Why a Card Needs Packaging

A gift card is a strange present. It holds real value, sometimes a lot of it, yet on its own it is a small piece of plastic that looks exactly like a loyalty card. Handing it over loose, or in a small paper envelope, undersells both the gift and your business. The person buying it wants something they can wrap or pass across a dinner table without apology, and the person receiving it wants to feel that some thought went into it.

A printed box or wallet solves that. It gives the card a frame, makes the gift look generous and gives you a branded object that sits on someone's table until the card is used. For many restaurants, spas and boutiques, gift cards are one of the few products bought specifically to give away, so the packaging is effectively their gift-wrap service.

There is a commercial reason too. A gift card that looks good is easier to sell, especially in the weeks before birthdays, weddings and retirements when people are hunting for something quick but thoughtful. Staff can point to a display of boxed cards by the till, and online shoppers can see a photo of the finished pack rather than imagining a bare card arriving in an envelope. Shops that sell cards and vouchers from the same counter also use our greeting card boxes for the same counter.

Boxes, Wallets and Presentation Cases

There are three main formats, each with its own feel. A folding wallet is a printed card cover that opens like a book, with a slot or die-cut corners holding the card inside. It is slim, light and easy to post in an envelope, which suits online gift card sales. A slim tuck box or sleeve-and-tray box adds depth and feels more like a small present; customers often keep it for jewellery or cufflinks afterwards. A rigid presentation case with a magnetic flap is the premium option, used by hotels, jewellers and high-end restaurants where the card may carry a large balance.

You do not have to pick only one. Many businesses keep a simple wallet for everyday sales and a rigid case for higher-value cards or corporate orders, which lets the packaging scale with the gift. A folding format that ships flat and pops into shape is on our foldable gift boxes that ship flat page.

Holding the Card in Place

A standard payment-style card measures 85.6 x 54 mm, and most gift cards follow it. The inside of the box or wallet is built around that size with a cradle that stops the card sliding. Options include four corner slits, a die-cut pocket, a foam-free card insert with a thumb notch, or a small adhesive dot that releases cleanly. A thumb notch is worth having in any rigid box, because a tight card in a smooth recess is surprisingly hard to lift out.

If your gift cards are a non-standard size, such as wooden or metal cards, send us a sample. Thicker cards need a deeper recess and a slightly different insert. Cards with a printed balance or a scratch panel on the back should face the right way when the box opens, so tell us which side you want on show.

Printing That Matches Your Brand

The packaging should look like the business the card is for. A restaurant might print a photograph of its dining room inside the wallet; a spa might choose a calm single colour with a blind-embossed logo; a fashion boutique might use its signature pattern across the lid. Leave room for a short message from the giver, either a printed line such as 'A gift for you' with space below, or a blank panel inside the lid for a personal note.

Some brands print the card's terms, a balance-check web address or opening hours inside the wallet, which saves printing them on the card itself. Keep that text small and tidy so it does not compete with the message. Every order comes with a free design proof showing exactly where everything sits.

Finishes for a Small Premium Box

Because gift card boxes are small, finishing touches make a big difference without adding much cost. Soft-touch lamination gives a velvety surface that feels expensive. Hot foil in gold, silver or rose gold on the logo catches the eye at the till. Spot UV can add a gloss pattern over a matt background. Embossing gives a raised logo that people instinctively run a finger across.

Ribbon pulls on rigid boxes and printed belly bands on wallets add a final gift-wrapped look. For a quieter style, a plain coloured box with a small foil logo is often more elegant than a fully printed one.

Think about how the box will be stored behind the counter too. Slim boxes and wallets stack neatly in a drawer, while rigid cases need shelf space. If staff fill and wrap cards at the till, choose a format they can assemble with one hand while chatting to the customer, and keep the more elaborate cases for orders that are packed in advance. Our foil and soft touch compared guide shows both on a small lid.

Restaurants, Retailers and Corporate Orders

Restaurants and bars sell gift cards over the counter and online, often posting them to the buyer or the recipient. A wallet that fits a standard envelope keeps postage low, while a small box suits cards collected in person. Retail shops tend to display boxed cards near the till, so a box with a hang tab or a counter display tray helps impulse purchases.

Corporate buyers order gift cards in bulk as staff rewards or client thank-yous. For those orders, a rigid case with the client's logo alongside yours, or a wallet with a printed message from the company, turns a transactional gift into a branded one. Ask about splitting a run between two designs if you want corporate and retail versions. Firms gifting cards to clients often choose our corporate gift boxes for client cards with a second logo.

Decide Whether the Card Is Posted or Handed Over

Gift card packaging splits by how the card reaches the recipient. A card posted to a customer needs a slim wallet or a flat box that goes through a letterbox and survives a sorting office; a card handed over at a restaurant till can be a magnetic presentation case with a ribbon pull. Pick the format by that journey first, then tell us the card size, usually 86 x 54 mm, and whether a space for a handwritten message is wanted inside. Choose the finish next, a foil logo on a soft-touch wallet or a wrapped rigid case, and say if two designs are needed, one for retail and one for corporate clients. Artwork is a logo and a colour, sent as vector files, and the free proof shows the inside with the card holder in place. A custom quote comes by email within one working day with wallets and simple boxes from £0.25 and rigid cases quoted per design, and low minimums let you test a format first. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval with free tracked UK mainland delivery. Larger gifts that go with the card are boxed on our presentation boxes for larger gifts page.

Gift Card Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering gift card boxes.

What card size do your boxes fit?

Our standard inserts fit the common 85.6 x 54 mm card size. For other sizes or thick wooden and metal cards, send a sample so we can cut the recess to match.

Which format is cheapest to post?

A folding wallet is the slimmest and fits a standard envelope, which keeps postage low. Boxes and rigid cases are better for counter sales or courier delivery.

Can the giver write a message inside?

Yes. We can leave a blank panel inside the wallet or lid, or print a short greeting with space beneath for a personal note.

How does the card stay in place?

Corner slits, a die-cut pocket or a recessed insert with a thumb notch hold the card securely while still letting it be removed easily. Slits suit wallets; a recessed insert suits rigid cases. We show the holder on the proof.

Can you print terms and conditions inside?

Yes. Small print such as terms, expiry details or a balance-check address can go inside the wallet so the card face stays clean.

Do magnetic cases arrive assembled?

Rigid magnetic cases are supplied made up, ready to use. Folding wallets and tuck boxes are supplied flat.

Can I order two designs, one for corporate clients?

Yes. A run can be split between a retail design and a corporate design, each shown on its own proof.

Can you add a ribbon pull?

Ribbon pulls are available on rigid boxes and trays. They make lifting the tray easy and add a gift-wrapped look.

Will foil look good on a small box?

Foil works especially well on small boxes, where a single logo or line of text becomes the focal point. Keep foil lettering above a sensible minimum size.

Can I get matching envelopes?

Yes. We can supply envelopes sized to your wallets, printed or plain, so cards can be posted or handed over sealed.

What if some cases arrive with marks or misprints?

Photograph the marked or misprinted cases and send the photos within 10 days of delivery, and we reprint or refund the affected items. Rigid cases are packed with paper between them to prevent scuffs. Check a few from each carton on arrival.
