A Box Shaped for a Necktie, and Who Needs One
A tie is a long, narrow piece of silk or wool that creases if it is crushed and loses its shape if it is rolled too tightly. Shops and makers usually present a tie folded once or twice into a neat rectangle, or loosely coiled, and the box needs to suit whichever method you use. That is why tie boxes are so distinctive: longer and slimmer than a shirt box, and shallow enough that the tie cannot shift about.
The box does more than protect. A tie is often bought as a gift for a birthday, a new job, a graduation or a wedding party, and the packaging is the first part the recipient sees. A plain cardboard sleeve undersells a silk tie that cost real money; a well-made box with a lift-off lid and a satin bed makes the same tie feel considered.
For tailors and menswear brands, a branded tie box also travels. It goes home in a bag, gets opened at a dinner table and is often kept for storing cufflinks or the tie itself, so your name stays in the wardrobe.
Independent menswear shops and tailors use tie boxes for in-store gifts and as part of a suit purchase. Online tie brands use folding or slim rigid boxes that fit inside a mailer. Corporate gift buyers order branded ties in boxes for staff awards, client gifts and company events, often with the company logo on the lid rather than the tie maker's.
Wedding planners and stationers order sets of tie boxes for groomsmen, sometimes printed with names and the date. School and club shops use them for formal ties sold as part of a uniform or as leavers' gifts, where a box makes a simple purchase feel like a keepsake.
Charity shops and vintage sellers also order small runs for their best donated silk ties, finding that a simple branded box lets a pre-loved tie sell as a gift rather than a bargain-bin find.
Rigid, Folding and Window Styles
Different shops need different levels of presentation, and the style you choose sets the price and the feel.
For wedding orders, a matching set of boxes in one style, with each groomsman's name on the lid, is a popular approach.
- Rigid lift-off lid: thick greyboard wrapped in printed or textured paper, the classic gift option.
- Rigid magnetic flap: opens like a book with a hidden magnet, ideal for premium silk ties and sets.
- Folding tuck-end box: lighter and lower cost, good for high-volume retail and online orders.
- Window lid: a clear panel shows the pattern so shoppers can choose without opening the box.
- Slide drawer: a tray slides out of an outer sleeve, a neat choice for ties with matching pocket squares.

Inserts That Hold a Tie in Place
The insert decides how the tie looks when the lid comes off. A simple card platform with a slit or tab holds a folded tie flat and centred. A satin-covered pad gives a soft, glossy bed that suits silk, and a foam insert with a cut channel holds a coiled tie in a perfect spiral.
If you sell sets, the insert can be divided. A long compartment for the tie and smaller wells for cufflinks, a tie clip or a folded pocket square turn one purchase into a gift set without needing a bigger box. Each compartment is cut to the item, so nothing slides into the next space.
Tell us how you fold your ties and what else goes in the box, ideally with a photo, and we will suggest an insert that keeps everything neat from the shop to the moment of opening.
Printing and Finishing Custom Tie Boxes
Menswear packaging tends to look best when it is restrained. A dark wrap paper in navy, charcoal, black or deep green with a foil logo on the lid is a reliable choice. Textured papers with a linen or leather-look grain add a tactile quality that suits tailoring brands, and a soft-touch laminate gives printed colours a velvety feel.
If you prefer a lighter look, white or cream board with a single colour logo and a coloured ribbon works for wedding and gift ranges. Inside lid printing, such as a short line about the fabric or the maker, gives the customer something to read when the box is opened.
Foil colours on dark board, embossed logos and spot gloss all show up clearly on the proof, so you can see the effect before you approve. The same finishes carry across to bow tie boxes in a squarer format for a matching pair.
Making the Opening Feel Special
With a tie, the reveal is quick: the lid comes off and the tie is either there looking perfect or it is not. Small touches make that moment count. A sheet of tissue folded over the tie and closed with a branded sticker adds a second, slower reveal. A ribbon pull under the insert lets the recipient lift the tie out without fumbling at the edges of the box.
A small printed card tucked into the lid can carry fabric details, care advice or a personal message for a gift order. For tailors, a card explaining how the tie was cut and finished is a quiet way of showing craftsmanship. For wedding orders, a card with the date and the couple's names turns the box into a memento the groomsmen are likely to keep.
If you sell online, consider printing the inside of the lid rather than the outside of a mailer. The outer box gets thrown away; the tie box goes into a drawer.
Sizing a Box for Folded or Coiled Ties
Fold a tie the way you will sell it and measure the length, width and thickness of the folded shape. Most ties folded into thirds sit comfortably in a box around 300 mm long, while a tie folded in half needs a longer box. Coiled ties suit a shorter, deeper box.
Wool and knitted ties are thicker than silk, so allow more depth. Skinny ties need a narrower insert to stop them sliding sideways. If you sell several widths, we can keep one outer box and vary only the insert, which keeps your packaging consistent across the range.
Bow ties, cravats and ascots are a different shape again. A square or near-square box suits them better than a long tie box, so if you sell a mixed range we can design a family of boxes that share one wrap paper and logo position but differ in proportion.

Tie Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering tie boxes.
Will the tie crease inside the box?
Not if the box is sized to the folded tie. We set the depth so the lid sits just above the tie without pressing it, and an insert keeps it from sliding.
Can the box hold cufflinks as well?
Yes, a divided insert can hold a tie alongside cufflinks, a tie clip or a pocket square. Each item gets its own shaped space.
What is the best style for a premium silk tie?
A rigid magnetic flap or lift-off lid box with a satin pad gives the most luxurious feel. Add a foil logo on the lid for a finished look.
Can you print groomsmen's names on wedding tie boxes?
Yes, we can print each name on the lid or on a small panel inside. Send us the list and we will show the names on the proof.
Do coiled ties need a different box?
They do. A coiled tie suits a shorter, deeper box with a foam or card insert that holds the spiral in place.
Are folding tie boxes strong enough for posting?
They are strong enough for retail, but for posting we recommend placing the boxed tie inside a slim mailer. That keeps the printed box clean on arrival.
Can I see the tie through the box?
A window lid with a clear panel lets customers see the pattern while the tie stays protected. It is useful for retail displays.
Can rigid tie boxes be shipped flat?
Classic rigid boxes arrive made up. If storage is tight, ask about a collapsible rigid style that folds flat and pops up with magnets.
What colours work best for menswear boxes?
Dark colours such as navy, charcoal, black and forest green with a gold or silver foil logo are the most popular. Textured papers add depth without extra print.
Can the same box fit skinny and standard ties?
Yes, by keeping the outer box the same and changing the insert width. That keeps your packaging consistent across tie widths.
What if the foil logo is wrong on delivery?
Report any misprint within 10 days with a photo, and we will reprint the affected boxes or refund them.
