What Makes a Good Takeaway Soup Tub

A soup tub has a harder life than a coffee cup. It holds a heavier, thicker liquid, often for longer, and gets carried in a bag on its side as often as upright. The wall needs to stay stiff when it is full of something steaming, the seam must not weep, and the lid has to stay put when the bag gets knocked.

Our soup containers use a paperboard wall with a liquid-resistant lining on the inside and a rolled rim that the lid snaps over. Double-wall versions add an outer layer with a small air gap, which keeps fingers comfortable without a separate sleeve. Food-contact grade board is available on request; tell us what you serve and at what temperature, and we will recommend the right build.

Shape matters too. A tub that is wider than it is tall sits steady in a bag and lets a customer get a spoon to the bottom easily. Taller, narrower tubs take less counter space and stack well in a hot holding unit. For smaller sides and sauces, our printed paper soup cups share the same build.

Kraft or White: Choosing a Look for Your Soup

Kraft board gives a natural, farmhouse feel that suits delis, bakeries and cafés selling homemade soup. A single colour logo printed in black or a dark brand colour looks clean and keeps costs down. White board is better when you want a bright full colour design, such as a pattern that wraps right around the tub or an illustration of your menu.

Whichever you choose, think about how the tub will be seen. In a chiller cabinet, a printed panel facing outwards needs a big, clear brand mark. On a delivery order, the lid is what the customer sees first when they open the bag, so a printed sticker on the lid can carry the flavour name and your social handle. The same kraft or white choice applies across our food and takeaway packaging range, so your boxes and tubs can match.

  • Kraft with a one-colour logo for a homemade look
  • White with full colour wrap print for strong branding
  • Plain tubs with printed lid stickers for small batches
  • Different colours per flavour for a quick visual check

Matching Soup Container Sizes to Your Portions

Most cafés use two sizes: a cup for a side with a sandwich and a larger bowl for soup as a main. Work out how much your ladle actually serves and leave room at the top, because a tub filled to the brim splashes when the lid goes on and leaks when it is carried.

Lids come in two main types. A flat paper lid stacks well and gives a clean printable top. A vented lid lets steam escape so condensation does not soften the board or drip when the lid is lifted. For delivery, a vented lid with a tab is usually the safer option; for grab-and-go chilled soups, a flat lid is fine.

If you also sell porridge, chilli or noodle dishes, choose sizes that cover those as well, so one tub family does several jobs and you only keep a few lines in stock. If noodle dishes are a big part of the menu, our custom printed noodle boxes may suit them better.

Hot Holding, Microwaving and Practical Limits

Paper soup containers are built for serving and carrying hot food, not for cooking in. They cope well with soup ladled straight from the pot and with a short spell in a hot holding cabinet. Customers often ask whether they can reheat soup in the tub; we suggest you tell them to check the guidance printed on the base and to remove any lid with a film or foil layer first.

Very oily dishes, such as curries with a thick layer of oil on top, can test any paper tub over a long time. If that is your menu, ask us about a heavier lining, and run a test with your own recipe before a large order. We are happy to send plain samples so you can fill, carry and leave a tub on the side for an hour to see how it behaves. Shallower printed paper soup bowls cool a little faster, which suits soups eaten straight away at a table.

Branding Ideas That Work on a Round Tub

A curved wall shows only part of the design at a time, so plan the print as a band rather than a single front panel. Repeating your logo two or three times around the tub means it is always visible, whichever way the tub faces in a bag or on a table.

Some kitchens print a short line under the rim, such as a reheating tip or the line that their soup is made fresh each morning. Others keep the tub minimal and let a coloured lid sticker change with each daily special. Both approaches keep the cost of printed stock low while still making the tub look like it belongs to your shop. A matching branded takeaway paper bag carries the same logo out of the door.

Running a Busy Soup Counter

At lunchtime the queue moves only as fast as the person ladling. Keep tubs and lids in matching stacks within arm's reach of the pot, and choose lids that click on with one press rather than ones that need working round the rim. A few seconds saved on each order adds up over a rush.

Mark sizes clearly. If your small and large tubs look similar, staff grab the wrong one and portions drift. Printing the size on the base, or using a different board colour for each size, stops that from happening and helps you keep food costs steady.

For delivery platforms, pair the soup tub with a carry bag or a cup carrier so the tub travels upright, and pack bread or croutons separately so they stay crisp. Small touches like these are what customers remember when they leave a rating. A sturdy printed cup carrier keeps two tubs upright when an order includes several soups.

Ordering Branded Soup Containers

Send us your sizes, lid type, board colour and an idea of how many tubs you get through in a month. We will reply with a custom quote by email within one working day, and minimums are set per job, so a small café can still have printed tubs rather than plain stock.

Your artwork comes back as a free design proof laid out on the curved template, so you can see exactly how the band wraps around the tub. Production takes 4–7 working days after you approve it, followed by free tracked delivery to the UK mainland in 2–3 working days. If a delivery arrives damaged or printed wrongly, report it within 10 days for a reprint or refund.

Prices start from £0.25 per tub, depending on size, wall type and print.

Soup Containers Questions

What buyers ask before ordering soup containers.

Will a paper soup container leak in a delivery bag?

A tub with a properly fitted lid and a filling level below the rim holds up well. For delivery we suggest a vented lid with a pull tab and a bag that keeps the tub upright.

Do I need double-wall tubs for hot soup?

Not always, but they keep the outside cooler to hold. If customers carry the tub in their hands, double wall is worth it; if it always goes in a bag, single wall is often enough.

Are your soup tubs suitable for food contact?

Food-contact grade board is available on request. Tell us what you serve and we will confirm the right lining and board for your menu.

Can customers microwave soup in the tub?

Paper tubs are designed for serving and carrying rather than cooking. Advise customers to follow the guidance on the base and remove any lid with a film layer before heating.

Can I print the lid as well as the tub?

Yes. Printed paper lids or a printed lid sticker are both options. Stickers are handy if you want to change the flavour name each day.

Which sizes do most cafés order?

A smaller side portion and a larger main portion cover most menus. A wide low bowl adds flexibility if you also sell porridge or salads.

How does print look on kraft tubs?

Dark single colours, especially black, print crisply on kraft and give a homemade look. Bright full colour artwork is better on white board.

Will oily curries soften the tub?

Very oily food can test any paper tub over a long time. Ask about a heavier lining and try a plain sample with your own recipe before ordering a large run.

Can I get matching tubs for chilled soups?

Yes. The same tubs work for chilled soups and grab-and-go cabinets. A flat lid usually looks neater for chilled lines.

How soon can printed tubs reach my café?

Production takes 4–7 working days after you approve the free design proof, and free tracked UK mainland delivery takes 2–3 working days after that.

What if a carton of tubs arrives crushed?

Report any damage or misprint within 10 days of delivery and we will reprint or refund the affected stock.
