Why Booksellers Switch From Envelopes
A paperback in a padded envelope usually survives the trip, but hardbacks, box sets and vinyl records are another matter. Corners hit sorting machines and the edges of other parcels, and a dented corner on a collectable first edition or a split record sleeve is enough to trigger a return. A rigid media mailer spreads those knocks across the whole box and keeps the item square.
There is a speed benefit too. Media mailers fold from a single flat piece with no tape needed on most styles. Staff drop the book in, fold the end flaps and close the lid, and the parcel is ready for a label. For a small bookshop handling a steady flow of online orders, that saved minute per parcel adds up quickly over a week.
Finally, the box itself is a branding opportunity. A printed lid or a simple logo on the inside flap tells the buyer exactly who sent it, which matters for independent shops competing with the big online sellers. Shops posting several books at a time move to our book shipping boxes for bigger orders.
Sizing Media Mailer Boxes for Royal Mail Bands
Postage cost is driven by size and weight bands, so the box should be planned around them. A Large Letter must be no more than 353 x 250 x 25 mm and weigh up to 750 g, which suits a single paperback or a slim graphic novel in a shallow box. Anything thicker moves into the small parcel band, which allows up to 450 x 350 x 160 mm, and covers most hardbacks, boxed games and record sets.
Measure the item at its largest points, including any dust jacket, then add about 3–5 mm on length and width and a little on depth. That clearance lets the item slide in without forcing, but stops it shifting about. For Large Letter boxes, check the outer depth including the board thickness, because the board itself can push a 23 mm book over the 25 mm limit if the box is badly planned.
If your stock varies, pick two or three standard sizes that cover most orders rather than a box for every title. Many booksellers run with one Large Letter box, one hardback box and one deeper box for bundles. Our method for measuring a book for a mailer explains the depth allowance.
- Large Letter box: one paperback or a slim hardback, under 25 mm outer depth
- Hardback box: single hardbacks and coffee-table books
- Vinyl LP box: a 12 inch record in its sleeve, with corner protection
- Bundle box: two or three books or a box set

Board Choice for Books, Records and Games
E-flute corrugated board around 1.5 mm thick is the usual starting point. It is thin enough to keep Large Letter boxes under the depth limit while still giving genuine corner strength. B-flute, around 3 mm, is better for heavy hardbacks, art books and vinyl, where the extra cushioning in the walls is worth the slight increase in size.
Kraft board gives a classic bookshop look and hides the scuffs of transit well. White board shows full-colour print more brightly and makes a strong first impression for publishers and subscription book clubs.
Weight matters as much as size for Large Letter post. A paperback of around 350 g plus an E-flute box of roughly 60–80 g leaves comfortable headroom under the 750 g limit, but a heavy hardback may tip a parcel into the next band. Weighing a packed sample before you commit to a size saves surprises at the post office counter.
Print That Suits a Book Brand
Many independent sellers keep the outside simple: a one-colour logo on the lid, perhaps a short line along the side. The inside of the lid is where personality can come through, with a pattern, a favourite quote or a thank-you message that the reader sees as the box opens.
Publishers and book clubs often go further, printing the outside in full colour to match a monthly theme. If the box is posted naked with a label, leave a clear flat area on the lid around 100 x 150 mm for the shipping label so it does not cover your artwork.
Record shops sometimes print a fragile and this way up mark discreetly along one side, which helps couriers handle the box with care without spoiling the design. Our one colour print on kraft guide shows how a logo sits on brown board.
Closing Styles and Extras
The classic roll-end tuck-front style closes with a tuck flap and two side dust flaps, giving a neat box that opens like a lid. A crash-lock wrap style folds around the book from a flat base, which suits varying book thicknesses because the wrap adjusts slightly. Tear strips make opening easy, and self-seal adhesive strips speed up packing and show if a box has been tampered with.
For return-friendly boxes, add a second adhesive strip so customers can reseal the box if they need to send a book back. Thumb holes on the side help readers lift a heavy art book out without damaging the dust jacket.
For collectors' items, a thin card insert or a sheet of tissue around the book adds a final layer of care. It costs very little and shows buyers of rare or signed editions that their purchase was packed by someone who understands its value.
Books, Records, Games and More
Independent bookshops and second-hand book sellers are the core buyers, along with record shops posting vinyl and CDs, games shops sending board games and video games, and comic shops shipping graphic novels. Self-published authors use them for signed copies, and subscription book clubs use printed versions for their monthly box.
Universities and training providers post course books in them, and museums and galleries use them for exhibition catalogues sold online.
Charity shops selling donated books online have found media mailers particularly useful, because one or two standard sizes cover most of the stock that comes through the door, and volunteers can pack quickly without measuring every title. Single issues and graded comics use the slimmer comic book boxes for single issues.
Check the Postage Band Before You Fix the Depth
Media mailers are sized to postage bands as much as to books, so before anything else, measure the thickest item you post regularly and check it against the band you want to hit; a few millimetres of depth can move a parcel from one band to the next and cost more than the box saves. Tell us the item dimensions, the band, and whether one box should cover both paperbacks and hardbacks with a card insert taking up the difference. Choose kraft or white board by your branding and decide whether the box needs a tear strip and a second adhesive strip for returns. Artwork is a logo and any message inside the lid, sent as vector files, and the free proof shows the dieline with the print layout. A custom quote comes by email within one working day, minimums are quoted per job, and boxes are produced in 4–7 working days after approval, delivered flat with free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses. Boxes closed with a tuck rather than adhesive are our tuck top mailers without adhesive.

Media Mailer Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering media mailer boxes.
Can a media mailer box post as a Large Letter?
Yes, if the outer size stays within 353 x 250 x 25 mm and the parcel weighs up to 750 g. We use thin E-flute board and measure the outer depth so the box clears the slot.
How much space should I leave around a book?
About 3–5 mm on length and width and a little on depth is enough. More than that lets the book slide and knock its corners.
Will the box protect a vinyl record?
A flat LP mailer in B-flute board with corner protection keeps a 12 inch record rigid. Posting the record outside its inner sleeve avoids seam splits.
Do I need to tape these boxes?
Most tuck-front and crash-lock styles stay closed without tape. A self-seal adhesive strip adds security and a tamper-evident close.
Can customers reuse the box to return a book?
Yes, add a second adhesive strip and a tear strip, and the customer can open the box cleanly and reseal it for a return. Print a short returns note inside the lid so they know what the second strip is for. It adds a little to the cost per box.
Where should I put the shipping label?
Leave a flat area of about 100 x 150 mm on the lid clear of artwork. We mark it on the proof.
Can one box size fit several book formats?
A crash-lock wrap style adapts a little to different thicknesses. Most sellers settle on two or three sizes to cover their stock.
Is kraft or white board better for a bookshop?
Kraft looks classic and hides transit marks. White shows full-colour print brightly and suits publishers and book clubs.
Can you print a message inside the lid?
Yes, inside print is one of the most popular options. A thank-you or a favourite line greets the reader when the box opens.
Can one mailer cover both paperbacks and hardbacks?
Not neatly in most cases, because a hardback box lets a paperback slide around. Most sellers keep a Large Letter box for paperbacks and a deeper box for hardbacks and bundles.
What if a bundle of media mailers arrives crushed?
Photograph the crushed boxes and the bundle and send the photos within 10 days of delivery, and we reprint or refund the affected boxes. Flat-packed mailers are bundled in tens or twenties, so damage is usually limited to one bundle. Check the outer bundles on arrival.
