Custom Shoe Boxes with Handles

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom shoe boxes with handles combine a sturdy footwear box with a built-in carry handle, so the box leaves the shop without a separate bag. They are a favourite with children's shoe shops and sports retailers, where the box becomes something to show off on the way home.

One Box That Doubles as the Carrier

In a normal shoe shop, the box goes into a carrier bag at the till. A shoe box with a handle removes that step. The customer picks it up by the handle and walks out, and your logo is on full view rather than hidden inside a bag. For busy Saturday trade, it also saves seconds at every sale.

Children in particular love carrying their own box. A brightly printed box with a handle turns new school shoes or football boots into a small event, and many of those boxes end up reused for toys, cards or collections at home. That is long-lasting brand exposure from a box you were going to buy anyway. Where the shoe is a gift rather than a fitting, the plainer printed shoe boxes without a handle are the cheaper option.

Handle Types and How They Are Fitted

The most common design is a die-cut handle formed from the box board itself. Two flaps fold up from the top and lock together, with a cut-out grip in the middle. It is strong, quick to assemble and needs no extra parts. Gable-style shoe boxes use the same idea with sloped sides, giving a house-shaped profile that children enjoy.

For a more premium feel, we can add a rope, ribbon or cotton tape handle threaded through punched holes in the lid. These are popular for adult trainers and fashion footwear where the box is meant to feel like a gift. Plastic clip handles are another option and are very sturdy for heavier boots. The same die-cut and rope handles are used on our toy boxes with carry handles, which children's shops often order alongside.

Getting the Size Right for Footwear

Shoe sizes vary a lot between ranges, so measure the largest pair you will put in each box size, with tissue or any inserts in place. Measure length heel to toe, the width across both shoes laid side by side, and the height at the tallest point, which for trainers is often the heel collar and for boots the shaft.

Allow 10 to 15 mm on length and width so the pair slides in easily, and a little headroom so the lid closes without pressing on the toe box. Children's shoes usually need two or three box sizes to cover infant, junior and older child ranges. Adult trainers commonly fit one standard size, with a taller box for high-tops and boots.

Remember the handle sits above the box, so if boxes are stacked in a stockroom, the handle design needs to fold flat or nest under the next box. Most die-cut handles do this naturally. Shops that fold boxes at the till from flat sometimes prefer foldable shoe boxes that store flat in the same sizes.

Board Strength for Carrying

A box with a handle takes all the weight through a small area of board, so material choice matters more than for a plain shoe box. Lighter children's shoes travel well in a thick folding boxboard. For adult trainers, walking boots or football boots with studs, we recommend E flute corrugated board, which handles the strain and resists crushing when stacked.

Kraft board gives a rugged, outdoorsy look that suits hiking and sports retailers. White board shows bright colours and illustrations more accurately, which is why it is the usual choice for children's ranges. We will propose a board on your custom quote once we know the heaviest pair the box needs to carry.

Ask whoever works the stockroom how boxes are assembled today. If they currently fold plain shoe boxes in the stockroom, a handle box with a crash-lock base is quicker to set up than a full tuck style. If space is tight, choose a design that ships flat and assembles in seconds.

Check the handle with your heaviest product. We are happy to suggest a sample before a large order so you can load it with boots and carry it around the shop. It is the best way to confirm the board and handle style are right.

Print Ideas for Kids' and Sports Shops

For children's shoes, full-colour print with playful illustrations, a mascot or a pattern repeating your logo works well. Some shops leave a small panel on the end of the box where the shoe size and child's name can be written. For sports shops, bold brand colours, a clear logo on the handle panel and a short line about your fitting service send the right message.

Think about the end panels too. Shoe boxes are often stored end-out on shelves, so a size and colour panel on one end helps staff find stock quickly. A matt finish gives a modern feel, while gloss lamination protects against scuffs from small hands and repeated handling.

Making the Box Part of the Fitting Experience

In children's shoe shops, the moment a child is handed their box is part of the visit. Some shops print a measuring guide or growth chart inside the lid so parents can check foot size at home and know when to come back. Others print a simple colouring panel or a puzzle on the inside.

Sports retailers can use the inside of the lid for care advice: how to clean boots after a muddy match, how to dry trainers without heat and when studs should be checked. Practical notes like these show expertise and bring customers back for their next pair.

If you also sell online, the same box can go inside a plain shipping carton, so web customers receive the identical branded box that in-store customers carry home. One design across both channels keeps stock simpler and makes your brand feel consistent wherever people buy from you.

A box with a handle is also useful at events, school uniform fittings and pop-up stalls, where carrier bags blow around and space behind a table is limited.

Measure the Largest Pair in Each Size Band First

Shoe boxes with handles are sized in bands, not per pair, so the job is to find the largest shoe in each band you sell: the biggest infant shoe, the biggest junior trainer, the biggest adult boot. Measure each one heel to toe, across the widest point and at the highest point of the upper, with the pair placed heel to toe as they will sit in the box, then add 10 to 15 mm. Weigh the heaviest pair in the band as well, because that decides the board and the handle style. Shops that post orders can keep the same sizes for corrugated shoe boxes built for couriers.

Prepare artwork for the lid, the end panel with the size window, and the inside lid if you want a fitting or care message. Email the sizes, weights, handle choice and quantity per size and a custom quote comes back within one working day, followed by a free design proof. Boxes are made in 4 to 7 working days after approval and reach UK mainland addresses free and tracked in 2 to 3 days. Boxes that arrive torn or misprinted are reprinted or refunded when reported within 10 days.

Shoe Boxes with Handles Questions

What buyers ask before ordering shoe boxes with handles.

Is the handle strong enough for walking boots?

Yes, if the box is made from E flute corrugated board or uses a plastic clip handle. Heavy footwear puts a lot of strain on the handle area, so we size the board to your heaviest pair. A sample can be made so you can test it.

Will boxes with handles still stack in a stockroom?

Most die-cut handles fold flat or tuck down, so boxes stack normally. Rope handles lie flat on the lid. We can show stacking behaviour on the proof if storage space is a concern.

Can children's shoe boxes have a space for the child's name?

Yes, we can leave a clear panel on the end or lid where a name and size can be written in marker. Many children's shops like this touch. The panel is shown on your free proof.

Do I still need carrier bags with these boxes?

For most customers, no. The handle lets them carry the box straight out of the shop. Some retailers keep a few bags for customers buying several pairs at once.

Can I get a gable-shaped shoe box?

Yes, gable shoe boxes have sloped sides that meet at a locking handle at the top. Children find the shape fun, and it assembles quickly. It suits lighter children's shoes best.

Which finish copes best with small hands?

Gloss lamination resists scuffs and sticky fingers better than an unlaminated board. Matt lamination also protects the print while giving a softer look. Both are listed as options on your custom quote.

How many box sizes does a children's shoe shop need?

Usually two or three, covering infant, junior and older child sizes. Measure the largest pair in each group with tissue in place. We then suggest sizes that fit the whole range neatly.

Can the end panel show the shoe size and colour?

Yes, we can print a size and colour panel on one end so staff find stock quickly on shelves. Some shops leave it blank for a sticker instead. Both options appear on the proof.

Can the handle be in a different material, such as ribbon?

Yes, ribbon, cotton tape or rope handles are threaded through punched holes in the lid. They suit fashion footwear and gift pairs. Tell us the colour you want and we will include it in the quote.

How long does production take for a single shop's order?

Production takes 4–7 working days after you approve the free design proof. The finished shoe boxes with handles reach UK mainland addresses free and tracked in 2–3 working days. Minimums are low and quoted per job.
