The Trouble With Packing Dumplings

Dumplings are delicate in a way that most takeaway food is not. Steamed momos and dim sum have thin wrappers that tear if they are squashed or stuck to the box. Pan-fried gyoza have a crisp base that softens quickly when trapped steam condenses on the lid. And almost every dumpling order comes with a sauce that needs somewhere to go other than the bottom of the box.

A generic takeaway container usually fails on at least one of these points. Dumplings pile into a heap, steam builds up, the crisp bottoms go limp and the sauce pot tips. A box designed for dumplings deals with each problem in turn, so the food arrives looking as good as it did on the pass.

Delivery apps add another layer of difficulty. A rider may carry your order alongside several others, the bag may be tilted on a bike and the journey can take longer than expected on a busy evening. Packaging that keeps dumplings in their places and sauce in its pot protects your ratings on those apps as much as it protects the food. Rice and curry orders from the same kitchen go in our printed food boxes for takeaways, which stack with these trays.

Box and Tray Styles for Custom Dumpling Boxes

A divided tray with individual pockets keeps each dumpling apart, which stops wrappers sticking together and makes the order look neat when opened. A shallow, rectangular box with a hinged lid holds a row of gyoza flat, with the crisp side down. Pail-style boxes with a wire-free fold-over top work for mixed orders and street food stalls. Bao boxes need more height for the fluffy buns and work well with a window lid.

Many kitchens use a small tray inside an outer sleeve or carton, so the tray stays clean and the sleeve carries the branding. A built-in compartment or a separate printed pot holds dipping sauce or chilli oil.

If you sell a mixed platter, such as steamed and fried dumplings with a side of rice or slaw, a box with two or three separate sections keeps textures apart. Crisp items stay away from steamed ones, and wet sides cannot seep into the wrappers. Party platters of several dozen pieces are sized on the catering boxes for platters page.

Keeping Steam Under Control

Steam is the enemy of a good dumpling delivery. A few small vent holes in the lid or side let moisture escape without letting the food go cold too quickly. For pan-fried dumplings, venting is especially important, because the crisp base will soften within minutes if the box is sealed tightly.

Lining the base with a small grease-resistant sheet or using a board with a grease-resistant coating keeps oil from soaking through and stops the dumplings from sticking. If the dumplings will travel for more than a short distance, a slightly larger box with space around each dumpling helps air circulate.

Packing order matters too. Letting freshly fried gyoza rest for a few seconds before the lid goes on, and placing the sauce pot last so it sits upright, makes a noticeable difference to how the box arrives. A box with a clearly marked sauce position helps new staff get this right during a rush. Fried sides sold beside dumplings use the same vents in our vented fast food boxes.

Board and Grease Resistance

Dumpling boxes are made from folding board or thin corrugated board with a grease-resistant coating. White board gives bright print, while kraft board has a natural look that suits street food and casual restaurants. Food-contact grade board is available on request for trays and boxes where dumplings sit directly on the board.

Corrugated board adds insulation and stiffness for larger orders and for delivery boxes stacked in a rider's bag. For dine-in or counter service, a lighter folding board tray is usually enough.

Stack strength is easy to overlook. On a busy night, finished orders are often stacked three or four high on the pass waiting for collection. A flimsy lid that bows under the weight of the box above will press onto the dumplings, so a slightly stiffer board for larger portions is money well spent.

Sizing by Portion

Think in portions rather than dimensions. How many dumplings make a standard order, and how big is each one? A typical momo or gyoza is roughly 60 to 80 mm long. A box of six in a row needs a length of around 250 mm, while a box of eight in two rows is shorter but wider. Bao need roughly 90 to 100 mm per bun in each direction and around 60 mm of height.

Send us your portion sizes and a sample dumpling or two if possible. We will suggest a box for each portion so your kitchen can pack quickly without squashing.

For catering orders and party platters, a larger tray with a fitted lid can hold several dozen dumplings in neat rows, with a separate pot or two of sauce. These are usually ordered in smaller quantities, so it often makes sense to add them to the same job as your everyday boxes. Our guide to sizing boxes by portion works through rows and layers.

Branding Your Takeaway

A printed dumpling box makes your restaurant recognisable at the door and on social media, where dumplings are a popular subject. Bold, simple graphics, your logo and a short line about your food work well. Many restaurants include a QR code on the lid that links to their menu or ordering page.

Printing inside the lid is a nice surprise when the box is opened, for example a pattern, a short message or instructions for the dipping sauce. Keep printing away from the vent holes and fold lines so it stays sharp.

Consistency helps customers recognise you. Use the same colours and logo on your boxes, sauce pots, bags and menu so a delivery arriving at the door instantly says who it is from. Even a single colour print on kraft can carry that identity if the logo is strong. Bags and sauce pots in matching colours sit under food and takeaway packaging.

Send Two Dumplings and Your Portion Sizes

Dumpling boxes are sized by portion, so tell us how many momos, gyoza or bao make a standard order and post a couple of each if you can. A gyoza at 70 mm long sets a six-in-a-row box at about 250 mm; eight momos in two rows give a shorter, wider tray; two bao need around 200 x 100 mm with 70 mm of height. Say which items are pan-fried, because those boxes get vents in the lid, and mark where the sauce pot should sit so the proof can print a position for it.

Choose kraft or white board and tell us if dumplings will sit directly on the board, so the tray can be food-contact grade on request. A custom quote comes back by email within one working day, with minimums quoted per job. The free proof shows the box, the vents and the print positions. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval and tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses is free, taking 2–3 working days. Misprinted or damaged boxes reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Kitchens that run a noodle line as well usually order noodle boxes in the same print at the same time.

Dumpling Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering dumpling boxes.

How do I stop dumplings sticking together?

Use a divided tray with a pocket for each dumpling, or a liner under a single row. Keeping them apart stops wrappers tearing.

Will pan-fried gyoza stay crisp?

Vents in the lid let steam escape, which keeps the base crisp for longer. A sealed box will soften them quickly.

Can the box include a sauce compartment?

Yes. A built-in compartment or a matching printed sauce pot keeps dipping sauce separate. The pot position is marked on the proof so staff place it last and upright.

Will chilli oil soak through the base on a long delivery?

Not through the grease-resistant coating, which is why we use it on every dumpling tray. For orders that travel more than about twenty minutes, a greaseproof liner under the dumplings adds a second barrier. Keep the chilli oil in a lidded pot rather than poured over before the lid goes on.

Can the dumplings sit directly on the board?

Board suitable for direct food contact can be supplied on request. Mention it in your enquiry.

What size box do I need for bao?

Bao need roughly 90 to 100 mm per bun and around 60 mm of height. A two-bun box is often about 200 x 100 x 70 mm.

Can I add a QR code for ordering?

Yes. A QR code on the lid can link to your menu or ordering page. We keep it clear of the vents and fold lines so it scans first time.

Kraft or white board, which suits street food?

Kraft gives a natural look that suits street food. White board gives brighter colours for bold branding.

Can you add a slot for chopsticks?

Yes. A small slot or tab on the lid can hold a pair of disposable chopsticks. It saves a rider forgetting them at the door.

What if boxes arrive with vents in the wrong place?

If boxes made to your approved proof arrive faulty, misprinted or damaged, tell us within 10 days and we will reprint or refund. Vent positions are drawn on the proof, so check them against your lid print before approving.
