The Hinged-Lid Carton Explained

The flip top is one of the most engineered small cartons in packaging. A rigid outer shell is folded from one sheet of board, with a lid hinged at the back and a separate inner frame glued inside the front. The frame is what gives the satisfying click: its shoulders catch the lid as it closes and hold it shut until a thumb pushes it open again.

Inside, the contents are usually wrapped in a foil or paper liner that keeps them fresh and stops loose shreds working into the corners. The whole pack is narrow, upright and strong for its size, which is why the format has spread well beyond tobacco to mints, gum, matches, pencils and novelty items.

Because the structure is so precise, a flip-top carton has to be cut and creased accurately. A frame that is slightly too tall stops the lid closing; one that is too short means the lid flaps open in a pocket. We set the dieline to your contents and check the fit before a full run. p2 The precision cutting is the same as on our small cartons for lollipops and sweets.

UK Rules You Need to Know First

In the UK, cigarettes and hand-rolling tobacco sold to consumers must be in standardised packaging, which sets the colour, typeface, health warnings and what can appear on the pack. Branded designs, logos and decorative finishes are not permitted on those retail packs. If you are producing packs for that purpose, the artwork must follow the current regulations exactly, and responsibility for compliance sits with the brand owner.

We print what you supply and approve. We are not able to advise on legal wording, so please take specialist advice and check your proof carefully. Where you are unsure whether a product falls under the rules, ask before you order rather than after.

Plenty of products that use this carton are outside those rules, and that is where most of our flip-top work comes from. p2 Cigar makers face a different set of rules, covered on our cigar boxes page.

Other Products Sold in Flip Top Cigarette Boxes

The format is popular because it is pocket-sized, closes securely and looks distinctive. Common uses include the following.

Promotional agencies like the format for a different reason: it looks instantly familiar, so a pack of branded mints or pencils in a flip-top carton gets a second glance at an exhibition stand. Hotels and bars use it for matches and small amenities, and retro sweet shops sell sweet cigarettes in packs that echo the old designs without copying any real brand. p1 Promotional mint packs are also shown on our promotional boxes page.

  • Rolling papers, filter tips and roach books sold as accessories.
  • Mints, chewing gum and breath strips in a slim pocket pack.
  • Sweet cigarettes and novelty confectionery for party and retro sweet shops.
  • Matches and long cook's matches for candle brands and restaurants.
  • Pencils, crayons and small stationery sets for hotels and promotions.
  • Party and wedding favour packs with a printed message inside the lid.

Board, Frames, Sizes and Fit

The outer shell is made from a stiff, smooth folding boxboard that takes sharp creases and fine print. It needs to be tough enough to survive a pocket or handbag without the corners softening. A slightly heavier board helps for larger packs, such as king-size or wide formats.

The inner frame is usually the same board, sometimes in a contrasting colour so it shows when the lid opens. For mints, gum or sweets, a foil or paper inner wrap helps keep contents dry and, if food touches the liner directly, food-contact grade materials can be specified on request.

Tear tapes and clear overwraps are often added at the packing stage by the client. If you plan to overwrap, tell us, as it can affect the carton's exact dimensions.

Standard, king-size and slim packs all differ in height and width, and novelty products rarely match tobacco sizes exactly. Measure the contents as they will sit inside, including any wrap, and tell us how many items go in the pack.

We then size the shell, frame and lid. For a first order, we recommend checking a sample pack with your real contents before approving the full run, so you can feel the lid action and make sure the pack closes with a crisp click.

Pay attention to the lid depth as well. A deep lid hides more of the contents and gives a bigger printable face on top, while a shallow lid shows the tops of the contents as soon as the pack opens, which works well for brightly coloured mints or pencils. We can adjust the hinge line to suit either.

Printing and Finishing Options

Where branding is allowed, the flip-top gives you a front, back, two sides, a lid and a hidden inner frame to work with. Full colour print suits illustrated mint packs and novelty sweets. Strong single colours with a foil logo suit premium rolling paper or match brands.

Finishes such as soft-touch laminate, spot gloss and embossing all work on this size of pack, although fine details need to be kept bold enough to read on such a small surface. The inside of the lid is a good place for a short message, a QR code or a reorder line.

For standardised packs, we print the specified colour and layout from your approved artwork without decoration.

Packing and Storing Hinged-Lid Cartons

Flip-top cartons arrive flat or part-glued, depending on the quantity and how you plan to pack them. Small runs are often hand-assembled: fold the shell, slide in the frame, place the wrapped contents and close the lid. It is quick once staff have done a few, and we can include a folding guide with your first delivery.

Store flat cartons in a dry room away from heaters. Board that absorbs moisture can swell slightly, which tightens the lid fit, while very dry storage can make creases crack. Keeping stock in its delivery cartons, off the floor, avoids both problems.

For larger volumes on automatic packing lines, the carton must match the machine's specification exactly. Send us the machine details or a sample carton that already runs well, and we will match it rather than starting from a standard size. p2 Bands and seals for the outer wrap are covered on our cigar bands and box seals page.

Send a Sample of the Contents, Not Just the Dimensions

A flip-top carton is the one box where a millimetre decides whether the lid clicks shut, so the surest brief is the contents themselves: a stack of the sticks, mints or pencils you will pack, wrapped as they will be wrapped. We size the shell and frame to that bundle and check the lid action on a physical sample before the run. If posting is not possible, give the bundle's width, depth and height and the liner thickness.

Say first what the product is and where it is sold, because retail tobacco packs in the UK must use standardised packaging and we print only what you supply and approve; the responsibility for compliance sits with you. For mints, matches and promotional packs, send the artwork and the quantity, and the custom quote arrives by email within one working day, from £0.25 a carton, with the minimum set per job.

The free proof shows the shell and frame flat. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the cartons reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Brands that pack matches as well usually add small boxes for branded lighters in the same print.

Flip Top Cigarette Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering flip top cigarette boxes.

Can I put my logo on cigarette packs sold in the UK?

Cigarettes and hand-rolling tobacco sold to UK consumers must use standardised packaging, which does not allow brand logos or decorative designs. Please take specialist advice and supply artwork that meets the rules.

Do you check that my pack is legally compliant?

No, we print the artwork you supply and approve. Compliance is the responsibility of the brand owner, so check the regulations that apply to your product before ordering.

What else can a flip-top carton be used for?

Mints, gum, matches, rolling papers, novelty sweets and small stationery sets all suit the format. It is pocket-sized and closes securely, which customers like.

Why does the lid click shut?

The inner frame has shoulders that catch the lid as it closes. We size the frame carefully so the click is firm but the pack still opens easily.

Can the inner frame be a different colour?

Yes, a contrasting frame shows when the lid opens and adds a neat detail. It can be printed or left as a plain coloured board.

Can you add a foil inner wrap?

We can supply foil or paper liners to wrap the contents. For food products, ask for food-contact grade liners on your custom quote.

Will the pack survive being carried in a pocket?

Flip-top cartons are made from stiff board for exactly that reason. A laminate finish also helps resist scuffs and moisture from handling.

Can I order a sample to test the fit?

Yes, we recommend checking a sample with your real contents before a full run. It is the easiest way to confirm the lid action and internal space.

Can the cartons be overwrapped with film?

Yes, many clients add a clear overwrap at packing. Tell us in advance so we can allow for it in the carton size.

Can a QR code go inside the lid of a flip-top carton?

Where branding is permitted on the product, yes. The inside of the lid is seen every time the pack opens, so a QR code to a reorder page, a short message or a batch reference sits well there. It is printed as part of the shell, so there is no extra pass.

What happens if the lids do not close properly?

Report any fault or misprint within 10 days of delivery. We will reprint the affected cartons or refund them.
