Custom Bar Soap Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom bar soap boxes are snug tuck-end cartons made around the exact length, width and depth of your soap, so the bar sits still and the print stays crisp. We cut them in white or kraft board, print your branding and ingredients, and send them flat for packing at the bench.

A Box Built Around the Bar, Not the Other Way Round

Soap makers rarely work to one standard size. A cold process loaf cut by hand gives bars that vary by a millimetre or two, a melt and pour mould gives a rounded edge, and a pressed bar from a contract maker may be oval rather than square. A stock carton bought online is usually either too tight, so the corners crush the soap, or too loose, so the bar rattles and scuffs its own stamp. That is why we start from your bar rather than from a catalogue size.

Send us the measurements of your largest bar from the batch, or post us a sample, and we add a small allowance for curing and wrapping. If your bars go into a paper wrap or a sheet of glassine first, tell us, because that layer adds a surprising amount of bulk at the tuck flaps. The aim is a box that slides on with light pressure and holds the bar without movement when it is turned upside down on a shop shelf.

Depth is the measurement people most often get wrong. A bar that has been stamped on top, or one with a domed melt and pour surface, needs a couple of extra millimetres of height so the lid flap does not press on the design. Weigh up, too, whether bars will be boxed straight from curing racks or after a few more weeks, because handmade soap loses water and shrinks slightly as it cures. Measuring a fully cured bar gives the most reliable fit. If you sell bars in more than one weight, it is often sensible to settle on two box sizes rather than five, and use a thin card insert to steady the smaller bars in the larger box.

Choosing a Bar Soap Box Style

Most of our soap customers choose between three constructions, and the right one depends on how the bar is sold and on how much of the scent you want shoppers to catch before buying. p0 The lidded soap boxes for gift sets page covers the fourth option if you sell bars in pairs.

  • Reverse tuck end carton: the classic shape, quick to fold, with a tuck flap at each end and the smoothest front panel for artwork
  • Straight tuck end carton: both flaps tuck from the back, which keeps the front clean when boxes are stood upright in a display
  • Box with a die-cut window or vent holes: lets the scent out and shows the colour and texture of the soap without opening the pack
  • Sleeve over a tray: a two-part pack that feels more like a gift and suits premium or boxed sets of two

White Board or Kraft for Soap Packaging

White folding board gives the truest colour, which matters if your brand relies on a particular shade of lavender green or charcoal grey. It takes fine type well, so a long INCI list on a side panel stays legible even at small point sizes. Kraft board has a warm, handmade feel that suits natural and artisan ranges, and it hides the occasional oily fingerprint from the packing table better than bright white.

If your soap has a high oil content or a fragrance load that tends to sweat, ask for a barrier coating on the inside face. It slows oil from wicking into the board and stops a dark stain appearing on the outside after a few weeks on the shelf. We can also advise on board thickness: a lighter board is fine for a single bar, while a heavier one keeps a box of two or three bars square. p1 Makers who want a rougher, uncoated feel sometimes pick artisan soap boxes on textured board instead.

Getting the Print and Labelling Right

A soap box has to do more than look pretty. UK cosmetic rules expect the product name, the ingredients list, the net weight, the responsible person's name and address, a batch code and any warnings to be on the pack. Plan your artwork so the front panel carries the brand and scent, and the back and sides carry the legal detail. Leaving a blank area for a batch sticker or an ink stamp saves you reprinting boxes every time you make a new batch.

Full colour printing on the outside is the usual choice. Some brands add a single colour inside the box, such as a short thank you or usage tip, which customers only see when they open it. On kraft, one or two solid inks often look better than full colour, because the brown base mutes pale tones and softens photographs.

Finishes That Suit a Bathroom Shelf

A soap box will be handled with damp fingers in a shop and often kept on a bathroom shelf at home, so the finish needs to cope with a little moisture. A matt or gloss varnish seals the ink and resists smudging. A soft matt laminate gives a velvety feel that works well on premium bars, while a spot gloss on the logo picks out the brand name against a matt background.

Foil stamping in gold, silver or copper adds a crafted touch to a scent name or a crest, and blind embossing gives a raised texture you can feel without adding any colour. These details cost very little extra on a well planned run and help a small soap brand look established next to larger names. p1 The print and finish comparison guide shows how each of these looks on kraft and on white.

Three Bars From One Batch Tell Us the Size

Handmade soap shrinks as it cures, so a bar measured on cutting day is not the bar that goes in the box. Measure three fully cured bars from one batch, note the largest of each dimension, and send those with the number of scents you make. We set the inside of the carton to the biggest bar plus a slim allowance, which means the smallest bar in the batch still cannot rattle.

If you run more than four scents, think about one shared box with a blank panel for a scent sticker rather than a printed carton per scent. The quantity per artwork is higher, so the unit price is lower, and a new scent needs only a new sticker. Cartons start at £0.25 and the custom quote arrives by email within one working day; low minimums are set per job.

The proof is free and comes before any board is cut. Production is 4 to 7 working days once you approve it, then free tracked UK mainland delivery. For a bar that is sold unboxed at markets, our printed wrapping paper for soap bars gives the same branding at a lower cost per bar.

Bar Soap Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering bar soap boxes.

My handmade bars vary slightly in size. How do you size the box?

We size to the largest bar in a typical batch and add a little allowance so every bar slides in. Send the dimensions of two or three bars from one batch, or a sample, and we will set the inside size so smaller bars do not rattle.

Can shoppers smell a bar of soap through a closed carton?

A closed tuck-end carton holds most of the fragrance in, which protects the scent but hides it from the shopper. If you want the scent to sell the soap, ask for a die-cut window or a small pattern of vent holes in the front panel; both can be cut without weakening the box.

Will oil from the soap stain the box?

Soaps with a high oil content or heavy fragrance can mark plain board over time. We can add a barrier coating on the inside face, which slows oil moving into the board and keeps the outside print clean.

Where does the INCI list go on a 90 x 60 mm soap box?

On a standard bar box the back panel is 90 x 60 mm, which takes a full INCI list at a legible size, with the weight and responsible person on one end flap. We set the text on the proof at final size so you can check every line reads before printing.

I make eight scents. Do I need eight different soap boxes?

Not necessarily. Many soap makers print one carton with a blank scent panel and add a small printed label per scent, or keep one layout and change only an ink colour. We can run several colour versions in one order so each scent still looks distinct on the shelf.

Is kraft or white board better for natural soaps?

Kraft suits a natural, handmade look and hides marks from the packing bench, while white board shows bright colours and photographs more accurately. Both can take a barrier coating on the inside face if your bars are oil-rich.

Do the soap cartons come flat or made up?

They arrive flat and pre-creased in bundles, so a box of 500 takes up little room under a market table. A tuck-end soap carton folds and closes without glue or tape, which keeps packing a batch of bars quick.

Can you make a box that holds two or three bars?

Yes. We can make a longer carton for bars side by side or stacked, or a sleeve and tray set for a gift pack. Tell us how you want the bars arranged and if a card divider is needed between them.

How soon could I have bar soap boxes for a new launch?

After you approve the free design proof, production takes 4 to 7 working days and free tracked UK mainland delivery takes 2 to 3 working days. Send your bar sizes early and we can have your custom quote back within one working day.

A few of my soap boxes arrived crushed in the parcel. What now?

Send us a photo of the damaged cartons within 10 days of delivery. We reprint the affected boxes or refund them, whichever you prefer, and you keep the usable ones.

What does a bar soap box cost?

Simple printed soap cartons start from £0.25 each, with the final price depending on size, board, finish and quantity. We send a custom quote by email so you can compare options before ordering.
