What Spot UV Adds to a Table Tent

Spot UV is a clear, glossy coating applied only to selected parts of a printed design. On a matte laminated card, those parts shine, while the rest of the surface stays soft and flat. The contrast makes the coated areas look slightly raised and very rich, a little like a wet-look gloss on the image.

On a table tent, that effect works especially well in low light. Bars and lounges are often dimly lit, with candles, pendant lamps and coloured lights. As guests move, the glossy areas pick up those lights and draw attention to exactly what you want them to see: the cocktail of the week, the logo, a price-free headline or a drinks photo.

There is a tactile side to it as well. Guests pick up table tents, turn them over and put them down again. The difference between the soft matte surface and the smooth, slightly raised gloss is something people notice with their fingers as much as their eyes, and it quietly signals that the venue cares about detail. Brands often pair them with printed table tents so the whole order arrives in one look.

Where to Use the Gloss

Spot UV works best when it is used sparingly. Highlighting everything makes nothing catch the eye, and the print and finish options compared page shows why. Choose one or two elements per side: a logo and a hero image, or a headline and a few drink names. Photographs of cocktails with ice, citrus and glassware look particularly good with gloss, because the coating makes them look wet and fresh.

Patterns are another option. A subtle repeating pattern in clear gloss over a dark matte background is invisible from a distance but appears as the tent catches the light, which gives a premium, understated effect.

A useful test is to print your design on plain paper and circle the parts you want people to notice first. If you circle more than two things on a side, choose again. The gloss is a spotlight, and a spotlight only works when most of the stage stays in shadow.

Spot UV Table Tents in Different Shapes

The standard table tent is a folded card that stands as an inverted V, printed on both faces so it reads from either side of the table. A three-sided tent forms a triangle, giving three panels that can be read from anywhere around a round table, like our restaurant table tents. Tents with a base flap or a slot-in foot stand more firmly on uneven bar tops.

Most bars use an A6 or A5 tent for tables and a larger A4 tent on the bar or by the entrance. A narrow DL tent suits long, thin tables and counters where space is tight.

If you want to change the content often, a reusable acrylic holder with a printed insert is one option. But for most venues, printed card tents with spot UV look much better and are cheap enough to replace when the menu changes.

Card, Laminate and Durability

Spot UV needs a smooth, coated surface underneath, so table tents are usually printed on heavy silk card and then laminated with a matte or soft-touch film. The laminate protects the print from spills, condensation and wiping, while the spot UV sits on top; the board and card types guide lists the card weights. Thicker card stands up better and does not bow in warm rooms.

Drinks get spilled on bar tables, and tents get moved, knocked and wiped many times a night. Matte laminate wipes clean with a damp cloth, which keeps the tent looking fresh for longer. Soft-touch laminate feels velvety and premium, though it shows fingerprints a little more.

How long a tent lasts depends on the venue. A quiet hotel lounge might keep the same set on the tables for months, while a busy cocktail bar with sticky tables might replace them every few weeks. Ordering a few extra of each design means you can swap out a tired tent straight away rather than leaving a stained one on a table.

Designing for a Dark Room

Bars are not well lit, so a table tent needs larger text than a printed menu. Use a short headline, a few drink names and a single strong image per side, as on a laminated bar menu. Dark backgrounds with light text look stylish but must have enough contrast to be readable in low light. Bright colours glow nicely against a dark matte base.

Keep each side focused. One side might promote a featured cocktail, the other a happy hour or an event night. If you have a full drinks menu, the tent can simply point guests to it with a QR code. QR codes should be printed in solid colour without spot UV over them, as gloss can reflect light into the phone camera and make scanning harder.

Our proof shows the spot UV areas as a separate layer, so you can see exactly where the gloss will fall before anything is printed.

Who Uses Them

Cocktail bars, hotel lounges, wine bars and members' clubs are the main users, because they want promotional material that matches the feel of the room. Restaurants use them to promote dessert menus and wine pairings, often beside larger A4 table tents at the entrance. Event venues and hotels place them at conference tables, wedding receptions and private dining rooms. Drinks brands also supply them to bars as part of a promotion for a new spirit or mixer.

The common thread is a setting where print needs to look as polished as the décor. A plain glossy tent can look cheap next to good furniture and lighting; a matte tent with spot UV looks considered.

Cafés that turn into bars in the evening find them useful too. A tent with the daytime menu on one side and the evening cocktail list on the other can simply be turned around at the changeover, saving staff from swapping printed material on every table.

Mark the Gloss Areas on a Separate Layer Before Sending Artwork

Spot UV is a second pass over the print, so it needs its own instructions. Open your artwork, add a layer and fill the areas you want glossy in solid black, usually the logo and one image per side; if that is awkward, describe the areas in words and we draw the layer. Keep QR codes out of the gloss, because reflections stop phones reading them. Then choose the size by the table, A6 or A5 for a bar table and A4 for the bar top, and the laminate under the gloss, soft-touch for feel or matte for fewer fingerprints.

Tell us the size, the number of panels, the quantity and send the artwork with the spot UV layer, and a custom quote lands in your inbox within one working day, minimums low and quoted per job so a single promotion is fine. A free proof shows the artwork and the gloss layer together. Printing takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and free tracked delivery reaches UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days. Bars that change offers weekly often add plain printed table tent cards for the short-run messages.

Spot UV Table Tents Questions

What buyers ask before ordering spot UV table tents.

What exactly is spot UV?

Spot UV is a clear gloss coating applied to chosen areas of a printed design. On a matte card, those areas shine and look slightly raised. It highlights logos, images and headlines.

Should I put spot UV on the whole design?

No, it works best on one or two elements per side. Too much gloss loses the contrast that makes it work. Logos and drink photos are the most popular choices.

Can I put spot UV over a QR code?

We advise against it, because gloss can reflect light into the phone camera. Leave QR codes in plain matte print. They scan more reliably that way.

Will the tents survive spills?

The laminate under the spot UV protects the print and wipes clean with a damp cloth. Thick card resists bending. Heavy spills left to soak may still mark the edges.

Which size tent suits a bar table?

A6 and A5 tents suit most bar and lounge tables. A4 tents are better for the bar top or entrance. Narrow DL tents work on long, slim tables.

Can I have a three-sided tent?

Yes, a triangle tent shows three panels and suits round tables. Each panel can carry different content. It stands firmly without a separate base.

How do I mark the spot UV areas in my file?

Supply a separate layer or file with the areas in solid black. If that is difficult, describe what to highlight and we will create the layer. The proof shows the result.

Is soft-touch better than matte?

Soft-touch feels velvety and premium, while matte is slightly more practical as it shows fewer fingerprints. Both show spot UV well. Choose based on the feel of your venue.

Can drinks brands order tents for several bars?

Yes, brands often supply tents to a group of venues for a promotion. A single design can be printed in larger quantities. Ask for pricing on each quantity.

Do the tents arrive folded?

They arrive creased and flat, ready to fold along the scored lines. Folding takes a second and the crease keeps the shape. Flat tents also store easily.
