Custom Pencil Boxes with Window

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom pencil boxes with window panels let a shopper count the colours before they pick the set up, which is exactly what art buyers want to do. We print the board around a clear film panel cut to frame the pencil tips, so the product does half the selling for you.

Why a Window Sells Colouring Pencils

A colouring set is bought on range. Parents want to see that the greens are not all the same green, artists want to check that a set actually contains the warm greys it promises, and teachers want to know the leads are sharpened. A solid printed carton asks the buyer to trust a printed swatch strip. A window lets them check the real thing.

The window also makes your printed panel work harder. Because the pencils supply the colour, the surrounding board can stay calm: a brand mark, the set name, the number of shades and the grade. That restraint tends to look more confident on a shelf than a carton crowded with illustrated rainbows.

For art and school brands that sell in several sizes of set, a window turns the range into a visible ladder. The small set shows a short row of tips, the large set a long one, and the shopper reads the difference without opening anything.

Where the Window Goes and How Big to Cut It

Most windowed pencil boxes frame the sharpened ends, because that is where the colour is most visible and the barrels can carry their own branding lower down. A strip window running the full width of the box, about a third of the way from the top, is the usual choice for flat tins-style cartons that sit face up.

For upright display packs, a window on the front face that follows the stepped heights of the pencils can look striking, but it needs a stable tray inside so the pencils do not slide out of line in transit. We can add a card insert with slots or a stepped riser for that.

Keep at least 8 mm of board on every side of the window. Too thin a border weakens the panel and the box can bow when stacked. If your set is very long, two shorter windows divided by a printed bar often hold up better than one long cut.

Board, Film and Construction

Folding boxboard in the 300 to 400 gsm range suits most sets of up to two dozen pencils. Heavier sets, or boxes that double as a desk store for years, are better in a thicker board or with a reinforced tray. Kraft board gives a natural, studio-supply look that sits well with graphite and charcoal ranges.

The window film is a clear sheet glued to the inside of the panel before folding. It keeps dust off the pencil tips and stops small fingers poking the leads in a shop. If you would rather have an open cut-out with no film, we can do that too, though it suits pencils sold in a sealed outer wrap better than loose sets.

Common constructions include: p2 Board weights are compared in the guide to board and card types.

  • Sleeve and tray, where a printed sleeve slides over a white or printed tray
  • Tuck end carton with the window on the main face
  • Hinged lid box that opens like a book and closes with a tuck flap
  • Hanging display box with a euro slot punched into a header panel

Printing Around Clear Film

Full colour print on the outer board is standard, and the inside of the lid can be printed too, which is a nice place for a colour chart or a short note on sharpening and storage. Because the pencils show through, avoid putting critical text right next to the window edge, where the eye is pulled towards the product.

A matt laminate keeps fingerprints down on boxes that are handled a lot in stationery shops. Gloss suits bright children's ranges. Spot UV on the logo or a foil on the set name lifts a premium artist range without changing the basic carton.

When you send artwork, mark the window position on a separate layer. Our free design proof will show the cut lines, folds and window together, so you can see exactly how much of each pencil will be visible before anything is printed.

Measuring Your Pencils for a Good Fit

Measure a sharpened pencil from tip to end, then measure the width of the full row lying side by side. Add a couple of millimetres in each direction so the set drops in without forcing. Hexagonal pencils need slightly more room across the row than round ones because the flats do not always nest.

If the set includes a sharpener, an eraser or a blending stump, tell us where you want them to sit. A small pocket in the insert keeps loose items from rattling against the film. For sets that will be restocked by the buyer, a tray with individual slots is worth the small extra cost. p1 The guide to measuring a product covers rows of items side by side.

Shelf Sets Versus Gift Sets

A set sold on a busy stationery shelf has a different job from one bought as a present. On the shelf, the box has a second or two to make its case, so the window should be large, the set size printed big and the brand easy to spot from a distance. Spine or end-panel print matters too, because many shops stack sets on their side.

A gift set is usually handled and turned over, so it can afford a smaller, more framed window and more detail on the back: the shade names, a short note about the pigment, or the story of the brand. A sleeve over a rigid tray, or a hinged box with a ribbon pull, makes the opening feel like part of the present.

If you sell both ways, the simplest answer is one tray and insert with two different outer sleeves. The pencils are packed the same way every time, and you only change the printed wrap depending on where the set is going. It keeps stock simple and lets you test a new look on a short run without changing the whole pack.

Lay the Set Side by Side and Measure the Row

A pencil box with a window is sized to the row, not to one pencil, and hexagonal pencils take more room across the row than round ones because the flats do not nest. Lay the full set side by side, sharpened, measure the row width and a pencil tip to end, and add 2 mm each way. If a sharpener or an eraser goes in, say where; it needs a pocket in the insert so it does not rattle against the film.

Decide a straight window or a tip-tracing zigzag, which needs the insert to hold every pencil at the same height, and keep at least 8 mm of board around it. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, from £0.25 a box, with the minimum set per job.

The free proof shows the window and the insert; ordering two set sizes together keeps the borders and window position matching across the range. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the boxes reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Brands with a sketchbook in the range usually add our stationery boxes for pads and pens in the same print.

Pencil Boxes with Window Questions

What buyers ask before ordering pencil boxes with window.

Can the window follow the shape of sharpened pencil tips?

Yes. We can cut a zigzag or stepped window that traces the tips, as long as the insert holds the pencils at fixed heights. A straight strip is simpler and more forgiving if the pencils may shift slightly in transit.

Is clear film always fitted over the window?

It is our default because it keeps dust and fingers off the leads. An open cut-out is possible for sets that are shrink-wrapped before sale. We will advise on the proof which suits your packing method.

Will a long window across a 24-pencil box make it flimsy?

It can if the border is too thin. We keep at least 8 mm of board on each side of the window and, on long sets, suggest a heavier board or a window divided by a narrow bar so the panel stays stiff when the box is picked up.

How do I stop pencils sliding about behind the window?

A card insert with slots or a raised bed holds each pencil in place. For flat sets, a simple folded tray with a lip is often enough to keep the row tidy.

Can I print a colour chart inside the lid?

Yes, inside print is available on most styles. Many brands use it for a shade chart, care notes or a small drawing exercise for children.

Which board suits a premium artist set?

A thicker folding board or a hinged lid style with a matt laminate and foil gives a weightier feel. Kraft board with a single ink colour also suits studio and graphite ranges well.

Can the box hang on a peg in a shop?

We can add a header panel with a euro slot. The pencils and insert need to be secure enough that the box hangs straight, so tell us the total weight when you ask for a quote.

Do you make matching boxes for different set sizes?

Yes, and ordering them together is the easiest way to keep window position, borders and colours consistent. We can proof the sizes side by side.

How soon will windowed pencil boxes arrive?

Production runs 4 to 7 working days after you approve the free proof, then free tracked UK mainland delivery usually takes 2 to 3 working days. Order before a school term starts for the best timing.

What if some boxes have the film fitted crooked?

Report any misprint or damage within 10 days of delivery, with a photo if possible, and we will reprint or refund the affected boxes. The rest of the run stays with you.

What does a custom quote need from me?

Pencil length, number per set, preferred box style, finish and rough quantity. If you have a pencil to hand, the measured row width helps us get the insert right first time.
