint. A foil border and foil lettering on a deep red, black or cream background reads instantly as a cigar band. Embossing raises the crest or monogram so it catches the light, and the combination of foil and emboss gives the slightly raised, metallic feel that collectors look for.
For box labels, textured uncoated papers and a matt finish suit older, heritage-style designs, while a smooth stock with spot gloss suits modern brands. We can match a Pantone colour for the background so your bands and box labels sit together properly.
Designing a Band That Reads Well Small
A band is often less than 20 mm tall, and only part of it faces the smoker at any time. Put the main mark in the centre where it will be seen when the band is on the cigar, and keep the name short or set in a clear typeface. Ornate borders and crests look superb at this size if they are drawn with lines thick enough to print and foil cleanly.
Send artwork in vector format where possible. Very fine lines and tiny type are the usual reasons a band design needs adjusting, and our proof will point out anything that is likely to fill in or break up when printed. A die-cut shape, such as a pointed or scalloped centre panel, gives a band a distinctive outline without extra print.
Think about how the bands will be applied as well. If you band cigars by hand at a bench, labels supplied flat and cut to size are easiest to handle, and a light registration mark on the back can help staff position each band at the same height. Larger makers sometimes prefer bands supplied on a roll so they can be peeled off quickly one after another. Tell us your method and the rough number you band in a sitting, and we will supply them in the format that saves the most time without risking crooked or creased bands. Seals that need a raised crest use the same press as our embossed stickers for box seals.
Who Orders Printed Cigar Bands
Our cigar labels are ordered by small cigar makers and blenders, tobacconists creating a house selection, cigar lounges and private members' clubs, and importers who add their own bands for a particular market. Hotel and restaurant groups sometimes commission a private-label band for cigars sold in their own lounge.
Personal bands are also popular for private events where cigars are given to guests, such as a wedding or a celebration dinner. These usually carry a name, a date or a crest on a classic band layout, and the cigars themselves come from a supplier the host has chosen.
Shops selling cigars as gifts sometimes order a short run of bands with a simple house mark, so a customer buying a single cigar for a friend takes away something that looks finished rather than a bare stick in a cellophane sleeve. Boutique makers often order the bands with custom cigar boxes to match in the same paper and foil.
Packaging Rules to Keep in Mind
Tobacco packaging in the UK is regulated, and cigar packs and boxes for retail sale carry required health warnings and information. These requirements are the responsibility of the seller, and they mostly apply to the unit packet rather than the band on an individual cigar. If you are printing box labels or outer packaging for retail, check the current rules and supply the compliant wording with your artwork.
We print what you supply and will place mandatory panels where you specify, but we do not advise on legal compliance. Many makers keep their bands decorative and handle the legal text on the box or outer carton, which is the simplest way to separate the two. Where copying is a concern, hologram seals that resist copying can replace a plain paper seal.
Order the Bands, Seals and Lid Labels as One Set
Cigar labels work best when the band, the box seal and the inner lid label are designed as one set, because the same crest and foil has to read at three very different sizes. Start with the band: wrap a paper strip around a cigar of each ring gauge, mark the overlap and measure it flat, then list the gauges you need. Decide on self-adhesive or glued bands, and whether the crest rises above the band line with a shaped top edge. Supply vector artwork, since fine lines fill with foil, and keep any text you must print, including warnings, in the position your own compliance advice requires. A matching custom cigar box can be quoted in the same job.
Send the band lengths, gauges, finishes and quantities, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day. The free proof shows the band layout, foil and emboss areas and the cut line. Printing takes 4 to 7 working days after approval, labels arrive by tracked courier to UK mainland addresses, and misprints or damage reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded.

Cigar Labels Questions
What buyers ask before ordering cigar labels.
How do I work out the band length for my cigars?
Wrap a strip of paper around the cigar where the band will sit, mark the overlap and measure it in millimetres. Add a few millimetres for the joint, and repeat for each cigar size you sell.
Can I order bands for several ring gauges in one job?
Yes, we can print several band lengths with the same artwork in one run. Only the length changes, which keeps the design consistent and the setup cost lower.
Should cigar bands be self-adhesive or glued?
Self-adhesive bands are quickest to apply by hand and hold well. Traditional bands use a small dot of glue at the joint, which some makers prefer because nothing sticks to the wrapper leaf.
Will the band damage the wrapper leaf?
A correctly sized band sits loosely enough to slide off without tearing. The adhesive or glue should only touch the band itself at the overlap, never the leaf.
Can you combine foil and embossing on a small band?
Yes, foil with embossing is a classic cigar band finish and works at band size if the artwork has clear lines. Our proof marks exactly where foil and emboss fall.
Do you print the health warnings for cigar boxes?
We print whatever wording you supply in the position you choose. Compliance with tobacco packaging rules is your responsibility, so please provide approved text with your artwork.
Can I order personalised bands for a wedding or party?
Yes, event bands with names, a date or a monogram are a popular order. Send the cigar size you are using so we can set the right length.
What artwork format do you need for cigar bands?
Vector files such as PDF, AI or EPS are best because bands rely on crisp fine lines. If you only have a raster image, we will check whether it holds up at band size.
Can the band have a shaped centre panel?
Yes, a die-cut point, curve or scallop in the centre gives the band a distinctive outline. It is cut in the same pass as the band, so it adds little extra time.
Do you make box labels to match the bands?
Yes, we print inner lid labels, edge strips and box seals in the same colours and finishes, so bands and boxes look like one range.
How long do cigar labels take once approved?
Printing takes 4–7 working days after you approve the free proof, then the labels are posted on free tracked delivery that usually reaches UK mainland addresses in 2–3 working days.
