Custom Shirt Boxes With Collar Support
Custom shirt boxes keep a folded shirt exactly as it left the pressing table, collar standing and front placket straight. We make them long and shallow, with a lid that lifts away cleanly and an optional collar insert that stops the neck from collapsing.

A Box Shaped Around the Fold
A properly folded dress shirt is a rectangle roughly the width of a man's chest and a little longer than it is wide, with the collar sitting proud at one end. Most generic boxes are either too deep, so the shirt slides about, or too short, so the tail folds again and leaves a crease across the front. A shirt box is cut to the folded garment, with only a few millimetres to spare around the edges and just enough depth for the collar.
That close fit is what keeps a shirt looking new on arrival. The customer lifts the lid and sees a crisp front, a straight row of buttons and a collar holding its curve. For a tailor or a made-to-measure shirtmaker, that first look is part of the product. For a menswear shop, it is the difference between a shirt that goes straight into the wardrobe and one that has to be ironed before it can be worn. Brands that post shirts directly usually pair the box with the shirt mailer boxes for online orders.
Collar Inserts and Shirt Boards
The collar is the first thing to lose its shape. A curved card insert slipped behind the collar band holds it upright inside the box, and it can be printed with your logo so it reads as a finishing touch rather than packing. Some shops prefer a flat shirt board under the whole garment, which keeps the body rigid when the box is carried at an angle.
Both can be made from the same board as the box or from a lighter card to keep weight down. If you already fold shirts around plastic collar stays and tissue, tell us so we can allow the extra thickness when we size the box. A small cut-out in the lid or base for the collar is another option for deep spread collars.
- Curved collar inserts printed with your logo
- Full-length shirt boards to keep the body flat
- Allowance for tissue, stays and pins
- Optional belly band to hold the shirt in place

Lid Styles for Shirt Packaging
The classic shirt box is a two-piece base and lid, where the lid drops over the base with a shallow overlap. It feels like a gift, stacks neatly in a stockroom and can be closed with a ribbon or belly band for presentation. A full-depth lid that covers the base completely gives a heavier, more expensive feel and resists crushing in a bag.
Folding styles are useful where storage space is tight. A one-piece box with a hinged lid folds flat for storage and is assembled at the till in a few seconds. Corrugated versions of the same shape double as shipping boxes for online orders, although for heavy postal use a dedicated shirt mailer is the better choice. Lid styles across the range are compared in our guide to choosing a custom box style.
Board and Finish for Menswear Brands
Rigid shirt boxes are made from greyboard wrapped in printed or coloured paper. They are sturdy enough to keep and reuse, which is why many people store cufflinks, ties or old letters in a good shirt box for years. Folding shirt boxes use a stiff carton board that prints well and costs less per box, suiting shops that hand a box to every buyer.
Menswear packaging tends to look best when it is restrained. A dark navy, charcoal or deep green box with a single foil logo carries quiet confidence. A white box with a fine black logo feels clean and precise. Matt lamination gives a soft, velvety feel that suits wool and cotton; soft-touch lamination goes a step further and resists fingerprints. Spot gloss on the logo adds contrast without colour.
Think too about how the box will be stored before it reaches the customer. Rigid boxes arrive made up, so a shop ordering several hundred needs space for them to stand in stacks. Folding boxes arrive flat in cartons and take a fraction of the room, which is why busy shops and online brands often choose them even when they like the feel of rigid board.
Sizing for Dress Shirts, Casual Shirts and Tees
Dress shirts are usually folded to a standard width so they stack in a shop display, and the box follows that size. Casual shirts with button-down collars often need slightly more depth, and heavy flannel or linen shirts take more room again. T-shirts folded flat need less depth but often a wider footprint, especially oversized cuts.
If you sell several types, choose one long box for dress shirts and a second, slightly deeper one for casual wear and knitwear. A single size for everything usually means some shirts float and others are squashed. Send us a folded sample's length, width and height and we will suggest internal sizes for each.
For tees and polo shirts sold in bundles, such as a pack of three basics, plan the depth around the whole stack rather than a single garment. Cotton compresses a little in a closed box, but forcing a lid down on too many shirts leaves pressure marks across the front fold that customers notice straight away.
Using the Box as Part of the Sale
A shirt box is often bought as a gift, so think about the moment it is handed over. A sheet of branded tissue folded over the shirt, a small card tucked under the collar insert explaining fabric and care, or a printed message inside the lid all make the box feel considered. Tailors often print the customer's name or order details on a small label, which costs very little but feels personal.
Shops that offer gift wrapping can use a plain-lidded box with a printed belly band, swapping the band for different occasions without changing the box itself. That keeps stock simple while still letting the packaging change through the year. Knitwear sold alongside shirts uses the deeper apparel boxes with lift-off lids.
Press, Fold and Then Measure the Shirt
The measurement for a shirt box comes from the folded shirt, not the shirt size on the label. Press a shirt and fold it exactly as your shop does, with the collar standing and any board in place, then measure its length, width and height at the collar. A dress shirt folded on a 380 x 270 mm board sits best in a box 10 mm larger each way with 60 mm of depth; a heavy flannel needs 80 mm. Tell us the collar style too, as a cutaway needs a wider insert.
Send the folded size, the box style and your logo, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day, with folding shirt boxes from £0.25 and low minimums quoted per job. The free proof shows the lid layout, the insert print and the colour. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses follows in 2 to 3 working days; boxes that arrive marked or misprinted are reprinted or refunded if reported within 10 days. A simpler band around the shirt instead of a box is covered on the shirt sleeves and belly bands page.

Shirt Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering shirt boxes.
How deep should a shirt box be?
A pressed dress shirt with a collar insert usually needs around 60 mm of internal depth. Casual or heavier shirts need a little more, so measure a folded sample from the base to the top of the collar.
Do collar inserts come printed?
They can be. A small logo or a fabric note on the collar insert is a neat touch that customers notice when they lift the lid. Plain white or kraft inserts are also available.
Can one box size fit all my shirts?
It can, but usually at the cost of fit. Most shops are better served with one box for dress shirts and one deeper box for casual and knitwear, which keeps every garment snug.
Rigid or folding shirt boxes, which is better?
Rigid boxes feel premium and are often kept by customers, which suits tailoring and gifts. Folding boxes store flat and cost less, which suits shops boxing every sale.
Can I post shirts in these boxes?
A corrugated shirt box can be posted, but a rigid presentation box should travel inside an outer carton. For regular online orders, our shirt mailer boxes are designed specifically for the post.
Can you print a customer name on each box?
We print the same design across the run, but we can supply matching blank labels or a printed panel where you add names in store. Many tailors handwrite or print a small label for each order.
What finish suits a dark menswear box?
Soft-touch lamination with a foil logo is a popular choice for navy, charcoal and black boxes. It feels smooth, resists fingerprints and lets the foil catch the light.
Is there room for a tie beside a folded dress shirt?
Yes, in the two-shirt depth with a card divider or a tie slot down one side. Tell us the tie width and whether it is folded or rolled, and the layout is drawn on the proof.
Will the lid crush the collar?
Not if the box depth is set from your folded sample. We size the lid to clear the top of the collar insert, and you can check the dimensions on the free proof.
Is there a minimum order for rigid shirt boxes?
Minimums are quoted per job and kept low, though rigid boxes usually have higher minimums than folding styles. Your custom quote will show the minimum for your chosen construction.
What if the foil logo is misaligned on arrival?
Report any print faults or damage within 10 days of delivery and we will reprint or refund the affected boxes.
