Custom Linen Folders With a Tactile, Woven Finish
Custom linen folders are presentation folders made from board pressed with a fine woven texture, so they feel like cloth-bound stationery the moment a client picks one up. With a foiled or embossed logo and pockets inside, they carry proposals, contracts and reports in a way plain gloss folders cannot match.

Why Texture Changes the Impression
Most presentation folders are smooth and shiny. They do the job, but they feel like marketing material, which is fine for a printed promotional folder and wrong for a will. Linen board has a crosshatched surface that catches light softly and gives the fingers something to register. It reads as considered, traditional and quietly confident, which is exactly the impression a law firm wants when handing over an engagement letter, or an architect wants when presenting a scheme to a client.
Texture also hides wear. A folder carried to meetings, opened and closed, slid in and out of a bag, picks up marks quickly on a smooth gloss finish. The linen surface disguises small scuffs and fingerprints, so the folder still looks presentable after a few weeks of use, which is how long many client files stay in circulation.
There is also the matter of consistency. A firm that sends letters on quality paper and then hands over documents in a flimsy folder sends mixed signals. Linen folders sit naturally alongside laid or textured letterheads, business cards and compliments slips, so the whole set feels like one considered identity rather than a collection of items bought from different places.
Board Colours and Weights
Linen board comes in a range of shades. Brilliant white and soft ivory are the most popular, since they feel classic and take printed colour cleanly; the guide to board and card types explains the weights behind them. Natural and stone shades suit architects, interior designers and heritage businesses. Deeper colours such as navy, charcoal, forest green and burgundy look striking with metallic foil and are favoured by law firms, financial advisers and private members' clubs.
Board weight around 350 to 400 gsm gives a folder that holds its shape when full of papers without being too stiff to open flat. For folders that carry heavy reports or brochures, a slightly heavier board and a spine with a capacity crease of a few millimetres stop the folder bulging.
- White and ivory for classic, clean designs

Decorating Custom Linen Folders
Because the texture already does so much work, restraint suits linen folders. A logo in hot foil on the front cover is the most popular choice: gold or copper on dark boards, silver or a coloured foil on pale ones. Blind embossing raises the logo without any colour for an understated look, and debossing presses it into the board. Combining foil and embossing gives a raised, metallic logo that looks almost like jewellery.
Full colour print works on white and ivory linen, though the texture breaks up very fine detail and large solid areas slightly, giving a gentle, printed-on-fabric look. Keep text a little larger than you would on smooth board, and avoid hairline rules that may disappear into the weave. Contact details and a short strapline usually go on the back cover or inside a pocket.
Pockets, Slits and Inside Layout
Inside, most folders have one or two pockets to hold A4 sheets. Pockets can be straight, angled or curved, and the edges can be die-cut into a shape that echoes your logo, as on our die-cut presentation folders. Business card slits on one pocket let you include a named contact, and a CD or USB slot is still useful for firms that hand over files on a drive.
Printing the inside panels, even with a simple colour or a subtle pattern, turns opening the folder into a small moment. Some firms print a short welcome message, a summary of services or a list of key contacts on the inside left panel, so the folder introduces the business before the client reads the documents.
Ask for the pocket glue to run only along the outer edges, so papers slide in easily and the folder still opens flat on a desk.
Sizing for the Documents You Send
Standard folders take A4 sheets, with a closed size of around 220 x 310 mm so documents sit comfortably inside without corners poking out. If you regularly send A4 brochures that are slightly larger, or bound reports with covers, measure the thickest and largest item and allow a little extra, or step up to the A4 presentation folders with a capacity spine. A5 folders suit menus, price lists and smaller welcome packs, and longer formats suit architectural drawings or award documents.
Think about how many sheets go in. A folder with a flat spine suits a handful of pages; a capacity spine of 5 to 10 mm suits thicker packs and stops the pockets tearing at the edges.
If you are unsure, send us one of each document you usually include, or list their sizes and page counts, and we will suggest a folder size and spine depth. A test folder filled with your real paperwork shows straight away whether the pockets grip well and whether the cover closes neatly.
Where Linen Folders Fit Best
Law firms use them for engagement letters, wills and completion packs. Accountants and financial advisers use them for annual reports and client packs, often with matching printed letterheads inside. Estate agents use them for valuation proposals on premium properties. Architects and interior designers use them for scheme presentations. Hotels and venues use them for wedding and events proposals, and private schools use them for admissions packs. Recruitment firms and consultancies hand them to candidates and clients at key meetings.
In each case, the folder is not just a holder. It is part of the service, and clients notice when a business has taken care with the details.
Some firms keep two versions: a fully foiled folder for new client meetings and a simpler printed linen folder for routine correspondence, both in the same board colour so they look related.
Match the Board Colour to Your Letterhead Before Choosing the Foil
Linen folders are usually handed over with paperwork inside, so the first decision is the colour that sits beside your letterhead. Lay a sheet of your stationery on white, ivory and a dark linen swatch and choose the one that makes the paper look intended; dark boards want foil, pale boards take printed colour. Then count the sheets in a typical pack to settle flat folder or capacity spine, and decide if the pocket gets a card slit. Send a scan of the letterhead with the artwork so the foil and the print can be matched to it.
With the folder size, board colour, decoration, pocket layout, artwork and quantity, a custom quote arrives by email within one working day; simple stationery items start from £0.25 and linen folders are quoted per job on board, foil and finishing, with minimums set per order. A free design proof shows the flat folder with foil, emboss and pockets marked. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and free tracked delivery reaches UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days. Firms that present award or completion documents often add foil stamped folders in a second colour to the order.

Linen Folders Questions
What buyers ask before ordering linen folders.
What is linen board?
Board pressed with a fine woven texture that looks and feels like cloth. It gives folders a premium, tactile finish.
Which colours suit a law firm?
Navy, charcoal, burgundy or ivory with gold or silver foil are popular. They feel traditional and professional.
Does full colour print work on linen?
Yes, on white and ivory boards. The texture softens very fine detail slightly, so keep text a little larger.
Is foil or embossing better?
Foil gives a metallic shine; embossing gives a raised, colourless effect. Combining them creates a raised metallic logo.
Can I add business card slits?
Yes, slits on one pocket hold a business card so clients know who to contact. We cut them for a standard card and angle them so the card reads as the folder opens.
Do I need a capacity spine?
If you send more than a handful of sheets, yes. It stops the folder bulging and the pockets tearing.
Can the inside of a linen folder be printed?
Yes, inside panels can carry a colour, pattern or a short welcome message, and the linen texture shows through a light print. Dark inside colours on a pale board give a smart contrast when the folder opens.
Will linen folders show wear quickly?
The texture hides small scuffs and fingerprints better than smooth gloss folders. Folders kept in a briefcase for repeated meetings still look presentable after several outings.
Can pocket edges be shaped?
Yes, die-cut pocket edges can follow a curve or a shape linked to your logo. Keep the shape simple so the pocket still holds sheets securely along its full width.
We have a big pitch soon. How quickly can folders arrive?
Count 4 to 7 working days from approval to produce the linen folders, plus 2 to 3 working days for free tracked delivery on the UK mainland. Approving the proof promptly is the quickest way to protect a pitch date.
What if the foil is misaligned?
Get in touch within 10 days with a photo and we either reprint or refund the affected linen folders. Check a few folders from each carton when the order lands, since a registration fault usually shows across one run rather than a single folder.
