Custom Holster Soap Boxes
Custom holster soap boxes wrap round the middle of a bar like a belt, so the label does its job while the soap itself stays on show. They suit makers whose bars sell on looks and scent, and they pack flat until the moment you slide a bar in.

What a Holster Box Actually Is
A holster is a printed band of card folded into an open-ended tube, sometimes with a shaped cut-out on the front panel. The bar slides in from one side and the card holds it by friction. Both ends stay open, so a shopper can see the swirls, the botanicals pressed into the top and the edge of the bar without opening anything.
That openness is the reason soap makers choose it. A closed carton hides the very thing that sells a handmade bar, and shrink wrap can make a natural product look like a supermarket multipack. A holster sits between the two: it carries your brand, ingredients and weight, but lets the soap breathe and be smelled on the shelf.
Because there are no tuck flaps or glued bases, holsters also use less board than a full box and are quick to fill. Most makers can sleeve a batch by hand in an afternoon, straight from the curing rack. Bars sold wrapped in paper first use our printed soap wrapping paper under the band.
Sizing the Band to Your Bars
The fit matters more on a holster than on any closed box, because nothing else keeps the bar in place. Measure a cured bar, not a fresh one, as bars shrink slightly as they lose water. Give us the length, width and depth of a typical cured bar and we size the inside of the band a millimetre or so larger on the width and depth so the bar slides in firmly without scuffing.
Band width is a design choice. A narrow band leaves most of the bar visible and suits textured or layered soaps. A wider band gives more room for ingredients, the weight and your story, which helps if you sell through gift shops where the bar has to explain itself without you there.
If your bars vary by a few millimetres because they are hand-cut, tell us the range. We can size for the larger end and suggest a slightly softer board so the band flexes rather than splits on a chunky bar.
A quick way to test fit is to print the dieline we send at full size, cut it out from thin card and wrap it round a bar. It takes ten minutes and saves guessing. Our guide to measuring products for packaging explains the friction allowance.

Board, Print and Finish Choices for Holster Soap Boxes
Most holsters are made from folding boxboard, either white-lined for bright colour or natural kraft for a rustic, handmade look. Kraft takes dark inks well and hides the odd oily fingerprint from handling, while white board gives cleaner reds, pinks and pastels.
Full colour print covers the outside of the band. If you want a simple pattern, ingredients or a thank-you line inside, we can print the reverse too. Spot colours are worth considering if your brand relies on one exact shade across labels and boxes.
- Matt lamination for a soft, modern feel that resists scuffing
- Uncoated kraft for an earthy look with a slightly porous surface
- Gold or silver foil on the brand name for gift ranges
- Embossing on the logo so the band feels crafted
- Spot gloss on an illustration to lift it off a matt background
Window Cut-Outs and Shaped Edges
A holster can be a plain band, or the front can carry a die-cut window in a circle, oval, leaf or any outline that suits your brand. A window on top of an open-ended sleeve lets the bar's surface show as well as its edges, which works well for soaps with flowers, oats or clay patterns pressed into the face.
Shaped top edges are another option. A scalloped or curved edge on the band looks hand-finished and softens the straight lines of a rectangular bar. We draw any cut-out onto the dieline and include it in the free proof, so you can check where it falls against your artwork before anything is printed. Shaped cut-outs on a full closed carton are shown on our die-cut soap boxes page.
Who Uses Holster Packaging
Holsters are popular with small soap studios selling at markets and online, where customers like to pick up and smell a bar. Boutique hotels and spas use them for guest bars printed with their own name. Gift shops and farm shops prefer them because a row of bars in holsters looks tidy on a shelf without hiding the product.
They also suit shampoo bars, solid conditioners and body butter bars that hold their shape. If a product is soft or sticky, a closed box or wrap will usually serve it better, and we will tell you so at the quote stage. Round and oval bars that will not sit in a band go in bar soap boxes for shaped bars.
Displaying and Storing Sleeved Bars
Think about how the bars will be shown before you settle the artwork. On a market table, holsters are usually laid flat in rows, so the top face of the band carries the brand name and the scent. In a gift shop they are often stood on end in a crate or a tray, which means the narrow side panel is what a browser reads first. Printing the scent name on the side as well as the front costs nothing extra and makes a standing display far easier to shop.
Storage needs a little care too. Open ends let fragrance escape, which is lovely in a shop but means bars kept for months in a warm room will fade faster than boxed ones. Keep stock in a cool, dark place and sleeve bars in batches rather than all at once if you sell slowly.
If you post bars to customers, a holster alone will not protect them in the mail. Pop the sleeved bar into a small mailer or wrap it in tissue first, so the corners of the band stay crisp when it arrives. Upload the artwork through the free proof request and we will show the scent name on the side panel.
Measure a Cured Bar and Wrap a Paper Band Round It
A holster holds a bar by friction alone, so the fit is everything: measure a bar that has finished curing, not one fresh from the mould, and give us the length, width and depth with the range if they are hand-cut. Then print the dieline we send at full size, cut it from thin card and wrap it round a bar; ten minutes with scissors shows if the band width and window suit the bar. Put the ingredients on the back panel, away from the open ends.
Send the bar sizes, the number of scents and roughly how many of each, and a custom quote comes back by email within one working day, with holsters from £0.25 and minimums quoted per job. The free proof shows the flat band and the folded view with any window. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval and the flat bundles arrive by free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses in 2–3 working days. Misprinted or damaged bands reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Makers who sell softer bars alongside usually add closed boxes for handmade soap for those.

Holster Soap Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering holster soap boxes.
Will the soap fall out of an open-ended holster?
Not if the band is sized to a cured bar. We make the inside just slightly larger than the bar so friction holds it in place, and you can still slide it out easily to smell or use it.
Should I measure my soap fresh or cured?
Always measure a cured bar. Soap shrinks a little as it dries, so a band sized to a fresh bar can end up loose by the time it reaches a shelf.
Can I use one holster design for several scents?
Yes. A common approach is one shared design with a coloured scent panel or a small printed name that changes per fragrance. This keeps costs lower than fully separate designs.
Is kraft or white board better for soap holsters?
Kraft suits natural and rustic brands and hides handling marks well. White board gives brighter, truer colours, so it suits playful or pastel branding.
Can the holster have a window as well as open ends?
Yes, a die-cut window on the front panel can be any shape you like. It shows the face of the bar as well as its edges, which helps soaps with pressed flowers or textured tops.
Will oils from the soap mark the card?
Some oily or high-butter bars can mark uncoated board over time. A matt or gloss lamination on the outside reduces this, and we can suggest it if your recipe is rich in oils.
Will the ingredients list still be readable on a 25 mm wide band?
On a narrow band the back panel is small, so the list is set at about 6 point in a single column, which stays readable but leaves no room for a story. If your recipe has a long botanical list, go to a wider band or move the story to a separate card. Keep the panel away from the open ends and any window.
Can holsters work for shampoo bars and solid conditioners?
Yes, as long as the bar is firm and holds its shape. Soft or tacky bars are better in a closed box or a wrap, and we will flag that when quoting.
Do I get to check the window position before printing?
Yes. The free design proof shows the flat dieline with your artwork and the window in place, so you can move text or images before production starts.
How soon could I have holsters for a market stall?
After you approve the proof, production takes 4 to 7 working days and tracked delivery to the UK mainland takes 2 to 3 working days. Plan around that window and allow a day for proof changes.
Can I add a hang tab for peg displays?
Yes, we can extend the top of the band into a tab with a euro slot or round hole. It is useful in gift shops that sell from pegboard walls.
