Custom Cinema Popcorn Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Few pieces of packaging say 'film night' as instantly as a tall, flared popcorn box. Custom cinema popcorn boxes bring that classic shape to independent screens, community film clubs, events and gift sets, printed with your own name in place of the generic red and white.

The Shape Everyone Recognises

The traditional cinema popcorn box is taller than it is wide, with a flared top that makes the popcorn heap up invitingly and a narrower base that fits a hand and a cup holder. The open top means people can dig in without fumbling with a lid in the dark, and the box is light enough to balance on a knee through a long film.

That familiarity is useful. Customers know what they are getting before they have read a word, so you can use the print to tell them who you are rather than what the box contains. An independent cinema with its own popcorn box feels more like a place with character and less like a franchise, and the box often goes home as a small souvenir.

The same shape works outside cinemas too. Village halls running film nights, schools hosting a movie evening, and companies holding outdoor screenings all use it to set the mood straight away. The red and white version of that shape is on our classic striped popcorn boxes page.

Formats for Screens Big and Small

We make cinema popcorn boxes in a few variations depending on how they will be filled and served.

  • Flat-packed open-top box: folds up from a flat blank with a locking base. Stores easily and suits most cinemas and kiosks.
  • Tapered box with glued base: pre-formed and ready to fill, faster at busy counters.
  • Gusseted scoop box: a box with a scooped front that makes filling from a popcorn machine quicker.
  • Lidded movie night box: a closed version with a tuck lid, ideal for home cinema gift sets and posting.
  • Combo tray: a carry tray that holds a popcorn box and drinks together.

Sizes, Portions and Buttered Popcorn

Cinemas usually sell popcorn in three sizes, and the boxes need to look clearly different on the counter so customers can see the value of upgrading. A small box might hold a modest single serving for a child; a large one is often shared between two. Keep the same design across all three so the range looks unified.

Rather than measuring in millimetres alone, think in volume. Fill a jug or measuring container with popcorn to the amount you want to serve for each size, then match it to a box height and top opening. We can suggest dimensions that hit your target portions while staying stable and not too tall to handle in a dark auditorium.

Check that the base fits your seat cup holders if you have them. A box that sits neatly in a holder is less likely to end up spilled across the floor.

Plain salted or sweet popcorn barely marks the board, but buttered or caramel popcorn is a different story. Butter seeps into uncoated board and shows through the print, and caramel can stick to the inside. A grease-resistant board stops oil from reaching the outer surface and keeps your design looking clean until the last kernel is gone.

Food-contact grade board is available on request for boxes filled straight from the machine. We note the board grade on your quote so you can keep it with your food hygiene records.

If you sell gourmet flavours, such as truffle oil, cheese or chilli, a grease-resistant board is well worth the small extra cost. Sharing portions for two or three people usually move to our popcorn buckets for sharing portions.

Making the Counter Run Faster

A popcorn counter in the ten minutes before a film starts is one of the busiest places in hospitality. Boxes that are already folded and stacked by size beside the machine save precious seconds per customer, so many cinemas fold a batch during quieter afternoon screenings. Pre-glued boxes remove that step entirely and are worth considering if your queues are long.

Colour coding helps staff as much as customers. A small printed size letter on the base or a different coloured band for small, medium and large means nobody has to compare boxes side by side to pick the right one in a hurry. It also makes it easy to count stock at the end of the night and spot which size is running low.

Finally, think about where the empty boxes end up. A clear bin near the exit, and a box that collapses easily when squeezed, makes cleaning the screen between showings much quicker for your team. Children's screenings often use the smaller mini popcorn boxes for kids, which are quicker to fill.

Designing a Box People Keep

The classic red and white stripe is famous for a reason, but it is not compulsory. Independent cinemas often use their own colours, a hand-drawn illustration of the building, or a pattern inspired by an old ticket or poster. Film clubs might print the coming programme on the side, and event organisers sometimes print the film title and date for a one-off screening.

Because the box is tall and narrow, a strong vertical design reads best. Put your name near the top where it can be seen above the popcorn, and use the back panel for your website, upcoming events or a loyalty offer.

A printed message inside the base, revealed when the popcorn runs out, is a fun touch that people remember and share. How varnish and lamination behave under kiosk lighting is covered in our comparison of varnish and lamination.

Movie Night Gift Sets

Home cinema has become a gift category of its own, and popcorn boxes are at its heart. Gift companies and online shops put together sets with popcorn kernels or ready-made popcorn, sweets, drinks and sometimes a film voucher, packed into a larger hamper with a few printed popcorn boxes.

For these, a lidded popcorn box or a flat-packed set of open boxes tied with a band works well. Printing them in your brand colours, rather than generic stripes, makes the set feel complete and gives you a chance to tell people where to buy more.

We can also make the outer gift box and a card insert to hold everything in place. Boxes that are not flared, such as cubes and scoops, are on our popcorn boxes in other shapes page.

Fill a Sample Box From Your Own Machine

Popcorn volume is deceptive, so the best way to size a flared box is to scoop from your own machine into a paper cup of known volume and see how many scoops make a small, a medium and a large. Those three volumes become the three box sizes, and the quote is accurate from the start. If you serve buttered or flavoured popcorn, say so, because the grease-resistant board is specified at the quoting stage. Decide pre-glued or flat-packed by counter space: flat boxes store in a drawer, formed boxes nest on a shelf. Artwork reads best as a strong vertical design on the front face with the venue name near the top, sent as a vector file. The quote comes by email within one working day, the proof is free and shows the design on each size, production takes 4–7 working days after approval and UK mainland delivery is free and tracked. Pick-and-mix counters at the same venue use our paper snack cones for sweets.

Cinema Popcorn Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering cinema popcorn boxes.

Do I have to use red and white stripes?

Not at all. Many independent cinemas use their own brand colours or illustrations. Stripes are just one option.

Does butter from the machine mark a cinema popcorn box?

On plain board it can, leaving dark patches on the outside print within minutes. Grease-resistant board keeps butter and oil on the inside face so the stripes stay clean. Tell us you serve buttered popcorn and we specify it on the quote.

How do I choose small, medium and large sizes?

Measure the volume of popcorn you want to serve for each, then we match it to a box height and opening. Keep the design the same across sizes.

Will the boxes fit cinema cup holders?

We can size the base to fit standard seat cup holders. Send us the holder diameter and we will check it on the proof.

Do flared popcorn boxes arrive flat or pre-formed?

Flat-packed styles arrive flat and fold up at the counter in a few seconds. Pre-glued tapered boxes arrive formed and nest inside one another, which is faster at a busy kiosk but needs more shelf space. Both are shown on the quote so you can choose.

Can I print a film title for a one-off screening?

Yes. A special print run for a premiere, festival or charity screening is a lovely keepsake for the audience.

Can I get lidded popcorn boxes for gift sets?

Yes. A tuck lid version keeps popcorn fresh and makes the box suitable for posting in movie night hampers.

Is the board suitable for filling straight from the machine?

Yes, food-contact grade board is available on request for boxes filled straight from the popper. Ask for it when you request the quote and it is noted on the specification. The grease-resistant coating is applied to the same inside face.

What does a custom cinema popcorn box cost?

Simpler flat-packed boxes start from £0.25 on larger runs. Prices depend on size, print and board, so we quote each order.

Can I order boxes in time for a film club screening?

Production takes 4–7 working days after proof approval, and free tracked delivery to the UK mainland follows in 2–3 working days. Approve your proof a couple of weeks before the event and you will have time to spare.
