Getting Cans Onto Shelves

A new drinks brand usually has a great can and very little else. Retailers, though, buy in cases, merchandise on shelves and sell multipacks at the till, and each of those steps needs packaging. Energy drink boxes fill that gap: a four-pack carton for the shelf, a counter display tray for the till and a plain or printed shipper to get the stock there.

The carton is also where you make your first impression with a buyer. A sample pack that arrives in a printed four-pack, rather than four loose cans in bubble wrap, looks like a brand that is ready to sell. It tells the buyer you have thought about how the product will look on their shelf.

For direct sales, a well designed multipack box doubles as gift packaging and as a shipping carton for online orders, which keeps stock lines simple for a small team. Soft drinks brands use the same formats as our can boxes for sparkling water.

Formats for Custom Energy Drink Boxes

Most brands need two or three formats, and they work best when designed together.

Designing the formats together saves money. If the four-pack and the shipper share a footprint, six four-packs might fit exactly into one shipper, which makes stock counting easy for retailers and keeps pallets square. We can work out the most efficient multiples when sizing your cartons.

Basket carriers with an open top and a central handle are worth a look if you want shoppers to see the cans themselves. Closed cartons give more print area and protect the cans better from shelf dust.

  • Four-pack carton: closed box or open basket style with a carry handle
  • Six or twelve-can display tray: open-front tray that sits on a counter or shelf
  • Twenty-four can shipper: corrugated outer that protects stock in transit
  • Single-can gift box: for launches, influencer kits and limited editions
  • Mixed flavour pack: one carton with a printed window for each flavour

Board, Strength and Cold Conditions

Cans are heavy for their size, and a four-pack of 500 ml cans weighs over two kilos. Folding boxboard of around 350 to 400 gsm handles a 250 ml four-pack, while larger cans or heavier packs are better in E-flute corrugated, which also cushions the cans and stops dents.

Energy drinks often sit in chillers, where condensation forms on cans and boxes. A gloss or matt lamination, or a water-resistant varnish, protects the print and stops the board softening. If your cartons will be stored in a fridge for long periods, mention it and we will suggest the most resistant option.

Display trays need stiff fronts and well-locked corners, as they are pulled and pushed many times a day. A tear-off front panel lets the tray ship closed and then open on the shelf, saving both packaging and labour for the retailer.

Do not forget the inside of the shipper. A few vertical dividers in a twenty-four can case stop cans rubbing through their printed finish on long journeys, which matters if the cans themselves are your main shelf presence. Our board guide covers board grades for chillers and condensation.

Designing for Fast Recognition

Energy drink shoppers decide quickly. On a crowded shelf, colour and a bold logo do more than any amount of text, so match the box to the can and keep the brand name large on the front and both ends. Flavour names should be easy to see without picking up the pack.

Fluorescent and metallic effects are popular in this category. Metallic foil, or printing on a metallised board, gives the bright, high-energy look many brands want. Spot UV on the logo adds contrast on matt boxes. We can show these effects in the proof so you can see how they sit together.

Remember the information panel. Ingredients, caffeine content and any advisory statements usually appear on the can, but some retailers like key information repeated on multipacks. Your wording should come from your own compliance checks, and we will lay it out clearly. Neon palettes print brightest as fluorescent inks on white board.

Gyms, Shops and Online Orders

Gyms and leisure centres often sell from a small counter display, so a six or twelve-can tray that sits next to the till works well. Convenience shops and independent grocers use four-packs on shelves and shippers in the stockroom. Online sellers ship mixed packs direct to customers, where a strong corrugated mailer with can dividers prevents dents.

Event sampling is another common use. A single-can or two-can box with a printed message makes a launch giveaway feel like a gift rather than a handout, and it gives people a reason to keep and share it.

Retailers in petrol forecourts and convenience chains often work from planograms with fixed shelf heights. If you know the shelf height your stockists use, tell us, as it can affect whether a four-pack stands upright or lies on its side. Online orders travel best in corrugated mailers with can dividers so cans do not dent.

Limited Editions and Collaborations

Energy drink brands rely on new flavours and partnerships to stay visible. A limited flavour in a fresh carton design, a collaboration with a gym chain or an esports team, or a launch pack for a new market all benefit from short print runs that do not leave you with unwanted stock.

Keep the core layout the same across editions. When the logo, carton shape and information panel stay consistent, only the colours and artwork change, and the new pack still looks like part of the family. It also speeds up proofing, because most of the artwork has already been approved.

Collector-minded customers sometimes keep special edition cartons, so a little extra effort on finishes, such as a metallic foil or an inside print, goes a long way on these runs. Collaboration runs often use a printed sleeve over the standard carton instead of a new box.

Pick the Format That Matches Your First Listing

Energy drink packaging is usually ordered in formats, and the order of priority depends on where the first sales come from. A supermarket or convenience listing needs the four-pack carton and the shipper first; a gym route needs the counter display tray; online launches need a single-can gift box and a mailer with can dividers. Send the can dimensions, say whether cans are slim or standard, and list the formats in the order you need them, because quoting them together keeps the artwork consistent even if they are produced in stages. Chilled cabinets need a laminated or varnished board, and a printed sleeve for a limited edition lets a collaboration run on the same carton.

A custom quote comes by email within one working day, and the free proof shows each format with the artwork in place. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval, boxes arrive flat by tracked courier to UK mainland addresses, and misprints or damage reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded.

Energy Drink Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering energy drink boxes.

Can one four-pack carton fit both slim and standard cans?

Usually not, as the diameters differ. We can design two cartons with a shared design, or a carton with inserts that adapt to the can size.

Will the carton survive in a chiller?

With a lamination or water-resistant varnish, cartons cope well with chiller condensation. Let us know if they will sit in a fridge for long periods.

Do you print fluorescent or neon colours?

Fluorescent inks are available on request and suit energy drink branding. They look brightest on white board and are shown in the proof.

Can a display tray ship closed and open on the shelf?

Yes. A tear-off front panel lets the tray travel closed and turn into a display with one pull.

How do I stop cans denting when posted?

Use a corrugated mailer with can dividers so the cans do not knock together. Individual can slots spread the load and stop dents.

Can you add our nutrition panel to the box?

Yes, we lay out any information you provide. The wording and figures should come from your own compliance checks.

Is a carry handle strong enough for four large cans?

Yes, when the carton is made from the right board. We use corrugated or heavy boxboard and reinforce the handle area for heavier packs.

Can I make a mixed flavour pack?

Yes. A carton with windows or printed panels for each flavour suits mixed packs and taster boxes.

What should a start-up order first?

Usually a four-pack carton and a matching shipper, then a display tray once you have gym or counter listings. We can quote all three so you can plan.

Can I get a launch gift box in a short run?

Yes, minimums are quoted per job. A small run of single-can gift boxes suits influencer kits and launch events.
