A Box That Matches the Craft Inside

A hand-stitched bifold can take a leatherworker many hours, from cutting and skiving to edge burnishing. Sliding it into a thin postal envelope undersells all of that work. A well-made wallet box, with a firm lid, a snug bed and a quiet logo, tells the buyer before they even touch the leather that the piece is worth keeping for a long time.

Wallets are also one of the most popular gifts for birthdays, graduations and anniversaries. Many are bought by someone other than the end user, which means the box is part of the gift. A buyer comparing two similar wallets online will often choose the one that arrives looking ready to hand over, with no need for extra wrapping.

For brands selling through department stores or boutiques, a consistent box also keeps a range looking tidy on the shelf and protects the leather from fingerprints and scuffs while shoppers browse. Leather goods makers who also stitch glasses cases use the same wrap on their glasses boxes with a fitted insert.

Box Styles for Wallets and Card Holders

The two-piece lift-off lid is the traditional choice and suits most bifolds and trifolds. A drawer box, where a tray slides out of an outer sleeve, gives a satisfying reveal and works well for slim card holders and money clips. A magnetic flap box opens like a book and is often used for premium wallets, matching sets and anything sold at a higher price. For brands shipping in larger volumes, a printed folding carton with a card insert keeps costs down while still looking neat.

If you post wallets directly to customers, the box will travel inside an outer mailer. In that case a slightly lighter rigid board or a well-made folding carton is often enough, because the mailer takes the knocks. Boutiques that display boxes on open shelves, by contrast, benefit from the firmest board and a wrap that resists finger marks.

Card holders and coin purses can share a drawer box size if their footprints are close. One box, two inserts, keeps your stock simpler and the run larger.

Inserts That Hold the Leather Without Marking It

Leather can take an impression if it is pressed hard against a ridge for weeks, so the insert should support the wallet evenly. A shallow foam bed covered in velvet or a smooth card platform with a cut-out recess both work well. For long wallets and travel wallets, a recess a few millimetres deeper than the wallet stops the lid pressing down on the surface.

Matching sets, such as a wallet with a key fob or belt, need a multi-pocket insert. Send us the pieces, or their measurements and photos, and we will plan the layout so every item sits flat and nothing rubs against anything else in transit. The clearances around each pocket follow our guide to measuring a product for packaging.

Materials, Colours and Branding Details

Rigid boxes are made from thick greyboard wrapped in paper. Black, chocolate brown, tan, navy and deep green wraps sit naturally beside leather. Textured papers with a linen or leather-grain feel add depth, and a kraft wrap suits workshop brands with a rugged, handmade identity. Inside, a contrasting colour, such as a tan interior in a black box, gives a small surprise when the lid comes off.

For printed folding cartons, white or kraft folding boxboard takes full colour print and can be matt laminated to resist scuffs during shipping.

Interior colour is worth thinking about. A tan or cognac wallet in a tan-lined box can look washed out; a black or deep blue lining makes the leather glow. If your range comes in several leather colours, a neutral grey or black interior suits them all.

Some makers like to include a small cotton dust bag inside the box for long-term storage. If you do, allow a few extra millimetres in the depth so the lid still closes without squeezing.

Leather brands usually prefer restraint. A foil logo in gold, silver, copper or black on the lid is the most popular finish, and blind debossing, where the logo is pressed into the board without colour, echoes the stamped mark many makers put on the leather itself. A printed message inside the lid, such as care advice or a short note from the maker, is seen at exactly the right moment.

Small details make a difference: a ribbon pull on drawer boxes, a fabric hinge on magnetic boxes, and a belly band around the outside for a limited or gift edition without reprinting the box.

Keep the logo modest in size. On a slim wallet box, a mark around 30 to 40 mm wide usually looks balanced; anything larger can feel loud next to fine leather.

Measuring Wallets for a Proper Fit

Measure the wallet closed, at its thickest point, including any card already inside if you will ship it that way. Bifolds vary a lot in thickness depending on the number of card slots and the weight of leather. Add a few millimetres all round for the insert, and tell us whether the wallet is sent empty or with a sample card.

If you sell several sizes, from a slim card sleeve to a long continental purse, it can be more economical to choose two box sizes with different inserts than a separate box for each item.

Weigh up whether to show the wallet straight away. Some brands wrap it in tissue paper on top of the insert for a slower reveal, which means leaving a little extra depth above the leather.

Wallet Boxes for Corporate and Wedding Gifts

Wallets and card holders are common corporate gifts for clients and long-serving staff, and they are a favourite groomsmen present. In both cases, presentation matters as much as the leather. Corporate buyers often want their own company logo on the lid alongside, or instead of, the maker's mark, and we can foil both if needed. A short message inside the lid works well for thanking a client or marking a work anniversary.

For weddings, a box in the wedding colours with each groomsman's name on a small printed card tucked under the wallet adds a personal touch without printing each box separately. Ordering a few spare boxes covers last-minute additions to the party.

Where wallets are personalised with initials, allow time for the leather stamping before the boxes are needed, and confirm the box depth with a stamped sample, since some heat-embossing slightly changes the thickness. Groomsmen sets that pair a wallet with braces are boxed as one in the braces boxes with a two-pocket insert.

Measure the Wallet Closed and Say Whether It Ships Filled

A wallet box is cut to the wallet at its thickest, which is a different figure for an empty bifold and one shipped with a card and a note inside, so decide how it goes out before measuring. Close the wallet, measure length and width, then press it gently and measure the thickness at the fold; add 5 mm to each. If you sell a card holder and a long wallet from the same workshop, send both sets of figures and ask whether one tray with two inserts is cheaper than two boxes. Choose the lid style by the shop: lift-off for a counter, drawer for a gift. Makers who also box a belt or tie keep the same wrap on their tie boxes in a matching wrap.

Send the logo as a vector for foil or deboss. Email the measurements, style, insert type, wrap and quantity, and a custom quote comes back within one working day, followed by a free design proof showing the insert. Boxes are made in 4 to 7 working days once approved and delivered free and tracked on the UK mainland in 2 to 3 days. Boxes that arrive crushed or scuffed are replaced or refunded when reported within 10 days.

Wallet Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering wallet boxes.

Which box style suits a bifold wallet best?

A lift-off lid rigid box is the classic choice and fits most bifolds. A magnetic flap box suits premium ranges and gift sets.

Will the insert leave a mark on the leather?

We design inserts to support the wallet evenly, with a recess slightly deeper than the wallet so the lid does not press on it.

Can I fit a wallet and a key fob in one box?

Yes. We make multi-pocket inserts for matching sets. Send measurements or photos of each item and we plan the layout.

What finish matches a stamped leather logo?

Blind debossing presses your logo into the lid without ink, which echoes a stamp on leather. Foil in gold or copper is the other popular choice.

Can the inside of a wallet box lid carry leather care advice?

Yes. Many makers print care advice or a short note about the hide inside the lid, where it is read as the box opens. On a wrapped rigid box the inside print is a second lining paper, so ask for the price with and without it.

Do you make boxes for card holders as well?

Yes. Drawer boxes and slim lift-off boxes suit card holders and money clips well.

How do I measure a wallet for the box?

Measure it closed at its thickest point and say if you ship it empty or with a card inside. We add room for the insert.

Can I order a small number for a workshop?

Minimums are low and quoted per job, so small runs are welcome. Send your details for a custom quote within one working day.

Will wallet boxes arrive in time for groomsmen gifts?

Once the proof for your custom wallet boxes is approved, making them takes 4 to 7 working days, and free tracked UK mainland delivery follows in 2 to 3 working days.

Can I use a band for a gift edition?

Yes. A printed belly band around the box lets you create a gift edition without reprinting the main box.

What if some boxes arrive crushed?

Report it within 10 days with photos and we will reprint the damaged boxes or refund them.
