Why Wrap Soap in Paper

Many soap makers start with paper wrapping because it suits the product. Handmade soap needs to breathe while it finishes curing, and a sealed plastic wrap traps moisture against the bar and dulls the scent. Paper lets air reach the soap and lets customers smell it through the wrap, which is one of the main reasons people pick up a bar at a market stall. Paper also folds neatly around rectangular, square and even round bars, so one sheet size can cover most of a range.

A printed wrap looks deliberate and finished. Where a plain bar with a sticker can look like a hobby, a bar wrapped in branded paper with the scent and weight printed on it looks like a product a gift shop would stock.

Paper also fits how many soap makers work. Bars are cut by hand from a loaf, so sizes vary slightly from one bar to the next. A box has to fit the biggest bar and leaves smaller ones rattling, while a paper wrap adapts to each bar as it is folded. That flexibility saves waste and keeps every bar looking neat, whatever its exact size. Makers who box their gift sets but wrap the single bars use the handmade soap gift boxes for sets alongside the paper.

Wrapping Styles

There is more than one way to wrap a bar, and the style affects the sheet size and where the print should sit.

The full parcel wrap is the most popular for retail because it protects the whole bar from handling and dust on a shop shelf. The half wrap shows more of the soap, which suits makers with swirls, embedded botanicals or layered colours that are part of the appeal. Twist wraps feel playful and work well for favours and sample-size soaps. Bars that need a window to show the swirl use the artisan soap boxes with film windows instead of a wrap.

  • Full parcel wrap: the sheet wraps the bar completely, with folded ends like a gift
  • Half wrap: the paper covers the middle of the bar and leaves the ends showing
  • Twist wrap: a softer paper twisted at both ends, nice for round soaps and soap balls
  • Wrap with a band: plain or tissue wrap, finished with a printed belly band or label
  • Double wrap: a translucent inner sheet and a printed outer sheet for premium bars

Choosing Paper for Custom Soap Wrapping Paper

Kraft paper is the classic choice: strong, natural-looking and easy to fold crisply. It suits rustic, herbal and traditional soap brands and takes one or two colour print beautifully. White or cream paper gives brighter colours and a cleaner look for modern brands. Tissue paper is soft and light, ideal for twist wraps and as an inner layer. Greaseproof paper stops oils from rich, butter-heavy soaps marking the outer wrap.

Paper weight matters. A heavier paper holds sharp folds and protects corners in a bag, while a lighter paper is easier to wrap round small or rounded bars. If your soaps are very oily, a greaseproof inner sheet under a printed kraft outer keeps the print clean. Paper weights and greaseproof inners are compared in the board and card types guide.

Sizing Sheets for Your Bars

Measure the length, width and depth of your bar. For a full parcel wrap, the sheet length needs to go round the bar once with an overlap of around 20 mm, and the width needs to cover the bar plus enough at each end to fold neatly, typically around three quarters of the bar depth on each side. The easiest way to confirm is to wrap a bar in plain paper, unfold it and measure the sheet.

If you make several bar sizes, decide whether one sheet size can cover them all with slightly different folds or whether two sizes will look neater. Most soap makers manage with one or two.

Wrapping speed improves with practice and with the right sheet size. Too much paper leaves bulky ends that look untidy; too little leaves the soap showing at the corners. Once you have a size that folds neatly, keep it the same for every order so your wrapped bars look identical on a stall or shelf. Our guide to measuring products for packaging covers hand-cut bars that vary.

Designing the Print

Because the wrap is folded, plan where each part of the design lands. The front of the wrapped bar is the centre of the sheet, so put your logo and scent name there. The back carries the ingredients list, weight and your contact details. The folded ends can carry a pattern or a small logo. Our free design proof shows the flat sheet with the fold lines marked so you can check that nothing important ends up in a fold.

If you sell many scents, you can print one generic wrap with your brand and add a small scent label, or print a separate version for each scent with its own colour. The first is cheaper for large ranges; the second looks more polished on a shop shelf.

Keep the scent name large enough to read at arm's length. Shoppers browsing a table of soaps want to find lavender, oatmeal or citrus quickly, and a scent name tucked into small text on the side forces them to pick up every bar. A clear colour code for each scent helps further. One-colour print on kraft against full colour on white is compared in the print and finish options guide.

Soap Makers and Shops We Print For

Our soap wrapping paper goes to handmade soap makers selling at markets and online, small cosmetics brands with a soap line, farm shops selling goat's milk soaps, hotels and guest houses offering wrapped guest soaps, gift shops creating hampers and wedding favour makers. Spa and salon businesses also order wrapped soaps in their own branding to sell at reception.

Hotels and guest houses usually want small, simple wraps in their own branding, with the soap's scent and ingredients on the back. These are bought in larger quantities and wrapped quickly, so a plain fold with a single printed design across the front works best for them. Moulded bars in regular shapes are covered under bar soap boxes for moulded soaps.

Wrap One Cured Bar and Mark the Sheet

The sheet size for soap wrap comes from one cured bar and a pencil. Take a plain sheet, wrap the bar the way you want it to look, and mark where the paper overlaps and where the corners fold. A 200 x 140 mm sheet suits a 90 x 60 x 25 mm bar with a neat overlap; a loaf-cut slab needs the 240 x 160 mm sheet. Once a size folds cleanly, keep it the same on every order so the bars look identical on a stall.

Tell us the bar size, the wrap style, the paper, the number of sheets and the artwork, and a custom quote is emailed within one working day with low minimums priced per job, so a small maker can order a printed run. From proof approval, allow 4 to 7 working days to make the paper and 2 to 3 working days for free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses; any that arrive misprinted or creased are reprinted or refunded if reported within 10 days. Makers who prefer an open band over a full wrap use the printed soap sleeves with open ends.

Soap Wrapping Paper Questions

What buyers ask before ordering soap wrapping paper.

Does paper let the soap breathe?

Yes. Unlike sealed plastic, paper lets air reach the bar and lets customers smell the scent through the wrap.

How big should my sheet be?

Wrap a bar in plain paper, unfold it and measure the sheet. As a rule, it needs to go round the bar with a small overlap and cover the ends with enough paper to fold neatly.

Will oily soaps mark the paper?

Rich, butter-heavy bars can mark kraft. A greaseproof inner sheet under a printed outer keeps the print clean.

Can I print the ingredients on the wrap?

Yes. Put the ingredients, weight and your contact details on the part of the sheet that lands on the back of the bar.

One wrap for all scents, or one per scent?

One generic wrap with a scent label is cheaper for big ranges. A version per scent looks more polished on a shelf.

Can I wrap round soaps?

Yes. A soft paper or tissue twist wrap suits round soaps and soap balls.

Do you make belly bands too?

Yes. Printed belly bands work over plain wraps and suit makers with many scents.

How should a soap maker store printed wrapping sheets between batches?

Flat in their carton, in a dry room away from direct sunlight and away from the curing racks, because the humidity near fresh soap curls the edges. A carton of sheets kept this way wraps as cleanly on the last bar as the first.

Can a maker with six scents order a few hundred sheets of each?

Yes. Minimums are low and quoted per job, and six designs on the same paper print together, so a few hundred sheets per scent is a normal first order. Each scent gets its own free proof.

How soon can I wrap my bars in printed paper?

The soap wrapping paper are made in 4 to 7 working days after sign-off on the proof, then reach UK mainland addresses free and tracked in 2 to 3 working days.
