Seed Paper Packaging Printed on Plantable Sheets

from £0.25 a sheetPriced per job · low minimums

Tags, bands, wraps, cards and small envelopes made from a handmade cotton and paper pulp sheet with wildflower or herb seeds pressed into it. The customer tears the piece up, sows it in soil, keeps it damp and it grows. We print your logo and message on the sheet in water-based ink and list the paper and the seed mix on the quote.

How the Paper Is Made

The sheet starts as a slurry of cotton rag and paper pulp, with seeds stirred in before the pulp is pressed and air-dried. The result is a thick, slightly textured paper, around 200 to 250 gsm, with visible seeds on both faces. It is made in small batches by hand, so each sheet varies a little in texture and the seed pattern is never the same twice.

Seed mixes are chosen for easy germination in UK gardens: a wildflower mix of poppy, cornflower and daisy, a herb mix of basil, parsley and chive, or a single flower variety where you want a specific bloom. The seed mix is named on the quote. The paper itself is uncoated and unbleached, with no laminate or film, and takes water-based ink.

We print and cut the paper; we do not grow the seed, so the germination rate depends on how and when the piece is sown. Your customer should sow it within about a year of receiving it for the best result. For the box, bag or sleeve that the paper piece goes with, the kraft pillow boxes for small gifts are a common pairing in the same uncoated kraft look.

Pieces We Cut

Swing tags are the most ordered piece: a rectangle or shape with a punched hole, tied to a product with cotton twine. They carry a logo on one side and sowing instructions on the other. Belly bands wrap a bar of soap, a candle or a folded garment and are sealed with a paper dot. Small envelopes hold a gift card or a note and are made from a single folded sheet.

Insert and thank-you cards go inside an order and are the piece customers keep. Place cards and favour tags are cut for weddings and events, where the whole table receives something to take home and sow. Business cards and bookmarks are cut from the same sheet for brands that want their card to do something after the meeting.

Any flat shape can be cut: a leaf, a heart, a bottle outline or a logo. A custom die is made once and kept for reorders. The paper is too thick and uneven to fold reliably into a box, so for a box with the same feel we suggest a kraft carton with a seed paper tag or band; the favour boxes for weddings and events show that combination.

Printing on Seed Paper

The surface is textured and absorbent, so print is best kept simple: a logo, a short line of text, a small illustration. We print one or two colours in water-based ink, which sits on the fibres with a soft, slightly uneven edge that suits the handmade sheet. Fine detail and small type fill in, so keep text above 9 pt and avoid thin lines.

Full-colour print is possible but the colours look muted on the natural sheet and the seeds show through solid areas. Most brands use the paper's own look as the design and add a single colour. Solid ink floods should be avoided because the ink can affect germination where it covers the seeds.

Sowing instructions on the back are part of the standard artwork. We supply a plain wording for them if you do not have your own: tear the paper into pieces, press into soil, cover lightly, water and keep damp until shoots appear. The thank-you cards printed for orders page shows how a short message and instructions share one card.

Finishing and Fixings

Tags are punched with a 4 mm hole and supplied with natural cotton or jute twine, cut to length or on a spool. Belly bands are scored for the fold and come with paper seal dots. Envelopes are folded and left unglued at the flap so a seal dot or a sticker closes them. Edges are cut straight or, for a softer look, left with the deckle edge of the handmade sheet on one side.

We do not laminate, varnish or foil this paper, because any coating would seal the seeds in. Embossing is possible on a plain area and gives a subtle logo without ink. Rounded corners are standard on tags and cards so the edges do not catch.

If the piece is tied to a product that will be handled a lot, such as a garment on a rail, use a thicker 250 gsm sheet and a reinforced hole. For a printed paper tag without seeds, in the same style, the hang tags for clothing and accessories are cut on a standard card stock.

Who Orders It

Soap, candle and skincare makers use the swing tag or belly band on a product that already has a natural look. Clothing brands tie a tag to each garment with the care note on the back. Florists and garden centres hand out a seed card with every bouquet. Wedding planners order place cards and favour tags by the hundred.

Estate agents, charities and conference organisers use the business card and bookmark formats as something people keep instead of throwing away. Subscription boxes slip a seed card into each parcel. Bakeries and cafés add a small tag to a gift box of biscuits or a jar of jam.

A number of buyers order the same artwork on a tag and a card so the brand appears on the product and inside the parcel. For the envelope that carries the card, our DL envelopes printed with your logo are the usual match.

Storing and Handling the Paper

The seeds stay viable for about a year if the paper is kept dry and cool. Store the pieces flat in their box, away from radiators, damp and direct sun. Do not store them in a plastic bag where condensation can form, because any moisture can start the seeds early.

Handle the paper like any thick card. It will mark if it gets wet, so keep it away from the product if the product is a liquid or a cosmetic in a glass jar that might sweat. A tag tied to the outside of a box or a band around a dry bar of soap is ideal.

Tell your customers what the paper is on the piece itself; an unexplained seed card gets kept as a card rather than sown. A line such as 'this card grows into wildflowers' on the front is enough. For small-run stationery to go with the pieces, the printed notepads for your desk are made to the same artwork rules.

Price, Proof and Delivery

Send the piece, the size, the seed mix, the number of print colours and the quantity, with your logo and any wording. A custom quote comes by email within one working day and names the paper, the seed mix and the fixings. Minimums are low and set per job, and single-colour tags start from £0.25 on larger runs.

A free design proof shows the artwork on the cut shape, front and back. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval and delivery is free and tracked to UK mainland addresses in 2–3 working days, flat in a box with a note on storage. If any pieces arrive misprinted or damaged, tell us within 10 days with a photo and we reprint or refund them. For a full stationery set in the same style, the printed stationery range overview lists the matching items.

Seed Paper Packaging Questions

What buyers ask before ordering seed paper packaging.

What is the paper made of?

A handmade sheet of cotton rag and paper pulp with seeds pressed in during making, 200 or 250 gsm, uncoated and unbleached.

Which seeds are in it?

A wildflower mix, a herb mix or a single flower variety, chosen for UK gardens. The mix is named on your quote.

Will the seeds grow?

They are viable for about a year if the paper is kept dry and cool. Germination depends on how and when the piece is sown, so we print sowing instructions on every piece.

Can you make a box from seed paper?

No. The sheet is too thick and uneven to fold into a box. We suggest a kraft box with a seed paper tag, band or card instead.

Does seed paper take full-colour print?

Yes, but colours look muted and the seeds show through. One or two colours suit the paper best, and solid ink floods should be avoided over the seeds.

Is there any coating on the paper?

No. A laminate or varnish would seal the seeds in, so the paper is left uncoated. Embossing on a plain area is possible.

Can I have a custom shape?

Yes. Leaves, hearts, bottles and logo outlines are cut with a one-off die that we keep for reorders.

What twine comes with the tags?

Natural cotton or jute, cut to length or on a spool, with a 4 mm punched hole.

How should I store the pieces?

Flat in their box, cool and dry, away from radiators and sunlight, and never in a sealed plastic bag.

Is there a minimum number of pieces?

Low and set per job. Send the piece, size and quantity and the quote shows the price at that volume.

How long before the pieces are delivered?

Seed paper is slower to print than board because the sheet must stay dry, so allow a little more time: the quote arrives within one working day, production takes 4–7 working days after proof approval and free tracked UK mainland delivery takes 2–3 working days.
