Custom Cigar Bands and Seals
Custom cigar bands are the narrow printed rings that wrap each cigar just below the cap, and in a humidor full of similar-looking leaf they are what tells a smoker whose work they are holding. We print bands and box seals with the gold, embossing and fine detail the tradition calls for, cut to fit your ring gauge.

A Tradition Worth Getting Right
Cigar bands have a long history as a mark of origin and quality, and smokers still look at them closely. A well-made band is part of the ritual: it is admired before lighting, slid off at the right moment, and sometimes kept. A band with fuzzy print, cheap-looking foil or a poor fit suggests the cigar inside was made with the same lack of care, however good the tobacco.
For a maker launching a new line, the band is often the main branding you will have on the product itself. Boxes are opened and discarded; the band stays with each cigar from the humidor to the ashtray. For a tobacconist creating a house blend or a private label, it is what makes your shop's cigars recognisable when a customer shares them with friends.
The good news is that bands are small, so even elaborate decoration costs far less per piece than it would on a box. p2 The same crest usually appears on the printed labels for cigar boxes that carry the brand onto the lid.
Classic Elements of Band Design
Most memorable cigar bands draw on a familiar visual vocabulary. You do not have to use all of these, but they are worth knowing:
Restraint helps too. On a band only a couple of centimetres wide, two or three of these elements done well look far more confident than every trick at once. Pick a crest, a foil and one ground colour, then let the proportions do the rest. p1 Our embossed labels with foil detail page shows how a raised crest looks at small sizes.
- A central medallion or crest, often oval or shield shaped, carrying the brand name or monogram.
- Gold or silver foil borders and filigree that catch the light in a humidor.
- Embossed details, so the crest stands up from the paper and feels substantial between the fingers.
- A rich ground colour such as deep red, black, navy or cream that frames the foil.
- Small side panels for the line name, vitola or a short motto.
- A die-cut top edge, where the crest rises above the line of the band for a distinctive silhouette.

Fitting the Band to the Ring Gauge
Ring gauge is the cigar's diameter measured in sixty-fourths of an inch, so a 50 ring gauge cigar is roughly 20 mm across. The band length must wrap that circumference with a small overlap for the glue join. Too tight and the band can tear the wrapper leaf when removed; too loose and it slides down the cigar or falls off in the box.
If you make several vitolas with different ring gauges, you will usually need a band length for each, although the artwork can stay the same. We set the overlap and glue area for each size on the dieline, and the free proof shows the flat band with its finished circumference marked.
Band width is a style choice. Narrow bands of around 15 mm suit slim cigars like coronas and lanceros, while wide bands of 25 mm or more look at home on robustos and toros. The crest can sit taller than the band itself if you choose a shaped top edge. p2 The band width you choose can be checked against the guide to measuring a product for packaging, which covers circumference.
Paper, Foil and Embossing
Cigar bands are printed on fine paper or thin label stock rather than board, so they wrap smoothly around a curved surface. Gloss coated papers give strong, saturated colour; uncoated or laid papers feel more traditional and pair well with deep embossing. Self-adhesive label stock is easiest for hand-applying, while gummed or non-adhesive bands are glued at the seam during banding.
Hot foil is the heart of most cigar band designs. Gold is the classic, but silver, copper and coloured foils all work. Combining foil with embossing, so the foil sits on a raised crest, gives the most luxurious result. Fine filigree needs lines thick enough to hold foil cleanly, and our team will flag any details that might fill in on such a small scale.
A clear varnish protects printed areas from handling and the natural oils in the wrapper leaf. p2 The guide comparing foil and emboss finishes shows which papers hold a deep impression.
Bands, Foot Bands and Box Seals
Many brands use more than one printed piece. A primary band sits near the cap. A secondary or foot band, closer to the foot of the cigar, names the line or edition and is a good place to show variations such as a maduro wrapper. Box seals, usually long strips or round labels that cross the lid and side of the cigar box, show the box has not been opened and carry the brand onto the outer packaging.
Designing all of these together keeps your colours and foil consistent. We can lay out the main band, foot band and seal on one proof so you can see how the set works as a family.
If you sell individual cigars in tubes or cellophane, a band is often enough, but a small printed tag or sticker on the tube can carry your shop name too.
Keep a few spare bands from every run, as they are useful for replacing any damaged in banding or for showing stockists the full set. p3 A matching printed box for a branded lighter rounds out a gift set in the same colours.
Applying Bands Without Damaging the Wrapper
Cigar wrappers are fragile, so how bands are applied matters as much as how they are printed. Self-adhesive bands should only stick to themselves at the overlap, never to the leaf. Ask us to place the adhesive on the overlap tab only, so the band holds firm but slides off cleanly when the smoker removes it.
Non-adhesive bands are glued with a tiny dab of vegetable gum at the seam, which is the traditional method and is gentle on the wrapper. Bands supplied flat and pre-cut make hand banding quick for small makers.
If you plan to band a large number of cigars, mention it when you ask for a quote and we will supply bands in the format that is easiest for your team. p2 Makers who supply a humidor or ashtray with their cigars sometimes order boxes for branded ashtrays in the same foil.
Send the Ring Gauge of Every Vitola You Band
A band is cut to a circumference, so the one figure we cannot work without is the ring gauge of each size in the line. List every vitola with its ring gauge and tell us the band width you prefer; the artwork stays the same while the flat length changes for each gauge, and the overlap tab is set so the band sticks only to itself. A photograph of a cigar beside a ruler helps confirm the figure.
Keep the crest to two or three elements and tell us the foil colour first, because foil governs how fine the filigree can be. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, and the minimum is set per job, so a single private-label blend is a realistic order.
The free proof shows each band flat with its finished circumference marked. After approval, printing, foiling and cutting take 4 to 7 working days, and the bands reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Any required health warnings and legal markings on your packaging remain your responsibility. Tobacconists presenting a house blend as a gift usually add cigar boxes with a matching seal in the same job.

Cigar Bands Questions
What buyers ask before ordering cigar bands.
How do I work out the length of a cigar band?
Calculate the circumference from the ring gauge and add a small overlap for the join. We set this on the dieline for each ring gauge you send us.
Can one design be used across different ring gauges?
Yes. The artwork can stay the same while the band length changes for each size. We prepare a version per gauge so each fits correctly.
Will the adhesive damage the wrapper leaf?
Not if the adhesive is on the overlap tab only, so the band sticks to itself and not the cigar. This is how we recommend self-adhesive bands are made.
Can cigar bands have real gold foil and embossing?
Yes. Hot foil and embossing together are the classic band finish and give a raised, metallic crest that catches the light.
Can the top of the band be shaped?
Yes. A die-cut top edge lets the crest rise above the band line, which gives your cigar a distinctive outline.
Do you print box seals to match the bands?
Yes. We design and print seal strips and round seals alongside bands so the colours and foils match across the set.
Can you design a band if I only have a brand name?
Yes. Send your name, any colour preferences and a few bands you admire, and our designers will prepare a proof for you to refine.
Are fine filigree details possible on such a small band?
Within limits. Very thin lines can fill in with foil, so we check your artwork and suggest adjustments before printing.
What do custom cigar bands cost?
Bands are small, so they are economical even with foil and embossing. Contact us for a custom quote based on your sizes and finishes.
Do you add health warnings to cigar packaging?
We will print whatever text you supply, but you are responsible for the content and compliance of any required warnings. Check the current rules for your product before approving the proof.
How quickly can I get bands for a new release?
Bands are ready 4–7 working days after proof approval, with free tracked UK mainland delivery taking a further 2–3 working days. Order the boxes and seals in the same job so the foil matches.
