Custom Embossed Folders
Custom embossed folders carry your logo or crest as a raised impression pressed into the cover board, so it can be felt as well as seen. We produce them for companies, schools, colleges and professional firms who hand over documents in person and want the folder to look considered.

Why Embossing Suits a Presentation Folder
A printed logo can look the same on any piece of paper. An embossed one changes the surface of the board itself, catching light at an angle and giving a slight shadow around the edges. People run a thumb across it without thinking, which is exactly the kind of small moment that makes a pack feel important.
Embossing is also discreet. A blind emboss, with no ink at all, leaves a clean white or coloured cover with only the raised shape of the logo. That suits law firms, private schools and financial advisers whose brand is about restraint. If you want more impact, the emboss can be registered to a printed or foiled logo so colour and relief line up exactly.
There is a practical side as well. Embossing cannot rub off, fade or scratch the way some printed logos can after months in a briefcase. A folder handed to a client on the first meeting still looks right when it comes out again at the contract signing. p2 Firms that want the same restraint on everyday paperwork often pair these with linen-textured folders without embossing.
Blind, Registered and Foil Embossing Explained
There are three main approaches, and the choice changes how the cover looks rather than how the folder works.
Most customers choose based on the board colour. A blind emboss shines on dark or textured stocks, while a foil and emboss combination lifts a white or cream cover that might otherwise look plain. p1 The three are shown on dark and pale boards in our guide comparing print and finish options.
- Blind embossing: raised logo with no ink or foil, the quietest and most classic option
- Registered embossing: the raised area lines up with a printed logo underneath
- Foil and emboss: metallic foil is applied and raised in one combined strike
- Debossing: the reverse, where the logo is pressed down into the board

Picking Board for Custom Embossed Folders
Embossing needs a board with some body. Thin card cracks along the edges of the raised shape, while a heavy uncoated board of around 350 to 450 gsm takes a deep, crisp impression. Textured stocks such as linen or felt-marked board show the raised logo clearly because the flat background contrasts with the smooth lifted area.
Coloured boards in navy, black, burgundy or forest green are popular for embossed covers and need no ink at all. If you prefer a white cover with full colour print inside, a silk board with matt lamination works, but the lamination softens the emboss slightly, so keep the logo bold.
Weight also affects how the folder feels in the hand. A heavier board feels solid and premium when passed across a desk, which is exactly the impression most clients want an embossed cover to give.
For schools ordering large quantities, a mid-weight coloured board with a blind emboss balances cost and quality, and it holds up well when students carry folders in bags.
Pockets, Slots and Capacity
Most embossed folders are A4 with one or two glued pockets on the inside, and die-cut slots in the pocket to hold a business card. Pockets can be angled, straight or curved, and the depth decides how many sheets the folder holds comfortably.
For thicker packs, such as school prospectuses or tender documents, ask for a capacity spine of 3 to 6 mm. This lets the folder close flat around a stack of papers rather than bowing at the fold. Schools often add a slot for a USB stick or a small booklet.
Inside print is worth a thought. Many companies leave the outside blind embossed and print the inside in full colour with contact details, a short introduction or a map. The person receiving the pack sees restraint on the cover and useful information the moment they open it.
If the folder must post, check the closed size against a C4 envelope or board-backed mailer before finalising the pocket layout. p3 Standard pocket layouts are shown on our pocket folders page, including card slot positions.
Artwork Tips for a Clean Emboss
Embossing works best with bold shapes and lines thicker than about half a millimetre. Very fine serif text or tiny registration marks lose definition. Supply your logo as vector artwork so the embossing die can be cut accurately.
Think about the reverse side too. Whatever is raised on the front becomes a hollow inside the cover. On a single-thickness folder that recess sits behind the front pocket, so it is usually hidden, but we will flag it in the proof if it clashes with printed content inside.
Position matters as much as shape. Centred logos look formal; an emboss placed lower on the cover, near the bottom right corner, feels more modern. We can show both positions in the proof so you can compare them side by side before the die is made.
Keep the embossed area away from the fold and the pocket glue lines. A die that crosses a crease can crack the board or distort the emboss, so we leave a safe margin of a few millimetres around both. p3 Folders for very thick packs are better built as A4 presentation folders with a capacity spine.
Making the Die Last Across Reorders
The embossing die is a metal plate cut from your logo, and it is made once. We keep it on file, so a reorder in the same design skips the tooling step and costs less than the first run. That is one reason many organisations order a modest first batch and then repeat it each term or quarter.
If your logo is likely to change soon, tell us. A simpler foil-only folder might suit the short term, with the embossed version introduced once the brand is settled. If the logo is stable, the die can serve for many reorders, making embossed covers good value over time. p1 Brands still settling their mark can see the foil-only option on our printed promotional folders page.
Supply the Crest as a Vector and Decide What to Simplify
An embossing die is cut straight from your artwork, so the file matters more here than on any printed job. Send the logo or crest as a vector with text outlined, then look hard at the finest lines: anything under half a millimetre will not hold a clean edge, and school crests with mottoes and scrollwork nearly always need a little simplifying. We mark the changes on the free proof before the die is made, so nothing is cut that you have not seen.
Choose the board next, because it fixes the depth of the impression: a 350 to 450 gsm uncoated or textured stock takes the deepest, cleanest emboss. Send the pocket layout and the number of folders, and the custom quote arrives by email within one working day with the die costed once; the minimum is set per job and the die stays on file for reorders.
Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the folders reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Firms that want colour as well as relief usually look at our foil stamped folders with registered emboss at the same time.

Embossed Folders Questions
What buyers ask before ordering embossed folders.
What is the difference between embossing and debossing on a folder?
Embossing raises the logo above the surface of the cover, while debossing presses it down into the board. Both are made with a metal die and both work well on heavy uncoated stocks. Embossing tends to catch the light more, while debossing looks more subtle.
Can the emboss line up with a printed logo?
Yes, that is called registered embossing. The raised area is aligned with the printed or foiled logo, and the proof shows both layers so you can check the fit.
Will lamination flatten the embossed logo?
Lamination slightly softens the edges of the emboss but does not flatten it. If a crisp raised edge matters most, choose an uncoated or textured board without lamination.
How many sheets will an embossed folder hold?
A standard A4 folder without a spine holds roughly a dozen sheets comfortably. Adding a 3 to 6 mm capacity spine lets it close flat around a much thicker pack.
Can my school crest be embossed in fine detail?
Crests often contain fine lines and small lettering. We usually simplify the smallest details so the emboss stays clean, and we show the adjusted version in the proof before the die is made.
Do embossed folders need ink at all?
No. A blind emboss on a coloured board is one of the most elegant options and needs no ink. You can still print contact details on the back or inside if needed.
Can I add business card slots to the pocket?
Yes. Die-cut slots on one or both pockets are standard and add nothing complicated to production. Tell us if you use standard UK business cards or a different size.
Which board colour shows an emboss best?
Mid to dark coloured boards such as navy, burgundy and charcoal show shadow and highlight well. Textured white boards also work nicely because the smooth raised logo contrasts with the textured background.
Can I order embossed folders for one event?
Yes, minimums are quoted per job. Bear in mind that the embossing die is a one-off cost, so ordering a slightly larger quantity often lowers the price per folder.
How quickly can embossed folders be ready for an open day?
Allow time for the proof, then 4 to 7 working days of production and 2 to 3 working days for free tracked UK mainland delivery. Ordering three weeks ahead gives a safe margin.
What artwork format do you need?
Vector files such as AI, EPS or PDF with outlined text are ideal because the embossing die is cut from them. If you only have a high-resolution image, we can redraw a simple logo for the proof.
