What Jerky Asks of Its Packaging

Jerky is a dry product, but it is not a forgiving one. Let in too much air and the strips harden and lose their aroma; let in moisture and they soften and spoil. The oils from marinades will also find their way through a weak film and mark the print. That is why jerky is almost always packed in multi-layer laminated pouches rather than single-layer bags.

A typical jerky bag combines an outer printed layer, a barrier layer such as metallised film or foil, and an inner sealing layer. Many brands also add an oxygen absorber sachet inside the pack. Our bags are made with enough headspace to fit that sachet without crowding the product. Producers who also sell dried fruit often order printed dried fruit boxes to sit on the same shelf.

Choosing a Bag Style

The stand-up pouch is the most common choice for jerky because it sits upright on a shelf and gives you a large front panel. A flat three-side-seal bag is better for single-serve packs sold at tills, in gym fridges and in multipacks. Side-gusset bags suit larger sharing packs where the product is heavy and you want a block shape.

Jerky is a popular gift for people who are hard to buy for, and a lot of brands sell mixed-flavour bundles online. For those, a set of smaller matching bags packed into a printed mailer looks generous and lets the buyer try every flavour. A tasting pack of four or five sample bags is also a cheap way to win repeat customers, because it encourages people to come back for a full bag of the one they liked best.

Online orders travel through sorting machines, so choose a film with enough stiffness to resist punctures from the sharp corners of dried meat. Our laminates are chosen with that in mind, and a gusseted base helps spread the weight. Many brands settle on kraft stand-up pouches with zips for a natural, handmade look on the counter.

Sizing Jerky Bags by Weight

Jerky is light for its volume, so a 50 g pack takes up more room than you might expect. Thick-cut beef and biltong slices need a wider bag than thin teriyaki strips, and mushroom or soy jerky tends to be bulkier again. The simplest way to size the pouch is to fill a sample bag by hand with your target weight, then measure the width and the filled height.

Leave room above the product for the zip and the heat seal, plus a few millimetres so the zip can close without catching on a strip. If you are unsure, send us a pack you already use or tell us the weight and cut, and we will suggest a size. For larger sharing packs, quad seal pouches with flat bases stand squarer and hold more weight.

Films, Windows and Zips

Metallised and foil laminates give the strongest barrier and a bold finish. Kraft-look outer layers are popular with craft and farm-shop brands, while a clear window lets shoppers see the marbling and texture of the meat. A window does reduce the barrier slightly, so we usually keep it modest in size and combine it with an inner barrier layer.

A press-to-close zip is close to essential for jerky, because most people do not finish a bag in one go. Tear notches above the zip make the first opening clean. If you sell spicy and mild ranges side by side, matching bags in different colours help shoppers find their favourite flavour quickly. Snack makers with a wider range can compare these films with our printed custom snack bags.

  • Matte, gloss or soft-touch outer film
  • Clear or frosted window panels
  • Press-to-close zip with tear notch
  • Rounded corners for a neater feel in the hand

Printing Custom Jerky Bags That Sell

Jerky shoppers tend to read the back of the pack: protein per serving, ingredients, allergens and the cut of meat. Leave room on the back panel for that information and keep the front panel for the flavour name, the brand and one strong visual. Bold type in a high-contrast colour reads well from across the aisle.

Digital printing works well for brands with lots of flavours in smaller runs, because each design can be printed without separate plates. Larger runs of a single flavour can move to plate printing for a lower unit price. Either way we send a free proof first, showing your artwork on the bag dieline with seal areas marked, so nothing important sits in a seal.

Do check your label wording against current food labelling rules before you approve the proof. We print exactly what you send, so the nutrition table, best-before area and allergen highlights must be right in your file.

Filling, Sealing and Storing Your Bags

Most small jerky makers fill bags by hand and close them on a band or impulse heat sealer. Seal just above the zip, on the strip of film we leave clear for that purpose, and test a few bags from the first carton on your own sealer before running a full batch. Different machines like slightly different temperatures, and a quick test avoids weak seals that open in transit.

Brands using a filling line should send us the machine specification, as some lines need a particular film thickness, a set distance between the zip and the top seal, or a straight edge for gripping. We can match those details on the dieline before the proof stage.

Store empty bags flat, away from direct sunlight and heat, in their outer cartons until they are needed. Film that sits next to a radiator can curl or pick up dust on the sealing layer, which makes sealing harder. Keeping a rolling stock of a few weeks' worth is usually enough for a growing brand. Jerky sits within our snack, cereal and popcorn packaging range, where you will find bags and boxes for other lines.

From Quote to Delivery

Tell us the bag style, size or pack weight, the number of flavours and the quantity of each. You will have a custom quote by email within one working day, with prices from £0.25 per bag depending on size, film and quantity. Minimums are low and set per job, which suits brands testing a new flavour.

After you approve the proof, production takes 4 to 7 working days, followed by free tracked delivery across the UK mainland in 2 to 3 working days. Any bags that arrive misprinted or damaged can be reported within 10 days for a reprint or refund. Food-contact grade films are available on request, and we can share the film details with your quality lead.

Jerky Bags Questions

What buyers ask before ordering jerky bags.

Which film keeps jerky freshest?

Foil and metallised laminates give the strongest barrier against air and moisture. Many brands pair them with an oxygen absorber sachet inside the bag. If you want a window, we keep it small and use a high-barrier clear film for that panel.

Do jerky bags need a zip?

Most jerky is eaten over more than one sitting, so a press-to-close zip helps keep the rest of the pack fresh. Single-serve packs at tills often skip the zip to save cost. We can quote both so you can decide by pack size.

How do I pick the right bag size for 70 g of jerky?

Fill a sample bag by hand with 70 g of your actual cut and measure the width and the filled height. Thicker cuts and plant-based jerky need more room. If you send us a pack you use now, we can match or improve on it.

Will marinade oils mark the printed outside?

A laminated bag keeps the print on an outer layer separated from the product by barrier and sealing layers, so oils should not reach the artwork. Single-layer bags are more likely to show staining. We recommend laminated films for any marinated jerky.

Can I have a clear window to show the meat?

Yes, windows are popular for jerky because the texture sells the product. We usually keep the window to part of the front panel so the barrier stays strong. Frosted windows are an option if you want a softer look.

Can I print several flavours in one order?

Yes, digital printing lets each flavour have its own design in a single order. The quote shows the price for each design and quantity. Many brands use the same layout with a different colour per flavour.

Can I fit an oxygen absorber in the bag?

Yes, we allow a little extra headspace for a sachet when you tell us you use one. The sachet sits at the bottom or side without pressing against the zip. Let us know its size when you ask for a quote.

Do you check my nutrition panel?

We check that the artwork prints clearly and sits outside the seal areas, but we do not check the legal content of food labels. Please have your labelling checked before you approve the proof. We print the file exactly as approved.

Are the films suitable for direct food contact?

Food-contact grade films are available on request for jerky and other dried snacks. Mention it in your enquiry and we will specify the right inner layer. We can also share film details for your own records.

Can I add a hang hole for counter displays?

Yes, a round or euro-slot hang hole can be punched above the seal. It lets you hang packs on peg hooks near the till. We position it so it does not cut through your artwork.

How soon can I have bags for a new flavour launch?

Once the free proof is approved, production takes 4 to 7 working days. Free tracked UK mainland delivery follows in 2 to 3 working days. Getting the artwork right first time is the quickest way to save days.
