What a C4 Envelope Is For
C4 is the envelope size made to hold A4 paper unfolded. It measures 229 x 324 mm, a little larger than the sheet itself, so a small stack slides in without catching on the corners. When a document should look the same in the recipient's hands as it did leaving the printer, C4 is the size to use: signed agreements that will be scanned, exam diplomas that will be framed, glossy brochures that would crack along a fold.
Solicitors, estate agents, schools, colleges and membership organisations get through a surprising number of these. So do businesses that post price lists, proposals or welcome packs. A plain brown envelope does the job, but a printed C4 tells the recipient who it is from before they open it, which helps important post get opened first rather than left on the side. p1 Firms that send unfolded brochures alongside letters sometimes pair these with presentation folders for A3 and A4 sheets.
Choosing the Paper Weight and Colour
Envelope paper is measured in grams per square metre. Lighter white wove paper is fine for a few sheets and keeps postage low. If you regularly send thick reports, a ring binder or a presentation folder inside, go heavier so the envelope does not tear at the side seams when it is pushed through a letterbox. Manila and buff papers are tough and practical; bright white papers make full-colour logos look crisp.
Coloured and textured papers are available for occasions where the envelope is part of the presentation, such as graduation diplomas or award letters. A cream laid paper with a single dark ink can feel more formal than full colour printing, and it costs less to produce. Ask for two paper options on your custom quote if you want to compare.
- White wove for everyday correspondence and colour logos
- Manila or buff for durable internal and legal post
- Heavier papers for reports, binders and thick packs
- Cream, laid and coloured stocks for ceremonial mailings

Flap Styles and Closures
C4 envelopes come in two main shapes. Pocket envelopes open on the short edge, which suits documents fed in by hand or by a mail inserter that pushes papers lengthways. Wallet envelopes open on the long edge, which makes it easier to slip in a folder or a stapled bundle without bending it. Which one you need often comes down to the inserting machine in your post room, or the lack of one.
Peel-and-seal strips are the most popular closure because nobody has to lick or wet anything, and the seal stays strong once pressed. Self-seal envelopes have two gummed strips that bond on contact. Traditional gummed flaps are the lowest cost and still suit large mailings that run through a franking line with a moistener. p1 For plain brown post-room stock without print, see our manila envelopes in C4 and C5.
Windows, Return Addresses and Postal Layout
A window lets the recipient's address on the top sheet show through, so you print the address once and skip a label. Windows on C4 envelopes are positioned to match standard letter templates, and we can move them if your letterhead puts the address somewhere unusual. Send us a sample page and we will line the window up with your layout before the proof.
A printed return address on the back flap means undeliverable post comes back to you instead of disappearing. Keep the front clear in the area where postal machines read the address and apply stamps or franking. We leave that zone untouched by default and only print logos and brand panels where they will not slow the post down. p1 Address windows are also standard on our slim DL envelopes for letters, where the template is tighter.
Printing Options for Large Envelopes
A C4 front is a generous canvas, but most organisations keep it simple: a logo in the top-left corner, a strapline or website and the return address on the flap. Full-bleed colour across the whole envelope is possible and suits marketing mailings, where the envelope itself has to earn the opening. Spot colour printing in one or two inks is the economical choice for routine correspondence and matches brand colours closely.
Printing inside the envelope is a subtle way to add privacy. A tinted security pattern stops the contents being read through the paper, which matters for payslips, medical letters and financial statements. We can combine an inside pattern with outside branding on the same envelope. p1 The printed envelopes overview page shows one-colour and full-colour fronts side by side.
Matching C4 Envelopes to the Rest of Your Stationery
Large envelopes rarely travel alone in a stationery order. Most offices also use DL envelopes for folded letters and C5 for A4 sheets folded once, and it pays to plan all three together. Using the same paper shade, logo position and ink colour across the set means a client who receives three letters from you over a month sees one consistent identity rather than three slightly different ones.
If you already have printed letterheads or compliment slips, send a photo or a PDF and we will match the logo size and colour to them as closely as the paper allows. Uncoated envelope paper absorbs ink differently from a smooth letterhead, so a brand colour can look a shade softer on the envelope. Our proof notes flag where that is likely so there are no surprises.
For organisations that send both routine and ceremonial post, a two-tier approach works well: a practical white or manila C4 for everyday documents, and a heavier cream or coloured C4 reserved for diplomas, awards and formal invitations. The second set is ordered in smaller quantities and lasts longer.
Send a Filled Envelope's Weight With the Artwork
C4 envelopes fail in one of two ways: a thick welcome pack splits a light envelope at the seam, or a single-page letter travels in a heavy wallet that cost more than it needed to. So before you order, put a typical filled envelope on the post-room scales and tell us the weight and the number of sheets. That decides the paper weight, and often splits one order into a light pocket for letters and a heavier wallet for packs at about the same total cost.
Tell us also if a mail inserter is used, because that fixes pocket or wallet, and send a sample letter so the window lines up with your address block. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, from £0.25 an envelope, with the minimum set per job so a small office is not buying a year's stock.
The free proof shows the print and window position on the flat envelope. Production takes 4 to 7 working days once approved, and the bundled cartons reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Offices that send folded letters as well usually order C5 envelopes in the same print in the same job.

C4 Envelopes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering C4 envelopes.
Does an A4 sheet fit in a C4 envelope without folding?
Yes. A C4 envelope measures 229 x 324 mm, which leaves a few millimetres around an A4 sheet. A small stack of pages or a thin card-backed diploma slides in flat.
What is the difference between pocket and wallet C4 envelopes?
A pocket envelope opens on the short edge and a wallet opens on the long edge. Pockets suit hand-filled letters and some inserting machines, while wallets make it easier to load folders and bundles.
Which paper weight should I pick for diplomas?
Diplomas are often printed on thick card, so a heavier envelope paper protects the corners and stops the seams splitting. If you also add a board stiffener, tell us so we can allow a little extra room.
Can you match the window position to my letterhead?
Yes. Send us a sample of your letter layout and we position the window so the address shows through cleanly. The placement is shown on your free design proof before anything is printed.
Is peel-and-seal better than gummed?
Peel-and-seal is quicker by hand and gives a reliable seal with no moisture. Gummed flaps cost less and suit franking lines with a moistener. Many offices choose peel-and-seal for everyday post.
Can I print a security pattern inside the envelope?
We can print a tinted pattern on the inside that stops letters being read through the paper. It works well for payslips, statements and medical post, and can sit alongside branding on the outside.
Will printing on the front affect postal processing?
Not if the address and stamp areas are kept clear. We keep logos and colour away from the zones that postal machines read and only print across them if you ask for a full-bleed marketing design.
Do you make gusseted C4 envelopes for thick packs?
Yes. A gusseted C4 expands at the sides and base to take binders, sample swatches or bulky welcome packs. They are quoted separately because the paper and construction are heavier.
Can a college order 300 C4 envelopes for one graduation?
Yes. Minimums are set per job, so a single batch for an awards evening or a graduation is practical, and a plain printed C4 starts from £0.25. Tell us if the diplomas are on thick card so we quote a heavier paper.
How are the envelopes packed for delivery?
They are packed in bundles inside cartons so they stay flat and clean. Delivery to UK mainland addresses is free and tracked, and any damage or misprints reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded.
