Custom Brad Folders
Custom brad folders are card folders with two inside pockets and a set of metal fasteners down the spine, so loose sheets can be fixed in place while handouts sit in the pockets. Schools, offices and training providers print them with their logo for course packs, reports and documents that need to stay together.

Two Ways of Holding Paper in One Folder
A standard presentation folder holds paper loosely in its pockets, which is fine for a few handouts but frustrating for a thick document that needs to be read in order. A ring binder keeps pages in order but is bulky and expensive to post. A brad folder sits between the two. Metal fasteners, known as brads or prongs, pass through punched holes in the paper and fold flat to hold sheets in place, while the pockets carry loose items like brochures, forms or business cards.
That combination is why brad folders are a staple in schools, colleges and offices. A student's coursework can be fastened in sequence with a marking sheet in the pocket. A report can be fixed in order with appendices in the pocket. A training pack can hold a fastened workbook with loose worksheets and a diploma tucked beside it.
Because they are made of card, brad folders are light, flat and easy to post, store and hand out in large numbers.
They also suit documents that grow over time. A student can add each new assignment to the fasteners as the term goes on, and a project file can gather meeting notes and drafts in order, with the latest version always at the back and nothing slipping out when the folder is turned upside down in a bag. Handouts that do not need fixing go in our pocket folders without fasteners.
Layout and Fastener Options
The classic brad folder has two pockets on the inside and three metal fasteners down the centre spine, set to match standard hole punches. Some versions place the fasteners on the inside of the front or back cover instead, which keeps fastened pages to one side and both pockets free. Fasteners can be omitted from one folder in a set if some packs only need pockets.
Pockets can have slits for business cards, and the edges can be shaped with a diagonal or curved cut so documents are easy to reach. Some folders add a clear label window or a printed panel on the front for a name or course title, which helps when many folders are handed out at once. A raised logo on the cover is shown on the embossed folders for a premium cover page.

Card Weight and Durability
Brad folders get handled often, opened and closed, carried in bags and passed around a classroom. Heavier card holds its shape better and protects the contents. A laminated or varnished cover resists scuffs, spills and fingerprints, which matters for folders that will be used over a term or a long course.
Matt lamination gives a smooth, professional look and is easy to write on with a marker on uncoated panels. Gloss lamination makes printed colours vivid. For a more natural feel, uncoated card works well and can be written on directly, which is useful if students or staff will add names or notes to the cover.
Consider where the folders will live. Folders kept in a classroom tray or an office cabinet need less protection than ones carried to site visits or field trips, where a laminated cover pays for itself. For packs handed to clients once, a lighter uncoated card is usually enough and keeps the cost per pack down. The gsm figures are explained in our card weights explained guide.
Designing a Folder People Keep
The front cover is the main design area and should carry your logo, the organisation name and a title if the folder is for a specific course or document. A strong photo or a bold brand colour gives the folder presence on a desk or in a pile. The back cover can hold contact details, a website or a short description of your organisation.
Inside, the pockets are often printed too, perhaps with a pattern, a welcome message or a list of the contents. For schools, a space for the pupil's name, class and subject keeps folders from getting mixed up. For businesses, a printed panel with key contact names and numbers is genuinely useful to the client who receives the pack.
Colour coding is a simple, effective idea for organisations that run several courses or departments. Keeping the same layout but changing the cover colour for each one lets staff and students grab the right folder at a glance, while the shared design still looks like one family of stationery. Client-facing versions of the same idea are our A4 presentation folders for pitches.
Who Orders Brad Folders
Schools, colleges and universities order them for coursework, induction packs and exam revision materials. Training providers use them for course workbooks and handouts. Businesses use them for reports, proposals, client packs and new starter inductions.
Conference and event organisers include them in delegate packs. Estate agents, solicitors and accountants use them to give clients a neatly organised set of documents. Charities and community groups use them for volunteer packs and information sessions, and tutors use them to keep each pupil's work in one place. Firms sending welcome packs often choose document folders for client packs instead.
Practical Tips Before You Order
Check that your hole punch matches the fastener spacing. Standard two and three-hole punch spacings suit most fasteners, but if you use a particular punch, let us know so the brads line up. Think about how thick the fastened document will be; fasteners have a limit, so very thick documents may need a folder with a gusseted spine.
If the same folder will be used for different courses or clients, keep the cover generic and add a printed label or sticker for each one. This lets you order one design in a larger quantity rather than several small runs. Ordering a few extra folders for replacements and late additions is also sensible.
Finally, do a test assembly with your real documents before a big event. Punch a sample set, fasten it, add the pocket inserts and close the folder, so you know it shuts flat. A bound booklet inside the folder is covered by our folders with stitched inserts.
Check Your Hole Punch Before Anything Else
Brad folders only work if the sheets going into them are punched to match the fasteners, so start by measuring the hole spacing on the punch your office or school already uses. Tell us that spacing with the folder size, usually A4, and we position the brads to suit. Decide next where the fasteners sit: down the spine for a report that reads like a book, or inside the back cover to leave both pockets free for handouts. Choose the card weight by how long the folder has to last; a term's use is fine on 300 gsm, a year of being carried in a bag wants 350 gsm and a matt lamination. Artwork is a cover design plus anything for the pockets, sent as vector or high-resolution files, and we show the outside and inside on a free proof. A quote arrives by email within one working day with folders from £0.25 and low minimums per job. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval, with free tracked delivery on the UK mainland and the fasteners fitted ready to use. Everyday filing without fasteners sits with our file folders for the office.

Brad Folders Questions
What buyers ask before ordering brad folders.
What is a brad folder?
A card folder with two inside pockets and a set of metal fasteners, called brads, that hold punched sheets in place down the spine. Loose handouts go in the pockets and the fixed sheets stay in order. It is the standard folder for coursework and reports.
Where do the fasteners go?
Usually down the centre spine, so punched sheets open like a book. They can also be fitted on the inside of the back cover, which leaves both pockets free. We mark the position on the proof.
Will my hole punch match the fasteners?
Standard two and three-hole spacings suit most fasteners. Let us know if you use a particular punch.
How thick a document can a brad folder hold?
Standard fasteners hold around 40 to 50 sheets of 80 gsm paper comfortably. For thicker documents we recommend a folder with a gusseted spine and longer fasteners. Tell us the page count and we specify the right combination.
Can the inside pockets be printed?
Yes, a pattern, message or contents list printed inside the pockets is a popular extra. It is printed in the same pass as the cover before the folder is cut and glued. The proof shows the inside flat.
Can students write their names on the folder?
Yes, a name panel printed on uncoated card or a label window on the cover makes this easy. Laminated covers need a panel left unlaminated for a pen to work. We can print a dotted name line if you want one.
Can a brad folder pocket hold a business card?
Yes, two diagonal slits cut into one pocket hold a standard 85 x 55 mm business card securely. Tell us if your card is an unusual size. The slits are cut at the same time as the pockets.
Can one design work for several courses?
Yes, keep the cover generic and add a printed label or a sticker for each course. That lets you order one design in a larger quantity at a lower unit price. Course-specific details can also go on an insert sheet.
What do custom brad folders cost?
Prices start from £0.25 per folder and depend on size, card weight, print coverage and quantity. Lamination and inside print add a little. The quote itemises each choice so you can trim it.
Can folders be ready before a new term or course starts?
Production takes 4 to 7 working days after you approve the free proof, then free tracked UK mainland delivery takes 2 to 3 working days. Allow a few days for the proof stage as well. Tell us the term date and we plan around it.
Do folders arrive with fasteners fitted?
Yes, folders arrive flat with the brads already fitted and ready to use. They are packed in cartons of a stated quantity so a department can split them easily. There is nothing to assemble.
