Packaging Built Around an Awkward Shape
Scissors are not a box-friendly object. The handles are wide, the blades narrow to a point, and the two halves pivot so the product can open in the packaging if nothing holds it. A generic rectangular carton leaves the scissors rattling around, which scratches the blades and lets the points pierce the board.
The answer is a box that treats the blades and the handles as two separate zones. An insert grips the blades closed and keeps the point away from the board, while the handles sit in a wider area that the customer can see or easily reach. With that structure in place, even fine shears arrive in the same state they left your workshop.
Styles for Different Kinds of Scissors
Professional hairdressing scissors are often sold in a two-piece box or a hinged case with a foam or card bed cut to their exact outline. These boxes are kept by stylists and reused for storage, so a rigid build and a soft-touch finish make sense.
Craft, school and kitchen scissors usually go on retail hooks. Here a card backer with a hang hole, or a slim carton with a window across the handles, lets the customer judge the size and grip without opening anything. Tailoring and dressmaking shears, which are long and heavy, suit a long tuck carton with a blade guard insert.

How to Size Custom Scissor Boxes
Lay the scissors closed on a flat surface and measure the overall length from the tip of the blade to the end of the longest handle. Then measure the widest point across the handles, which is usually wider than people guess, and the thickness at the pivot screw. Those three numbers give us the basic footprint.
If the scissors have a finger rest or tang that sticks out, include it in the width. For sets that combine thinning scissors and cutting scissors, or scissors with a comb or holster, lay the whole set out as you want it presented and photograph it from above with a ruler beside it. We will draw an insert around that arrangement and show it on the proof.
Allow a small margin around the outline so the insert holds the scissors firmly without pinching. Too tight, and customers struggle to lift them out; too loose, and the blades can open slightly in transit.
Materials and Blade Protection
Folding boxboard handles most craft and household scissors. For heavier shears, a thicker board or rigid greyboard keeps the box straight and stops the blade tip from pushing through the end panel. Foam inserts in black or white give a professional look and add cushioning, while card inserts are lighter and cheaper for retail lines.
A plastic blade guard is a good idea for any pointed scissors sold in a slim carton. The guard covers the tip, and the carton or insert holds the guard in place. If your scissors already come with a guard or leather sheath, tell us so the insert cut-out allows for its extra thickness.
Damp is another enemy of steel. A carton stored in a humid stockroom can hold moisture against the blades, so for high-carbon shears we suggest a coated board and, if you like, a small sachet slot in the insert for a desiccant pack. The same cut foam inserts for shears and blades can be ordered on their own for boxes you already have.
Print Ideas for Each Kind of Buyer
Our scissor boxes are ordered by salon suppliers and barbering brands, makers of tailoring and embroidery shears, craft and stationery companies, kitchen equipment sellers, and gardening brands packaging snips and pruners. Pet grooming brands use the same approach for grooming scissors, often in sets with combs.
Online sellers benefit too. A fitted box stops the scissors moving inside a mailer and makes a much better first impression than a pair wrapped in bubble film.
On professional shears the box is part of the product, so restraint usually works best: a dark board, a foil logo, the model name and a short line about the steel or edge type. Hairdressers compare brands closely and appreciate the specifications printed clearly on the back or underside.
Craft and school scissors call for more colour and quick information. Show the size, whether the scissors are left or right-handed, and the age group if relevant. A window lets the colour of the handles speak for itself, and a bold band across the front makes the range easy to spot on a busy stationery wall.
Posting Scissors Without Damage or Injury
Anything with a point needs a little extra thought before it goes into the post. A loose pair of scissors can work its way through a padded envelope, damage other items in a mixed parcel, or catch the hand of the person opening it. A fitted box removes that risk because the blades are held still and covered from every side.
For online orders we often suggest a printed carton inside a plain mailer box, or a mailer box with a cut insert that does both jobs at once. The second option suits subscription kits and salon starter packs, where scissors share a box with combs, capes or sectioning clips. Each item gets its own pocket, and the lid can carry a printed message or care instructions.
Care advice is genuinely useful on scissor packaging. A short note on wiping and oiling the pivot, keeping the blades dry and storing the scissors closed helps them last, and customers who look after their shears tend to come back to the same brand for the next pair. That message can live on a printed card or straight on the inside of the lid.
Getting a Price and Proof
To get started, email us the measurements, a photo of the scissors and the style you prefer. You will have a custom quote within one working day, with low minimums worked out for your order. Simple sleeves and backers start from £0.25 per unit, and boxes with foam inserts are priced on their size and build.
We then prepare a free design proof showing the box, the insert outline and your artwork. Once you sign it off, production runs for 4–7 working days, followed by free tracked UK mainland delivery in 2–3 working days. If anything arrives misprinted or damaged, tell us within 10 days and we will reprint or refund it.

Scissor Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering scissor boxes.
How do you stop the scissors opening inside the box?
We cut the insert so it grips the blades closed, usually just below the pivot. For long or heavy shears we add a blade guard or a second holding point near the tip. The proof shows exactly where the scissors are held.
Can the box show the handles without opening it?
Yes, a die-cut window over the handle area with a clear film behind it lets customers see the colour and grip. The blades stay covered by board, which looks tidier and protects the edge.
Do you make boxes for left-handed scissors?
Yes, the box itself is the same, but we recommend printing a clear left-handed mark on the front so shop staff and customers can pick the right pair quickly.
What insert suits professional hairdressing shears?
A die-cut foam insert inside a two-piece or hinged box is the usual choice. It holds the shears precisely, looks professional and gives the stylist a case they will keep for storage.
Can you fit a comb or holster in the same box?
Yes, send us the extra items and lay out how you want them arranged. We will cut separate pockets in the insert so each piece sits in place.
Will the blade tip damage the end of the carton?
A pointed tip can push through thin board if nothing protects it. We use a blade guard, a thicker end panel or an insert that keeps the tip away from the board, depending on the scissor type.
Are hang hole backers suitable for school scissors?
Yes, a printed card backer with a hang hole is the standard way to sell school and craft scissors on peg displays. The scissors are usually held with a clear blister or a tie, which you would fit at your end.
Can I print the steel grade and size on the box?
Of course. Put product details such as length, steel type and edge style on the back or underside so the front stays clean. We check that small type remains legible on the proof.
Is a rigid box worth it for scissors?
For professional and gift shears, yes, because buyers keep the box and judge quality by it. For everyday craft or household scissors a folding carton or backer is more cost-effective.
How do I get custom scissor boxes made to my sizes?
Send us the closed length, handle width and pivot thickness with a photo. We return a custom quote within one working day, then a free proof before any production starts.
Can I order sleeves only and use my own trays?
Yes, if you already have plain trays or cases, we can print slip sleeves to fit them. Send us a sample tray so the sleeve size is exact.
