Custom Die-Cut Soap Boxes
Custom die-cut soap boxes have a shape punched out of the front or sides, so shoppers can see the bar, touch it and smell it before they buy. We cut the window to suit your brand, whether that is a simple oval, a leaf, a honeycomb or your own outline, and print the rest of the carton in your colours.

A Window That Does More Than Show the Bar
Scent sells soap. A customer browsing a market stall or a gift shop shelf will almost always lift a bar to their nose before deciding, and a fully closed carton gets in the way of that. A die-cut opening solves it neatly. The fragrance drifts through the gap, the colours and swirls of the soap are on show, and the box still protects the edges and carries all the information you need to print.
Unlike a window patched with film, an open die-cut also lets cold process bars breathe a little while they sit on the shelf. Many makers prefer that to sealing a freshly cured bar behind plastic. If you do want a barrier, for example on a glycerine soap that can sweat, a clear film panel can be glued behind the cut-out instead. Makers who want a full closed box with a small film window instead use the artisan soap boxes with film windows.
Choosing a Cut-Out Shape for Your Brand
The shape of the window is the easiest way to make a plain soap box feel like it belongs to you. Botanical brands often go for a leaf or flower. A lavender soap might sit behind a sprig outline, while a goat milk range could use a soft rounded arch. Geometric cuts such as hexagons, circles and stripes suit a more modern look. Some makers use their logo mark itself as the opening, which works well if the mark is bold and has no fine details.
There are practical limits to keep in mind. Very thin bridges of board between cut-outs can tear, and a window that is too large weakens the panel so the box squashes when stacked. As a rule of thumb, keep a margin of board around the opening and avoid points narrower than a few millimetres. We check every shape on the proof and suggest tweaks if anything looks fragile. Shapes that need a thicker board to stay rigid are discussed in the board and card types guide.
- Simple ovals and circles for a classic, gentle look
- Leaves, flowers and sprigs for botanical ranges
- Hexagons and honeycomb patterns for honey and oat soaps
- Logo-shaped openings when the mark is bold and simple
- Side cut-outs that leave the front panel clear for branding

Board Options for Die-Cut Soap Boxes
Most soap boxes are made from folding boxboard, a smooth, stiff card that prints sharply and folds cleanly. A thickness of around 350 gsm suits standard bars, while heavier soaps or boxes holding two bars benefit from something a little thicker. White board gives the brightest print and suits pastel and vivid designs.
Kraft board has a natural brown surface that many handmade soap brands love because it matches their simple, honest feel. Print on kraft looks softer and slightly muted, so dark inks and bold line work hold up best. The kraft and white boards are shown side by side on the board and finish page.
Sizing a Box Around a Soap Bar
Measure the cured bar, not the mould. Soap shrinks slightly as it cures, and a box sized to the fresh bar can leave it rattling around. Take the length, width and height at their largest points, then add a small allowance of around two millimetres on each dimension so the bar slides in without forcing the corners.
If your bars vary a little from batch to batch, as hand-cut soap often does, size for your largest typical bar. A snug fit matters more with a die-cut box than a closed one because a loose bar will slide away from the window, leaving shoppers looking at an empty gap. Round and oval bars usually go into a square-section box with the cut-out centred on the face. Our guide to measuring a product for a box covers hand-cut bars that vary.
Print, Finish and Ingredient Panels
A die-cut box has less printable surface on the front, so plan the artwork around the opening. Keep your brand name and product name above or below the window rather than wrapped around it, and move ingredients, weight and any allergen information to the back and side panels where there is room for a clear, readable layout.
For finishes, matt lamination gives a soft, velvety touch that suits luxury soaps. Gloss makes colours pop on brighter ranges. Spot UV can pick out a logo or a pattern, and foil stamping in gold, silver or copper adds a premium detail without needing full colour print. On kraft board, a single colour of ink with a foil highlight is often all a design needs.
Who Orders These and How They Use Them
Small batch soap makers selling at craft fairs and online are the most common buyers, because a die-cut box lets them present a handmade product properly without hiding it. Gift shops and spa boutiques like them for retail displays where customers browse by scent. Hotels and guest houses order smaller versions for room amenities, and wedding planners sometimes use mini die-cut boxes for soap favours.
Brands that sell several fragrances often keep one box structure and change only the print or the window shape for each scent. That keeps cutting costs down and makes it easy to tell varieties apart on a shelf.
A good trick for a mixed range is to colour-code the window edge or the panel right around it. A green surround for mint, purple for lavender and amber for honey lets a customer find their favourite at a glance, even from a few steps back. Because the die-cut shape stays the same, you can add a new scent later simply by sending fresh artwork, with no new cutting forme needed. Makers who sell wholesale to shops also find that a consistent box size makes it easier for retailers to plan shelf space, since every scent takes up exactly the same footprint on the display. Moulded bars in regular shapes are covered under bar soap boxes for moulded soaps.
Sketch the Cut-Out on a Bar-Sized Rectangle
The cut-out is what makes this box, so settle it before anything else. Draw a rectangle the size of your bar's face, sketch the shape you want inside it, and check two things: that at least 8 mm of board remains on every side of the opening, and that no point of the shape is narrower than 4 mm, because thin points tear at the packing bench. A leaf or an oval is easy; a detailed logo outline may need simplifying.
Send the bar size, the sketch or a description, and your artwork if it is ready, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day, with prices from £0.25 a box and minimums quoted for the job. The free proof shows the flat box with the die-cut window marked against your design. Production takes 4 to 7 working days from approval and free tracked UK mainland delivery follows in 2 to 3 working days; boxes that arrive misprinted or crushed are reprinted or refunded if reported within 10 days. Bars that need only a band rather than a box are covered on the printed soap sleeves with open ends page.

Die-Cut Soap Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering Die-Cut soap boxes.
Can I choose any shape for the die-cut window?
Almost any shape works as long as it has no very thin bridges or tiny points that could tear. Leaves, circles, hexagons and bold logo outlines all cut cleanly. We check your shape on the proof and suggest small changes if a section looks weak.
Can shoppers smell a cold process bar through a die-cut window?
Yes, and that is the main reason makers choose an open cut-out over a film window. The opening lets the fragrance escape so people can smell the bar without unwrapping it; a film panel glued behind the window keeps dust out but makes the scent much weaker.
Is a film window better for glycerine soap?
Often it is, because melt and pour soaps can sweat when they meet humid air. A clear film glued behind the cut-out protects the surface while still showing the colour. Cold process bars usually do fine with an open window.
How do I measure my soap for the box?
Measure a fully cured bar at its widest length, width and height, then add about two millimetres to each. If your bars vary, size the box for your largest typical bar so none of them get squeezed.
Does the cut-out weaken the box?
A large opening does reduce the stiffness of that panel, so we keep a sensible margin of board around it. For stacked displays or heavier bars we may suggest a slightly thicker card. The proof shows exactly how much board remains.
Where should ingredients go on a die-cut soap box?
Put them on the back or side panels where there is unbroken space. The front works best for your brand name, scent and the window itself. Keep the text size readable rather than squeezing it next to the opening.
Can I use one box design for several fragrances?
Yes, and it is a smart way to keep costs down. You can keep the same structure and window and change only the print colours or scent name for each variety. Ask for a custom quote covering all versions together.
Does kraft board work with a die-cut window?
It works very well and suits natural and handmade ranges. Kraft cuts cleanly and gives a warm look around the opening. Bold, dark inks and foil read best on its brown surface.
Can I get mini boxes for guest soaps?
Yes, we make small die-cut boxes for guest soaps used by hotels, salons and wedding favours. Send us the size of the mini bar and we will match the box to it.
What does it cost to order die-cut soap boxes?
Prices start from £0.25 a box, with the final figure depending on size, board, print and finish. We send a custom quote by email within one working day of your enquiry.
What if some boxes arrive with print faults?
Tell us within 10 days with a photo and we will reprint the affected boxes or refund them. You also approve a free proof first, which catches most problems before production starts.
