Labels Do the Heavy Lifting for Small Pet Brands

Many pet food makers start with plain kraft pouches and stock jars, then rely on a label to carry the brand, the product name and all the information a buyer looks for. A good label lets one plain pouch become a chicken jerky, a salmon training treat or a puppy biscuit simply by switching the sticker.

That flexibility is why labels suit growing brands. You hold one stock of packaging and print a label for each recipe, each weight and each new flavour. When a recipe changes, you reprint a label rather than a whole run of printed bags.

A pet owner reads more of the pack than most shoppers do. They check protein sources, feeding amounts and whether the treat suits a puppy or an older dog, so legible type matters as much as the logo.

Labels also make recipe experiments cheap. A new duck and sweet potato chew can be tested at a market with a short run of labels, and if it sells, it joins the range without new pouches or boxes being ordered. If you need a second format, our pet food mylar bags can carry the same design.

Choosing Label Material for Pet Packaging

White paper labels are the simplest choice for dry treat bags and cardboard tubs. They print crisply and accept a matt or gloss varnish. For anything that may meet moisture, such as grooming shampoo bottles, wet food tubs kept in the fridge, or paw balm tins, a white or clear polypropylene label holds up far better because it does not soften or wrinkle.

Kraft paper labels pair well with brown pouches for a handmade look. Clear labels on a glass jar of biscuits let the product show through, with only the text and logo printed.

Freezer-stored raw food needs a label that copes with condensation as the tub comes out of the cold. Polypropylene with a freezer-grade adhesive stays put where paper would peel at the corners. Mention frozen storage when you ask for a quote so we specify the right glue.

For treats sold in glass jars on a counter, a clear label with white ink behind the text gives a clean, printed-on look. Customers see the biscuits through the label, which does a lot of the selling for you.

Grooming products used in a busy salon get handled with wet, soapy hands many times a day. A matt lamination over the print protects the ink from rubbing off, so the label still reads clearly when the bottle is nearly empty and ready for a refill. Labels for kibble bags and wet tins often use wipe-clean BOPP film labels, which shrug off grease and damp.

Printed Pet Labels That Fit the Pack

Measure the flat area of the pack where the label will sit, not the whole pouch. A stand-up pouch of 160 x 230 mm usually has a flat front panel of about 140 x 150 mm once you allow for the zip and the gusset fold, so a 100 x 120 mm label sits comfortably. Round tubs need a label that wraps no more than about two thirds of the way round, or the ends will be hard to read.

Shapes are cut to suit. Rectangles with rounded corners peel and apply most easily by hand, while circles and ovals suit lids and jar fronts. A bone or paw shape is possible as a die-cut and makes a fun sticker for a treat jar, though simple shapes keep application quick when you are labelling hundreds of bags.

If you apply labels by hand, ask for a slightly smaller label than the panel allows. A 3–5 mm margin all round gives staff room to place each one straight without it creeping over a seam or gusset edge, where it would lift. Brands that pack treats in boxes rather than bags can pair the labels with printed dog product boxes.

What to Put on a Pet Food Label

Put the product name and the animal it is for on the front, in large type. The back or side label is where the composition, analytical constituents, feeding guide, weight and your business details usually live. We cannot advise on legal wording, but we can set out a clear layout so every required line fits at a readable size.

Many brands use a front and back label pair on the same pouch. Front labels sell the product; back labels explain it. Printing both together on one roll keeps colours consistent across the pair. Our general custom product labels page covers the same layout rules for other product types.

Making a Treat Range Look Like a Family

Once you have more than three or four products, the labels start to work as a set on the shelf. Keep the logo, typeface and layout identical, then vary one element per recipe, such as the colour band, the illustration of the main protein, or a bold flavour word. A shopper scanning a pet shop shelf then recognises your brand first and the flavour second.

Life stage is another useful system. Puppy, adult and senior products can share a design with a different coloured corner or ribbon. Cat and dog lines can sit side by side with a small animal icon to separate them, which saves mistakes when staff restock.

We can set up a master design and supply proofs of each variation together, so you can see the whole range side by side before printing. It is much easier to spot a clash of colours or a misaligned weight figure when every label is on one page. Cat lines can follow the same family look on custom cat product boxes for toys and treats.

Rolls, Sheets and Ordering

Rolls suit anyone labelling by hand in volume or using an applicator, because the next label is always ready to peel. Sheets suit very small batches and brands printing best-before dates on a desktop printer. Tell us which you prefer and the core size if you use a dispenser.

Send your artwork, label size, material and quantity, and we will email a custom quote within one working day. A free design proof follows for approval, production takes 4–7 working days after that, and delivery to UK mainland addresses is free and tracked in 2–3 working days. Minimums are low and quoted per job, which helps when you have several recipes in small runs. If labels arrive misprinted or damaged, report it within 10 days for a reprint or refund.

Store spare rolls flat in a cool, dry cupboard away from radiators. Adhesive behaves best at room temperature, so labels kept in a cold van overnight should warm up before use. Labels applied by machine work best as custom roll labels for applicators, wound to the core size you need.

Pet Labels Questions

What buyers ask before ordering pet labels.

Which material should I use on grooming shampoo bottles?

Choose white or clear polypropylene. It does not soften in a damp bathroom or when wet hands handle the bottle, so the print stays intact.

Can one roll include labels for several treat flavours?

Yes. We can print several recipes on the same roll or as a single order with separate rolls, which keeps colours consistent across the range.

Will the labels stick to a kraft pouch?

Our standard adhesive grips kraft and coated pouches well. Apply them to a clean, dry surface and press firmly from the centre outwards.

Can you check that my feeding guide is legally correct?

We cannot give legal advice on pet food wording. We will lay the text out clearly and make sure every line is a readable size on the proof.

Can I leave space to stamp batch numbers and dates?

Yes, we can leave a plain panel on the label for a stamp or a desktop printer. Matt paper takes ink stamps better than gloss.

Can labels be cut into a bone or paw shape?

Die-cut shapes are available. Simple shapes are faster to apply by hand, so many brands keep a fun shape for the jar and a rectangle for the pouches.

Do you print white ink on clear labels?

Yes. A white underlay behind the artwork keeps colours bright on a clear label, which works well on glass jars of biscuits.

How do I size a label for a round tub?

Measure the height of the straight wall and the circumference, then keep the label to about two thirds of the way round so it reads from the front.

Can I add a new flavour to an existing label design later?

Yes. We keep your master layout on file, so a new recipe only needs the name, colour band and ingredient panel changing before a fresh proof.

Are the minimum quantities suitable for small batches?

Minimums are quoted per job and kept low, so a home pet baker can order a modest run of each flavour.
