Storage That Is Meant to Be Opened

A shipping box is sealed once and opened once. A storage box is opened and closed again and again, often for years. That changes what matters. The lid needs to lift off easily and sit back square. The corners need to resist crushing when boxes are stacked several high. Hand holes need to be strong enough to carry a full load without tearing.

Our storage boxes are built for that repeated use. Most are two-piece designs, a base and a full or partial lid, folded from corrugated board that holds its shape when filled. Some come with built-in handles, others with a flip-top lid hinged at the back.

Because they fold flat until needed, you can keep a supply in a cupboard and make them up as a project grows, rather than storing empty boxes.

They are also kinder to the people lifting them. A well-sized storage box with proper hand holes encourages sensible loads, whereas an oversized carton tends to be overfilled and becomes awkward and heavy to carry down from a shelf. p3 Boxes that are carried more than they are stacked are usually better as cardboard boxes with built-in handles.

Archive, Stockroom or Home

Different settings call for slightly different boxes. Office archives need boxes that take A4 or foolscap files standing upright, with a clear label panel on the end so a box can be found without pulling it off the shelf. Stockrooms need boxes sized to the products they hold, often with a printed grid where staff can write contents and counts.

Home and lifestyle brands sell storage boxes as products in their own right: printed with patterns, in neutral colours or matched to a room scheme. These need a cleaner finish and often a more decorative lid.

Removal and self-storage businesses supply storage boxes to customers moving house or clearing space, where a strong box with handles and a branded print doubles as advertising when it sits in someone's loft.

Matching box sizes across a whole room pays off. Shelving looks tidier, lids are interchangeable and staff stop hunting for the right lid for the right base. Choosing two or three standard sizes is usually enough for an office or stockroom. p3 The lidded cardboard boxes page shows full and partial lid styles for each setting.

Board Grades and Stacking Strength

Single wall corrugated board suits light to medium loads such as documents, clothing and small parts. It is light, folds easily and is the economical choice for large quantities.

Double wall board is the right pick for heavy loads or tall stacks: files packed tight, trade equipment, tins and jars. It resists crushing and side bulge, which keeps stacks upright and stops lids being forced off by the weight above.

Ask yourself how high the boxes will be stacked and what is going in the bottom box. That bottom box carries everything above it, so size the board to that worst case, not to the average.

Handles, Lids and Labels

Die-cut hand holes are the simplest way to make a box easier to lift. Reinforced hand holes, with a doubled board layer around the cut, stop tearing on heavy archive boxes. For lighter boxes, a pull tab on the lid makes it easier to lift off.

A full-depth lid covers the whole base and gives maximum protection from dust, while a shallow lid uses less board and is quicker to lift. Flip-top lids hinged to the base suit boxes that sit on open shelves and are opened often.

Printed label panels on the ends and front make the box useful from day one. A simple ruled area for contents, date and owner, printed in one colour, saves buying separate labels.

Dividers turn a single box into a small filing system. Card partitions keep parts, samples or accessories apart, which is especially handy for tradespeople and retailers storing small items that would otherwise end up in a jumble.

Print That Suits a Storage Box

Business storage boxes tend to carry a logo and label panel in one colour on kraft or white board, which is economical and easy to read. Retail storage boxes are printed more decoratively, sometimes all over with a pattern or a brand illustration.

If the boxes will sit on open shelving in a shop, office reception or showroom, print the end panel more carefully than the sides, because that is the face people see. For removal boxes, print a large logo and phone number on several faces, so the brand is visible however boxes are stacked in a van or a hallway.

For archive boxes, a bold box number printed or written on the end in large type saves time later. Many offices keep a simple spreadsheet linking each number to its contents, and the box itself only needs to show the number clearly. p2 Retail versions with all-over pattern are closer to our decorative storage boxes for the home.

Who Orders Branded Storage Boxes

Solicitors, accountants and medical practices store archived files. Retailers and wholesalers keep backstock and reserve stock organised in labelled boxes. Removal companies, self-storage operators and estate agents supply them to customers. Home organising businesses and interiors brands sell them as finished products.

Schools and nurseries use them for classroom resources, and charities and community groups store event equipment and donations in sturdy labelled boxes.

Photographers, crafters and small online sellers also buy them to keep props, materials and stock organised in a spare room, where a matching set of printed boxes makes a cramped space feel more like a studio. p2 Businesses that keep very large items in storage move up to large cardboard boxes in double wall.

Measure the Shelf Before the Box

Storage boxes live on shelving, so the most useful figures you can send are the shelf depth, the gap between shelves and the width of a bay. We then size a box that uses the full depth, leaves 20 mm above the lid for lifting and divides evenly into the bay width, which is how a stockroom ends up with no wasted inches. Add the heaviest load a box will carry, because paper files weigh far more than most people guess.

Choose two or three sizes at most. Interchangeable lids and matching footprints save more time over a year than any print detail. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, from £0.25 for a simple one-colour box, with the minimum set per job so an office can order fifty.

The free proof shows the base and lid flat with the label panel in place. After approval, production takes 4 to 7 working days and the flat bundles arrive free and tracked at UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days. Offices that archive files for years usually pick the stronger archive boxes with full-depth lids for the bottom row of a stack.

Cardboard Storage Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering cardboard storage boxes.

Single or double wall board for archive files?

Double wall if the boxes will be stacked high or packed tightly with paper, which is heavier than most people expect. Single wall suits lighter loads.

Will the hand holes on a storage box tear when it is full of files?

Not if they are reinforced. We add an extra layer of board around the cut on boxes made for paper loads, so the hole holds a full archive box without splitting. Plain hand holes are fine for lighter home storage.

Can you print a contents panel on the end?

Yes. A ruled panel for contents, date and owner on the end makes boxes easy to identify on a shelf.

Which lid style keeps out dust best?

A full-depth lid that covers the entire base gives the best protection from dust and light. A partial lid is cheaper and easier to lift if the boxes are opened daily.

Can storage boxes be sold as a retail product?

Yes. Many home brands sell printed storage boxes, using decorative patterns and a cleaner finish.

How do removal companies use branded boxes?

They print a logo and phone number on several faces, so the brand is seen in the van, the hallway and the loft long after the move. Some add a packing checklist on one side as a useful extra.

Do storage boxes arrive flat or ready made up?

They arrive flat-packed in bundles, so a hundred boxes sit on one pallet shelf until needed. The base and lid fold up without tape on most designs, which takes under a minute per box.

Can I add dividers inside?

Yes. Card dividers create sections for small parts, files or keepsakes.

How soon can storage boxes be delivered to an office?

Allow 4 to 7 working days for the boxes to be made once the free proof is signed off. Delivery to UK mainland offices is free and tracked and usually lands 2 to 3 working days later.

What happens if some boxes arrive crushed?

Send us a photo within 10 days of delivery and the affected boxes are reprinted or refunded, with no need to return the damaged ones first. The rest of the order stays with you.
