Sizes and Handles

Gable boxes are measured by the base footprint and the height up to the shoulder where the gable begins, plus the height of the peak. A small box around 90 x 60 mm on the base holds a single portion bag; the guide to measuring your product explains how to allow for the gable. Larger boxes around 150 x 90 mm hold a family-size bag or a full breakfast kit.

The handle is cut into the top panels and reinforced by the double layer of board where the panels meet. For heavier kits we can add a slightly wider handle or a heavier board so the box does not tear when carried. A handle that is comfortable for a child's hand is a little wider and has rounded edges.

If your box will be stacked in a display, we can make the peak lower so boxes sit more neatly in rows.

Height is worth thinking about carefully. A box that is too tall for its contents leaves a gap at the top, and the inner bag slumps to one side when carried. Measuring the filled inner bag, rather than the empty one, gives a far more accurate box height.

Board and Food Contact

Most gable cereal boxes are made from white folding board, which prints bright colours and stands up well when carried. Kraft board gives a natural look for organic granola and muesli brands, as it does on our porridge oat boxes. Because the cereal normally sits in an inner bag, the box itself does not usually need special coatings, but food-contact grade board is available on request if loose cereal or snacks will touch the board.

If the box will hold heavier items like a jar of honey or a milk carton, a heavier board weight or a crash-lock base keeps the bottom from sagging.

Board weight also changes how the box feels in the hand. A thin board flexes when the handle takes the load, which makes the peak bend and the box tilt. A slightly heavier board keeps the gable upright and the box hanging straight, which looks much better at a party or a hotel breakfast table.

Designing for Children and for Gifts

Children's breakfast boxes work best when the design is playful: characters, bright colours, a simple game on the side panels or a maze on the back. The handle area can carry a character's face so the box looks like a creature with a handle for a hat, and the print and finish options compared page shows which laminate keeps small hands from marking it. Keep text simple and large.

For gift sets, a calmer design works better. A strong brand colour, a clear product name and a ribbon or sticker on the handle feel more like a present. Print the inside of the gable panels with a message that is revealed when the box opens.

Remember the back panel for allergen and ingredient information if the kit contains food. Even when inner bags carry their own labels, many brands repeat key details on the outer box.

If the same box is used for different kits, a blank panel on the side lets you apply a small label naming the contents, so one print run covers several products.

Pack the Inner Bag and the Extras First, Then Measure the Bundle

A gable cereal box is sized from the bundle inside it, so pack it before you measure anything: the sealed cereal bag, the topping pot, the spoon or the toy, arranged as they will sit. Measure the footprint and the height to the top of the tallest item, and weigh it, because the handle sits in a double layer of board and a heavy kit may need a wider handle or a heavier grade. Decide whether the box needs a window, whether the peak should be low so rows stack neatly, and whether loose cereal will touch the board, which calls for food-contact grade board, available on request.
